One of the all time legends of Texas football-I actually thought he was dead already-he was around a long time-what a tough old dude. One of three Texas sports legends to pass away recently-SB, Gene Upshaw and Dan Cook.

Honestly, I was more surprised that he was still alive than that he died. One of the first superstars of the NFL, he was an incredibly versatile player, leading the league in passing, interceptions and punting all in the same season on more than one occasion.

This is a sad mind-over-heart rating. . .but smart football fans must admit that Baugh wasn't much a celebrity and merits a low rating on this list. Baugh was a brilliant football player whose legend is lost on boy-wonder sportswriters under the age of 35. He was a great passer, punter, and a solid defender. Still holds the record for punting average. Once threw four touchdowns in a game and intercepted four (!) He was the last surviving member of the originial HOF class. They don't make 'em like Baugh, anymore. A true football legend has passed. . .but the celebrity rating is low. In no way is this meant as an offense to the man. Baugh just wanted to live on his ranch- I'd think he'd agree with me.

Sammy Baugh wasn't just one of the game's all time best quarterbacks, but an all time great player. He was selected to 6 Pro Bowls and 4 times was chosen as a 1st Team All Pro. His all-time passing numbers don't match up to today's records, but were the best of his time. He played 16 seasons for the Redskins, and 11 times he was in the top 5 in passing yardage. He led that category four times. He led the NFL in completion percentage nine times in his career. He was the premiere quarterback of his era. As a punter he led the league in average 5 times, has the best single season average of all time(51.4), and is still 3rd all time in career punting average. Defensively he had 31 career interceptions, including a league leading 11 in 1943 during a 10 game season. Can you imagine a player with 17 interceptions in a season in today's NFL? Baugh was one of the best players in the early years of the NFL, and was rewarded by being part of the inaugural induction class into the NFL Hall of Fame. He was America's greatest living football player, and while he did live a long life, he will still be missed.
