I just loved this book! It was completely different from other books and the premise was fantastic. If you have the option, watch the movie but realize that the book is 100x better. I recommend this to everyone!

I see ratings within ratings. Dune is a masterpiece of science fiction. I first read Dune when I was 11 years old, I have probably read Dune once or twice a year since. The level of complexity in the societies of Dune is amazing. I have found the prequels to be good also, even though they were written from outlines by Frank Herbert's son and a ghost writer. They give us insight into how the no thinking machines rules came to be and the intense hatred the Harkonnens and Atreides have for each other. Excellent books.

Excellent book with many levels of meaning woven in.A Persian Carpet for the intellect! Long,yes-but with a lot less wasted detail than most lengthy tomes.

I read the first book and stopped there. It was okay, but I like to think that our future has more to offer than a medevil political system with dukes and counts trying to liquidize each other with poor man's Machiavellian tactics.

Basically agree with ryper. First book is as good as Sc-Fi gets and it went steadily down from there. However, this is not a rating of the series but of the book Dune itself, which can only get the highest rating possible. For an even faster pace, but probably a little bit less of the religious aspects of Dune (which helped make it great) check out the prequels. The House Atreides, Harkonnen and Corrino are tremendous and the much earlier in time Butlerian Jihad, Machine Crusade and Battle of Corrin are just good.

The first book is worht 5 stars, the second and third 4 and the remainder of the sereis fewer. It's a shame that Frank herbert died before he could finish the series because I am sure that he could have impoved on Chapter house Dune which was basically boring.

I wish I could give it 20 stars. I've read the entire series 3 times in the past 10 years and I'm sure I'll read it again. It's a new story everytime because I grasp more of it everytime. The prequels written by Bryan Herbert, Frank's son, are excellent as well. He has captured his father's writting style and the history adds so much more to the original series. In my opinion, this series is an absolute must for any proclaimed Sci-Fi lover.

These days, every time I dump a glass of water down the sink because it's sat around too long, I think about how wealthy that glass would made a native of Dune.

Originally published in 1965, Dune is a must read for science fiction fans and a strong recommendation for all others. For the uninitiated, the book was inspired by Frank Herbert's involvement with a project to halt the proliferation of sand dunes in Oregon and examines the political intrigue of a futuristic world based on feudalism and how the competing houses fight for power and influence. The House Atreides (which is opposed by House Harkonnen and the Emperor) is given control over the desert planet Dune, the sole source for the spice Melange. With this backdrop, the reader is sucked into the politics, social forces, religion, mysticism, environmentalism, and complex intrigue of the characters as they weave schemes and counterplots. With the theme of a rare and controlled commodity, Dune reminds the reader of our contemporary world largely run by oil. While Dune is essential, the rest of the series is forced and can easily be skipped as other comments have noted. On a related note, one should not allow the original Dune movie to sour interest in this book as the film was a poor representation of the novel; however, the recent series produced and broadcast by the SciFi Channel is excellent. Dune won the first Nebula for Best Novel and shared the Hugo.

One of the best books I've ever read. I am completely addicted.

This Book deserves more stars than this page has to offer... this book has been compared to lord of the rings in its greatness, however i believe that it deserves far more accolades than this comparison and the "Hugo" and "Nebula" awards that it won. anyone who thinks otherwise either didnt get it (Read it again) or hasnt got it (get it). simply put, this book is a must.

Over-rated series. Far too long but at least it is original!

I've only read the first 3 books so far but they were excellent.

A very interesting and compelling book. A must read.

A complex, but well developed world in the midst of revolution. There's a little bit of everything here: religion, science, the environment, imperialism vs native cultures, politics, economics. Great read, even better re-read.

A masterpiece of storytelling, Frank Herbert's Dune is to sci-fi what J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is to fantasy. A brilliant read that's interesting, original and compelling. The lord of all sci-gi novels, and a must read.

I agree with dibler, if you liked the Foundation series you will love Dune. Its more fun and has lots more action. I never connected with the characters in Foundation like those of House Harkonnen and Atradies(sp?).
legiondary 02/01/2002
Simply a masterpiece and the successive novels aren't bad either. Complex, intricate universe that focuses on people and their various interactions instead of technology. I agree it's in the top 5 of all-time sci-fi.
Phonic 01/31/2002
Excellent charactors and storyline, surprisingly good even though it is from the 60s.

This book messes with your head...for a month after reading it, I couldn't pick anything else up.
weirdo 04/21/2001
It is a great book that makes you think along with the characters but i think it gets a little to complex with all of the things that go on. IF you are looking for an easy book to read for fun this is not it but if you want one that makes you think and have a great plot this is the one for you.
Dibler 04/18/2001
If you enjoyed the foundation series then you will love Dune. A sci-fi fantasy with political intrigue and exploration of the human psyche set against the backdrop of Dune, the hostile desert world. Loath the Harkonnon and scorn the Bene Gesserit as Maub Dibb unleashes his holy war on an unsuspecting universe.

Anything that can spawn so many incarnations has got to be pretty good

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
