Brown is wonderful, if not for everybody. The academics are great, the campus is nice, the location is good and unique. Anyone who criticizes Brown because of its liberal-leanings is being ignorant -- some of the USA's greatest conservative thinkers and politicians attended Brown. And those who call it the doormat of the Ivy League are desparate. It is the radical of the Ivy League, along with Columbia but in a different way. And yes people, the Brown degree is considered a top one - trust me, I have lived in 5 countries and everywhere I go people respect Brown. Even if it is a little too liberal at times...

I do not respect the U.S. News ranking criteria, but I have to agree with their decision to put Brown at the bottom of the Ivy League.  This school has nowhere near the backbone (either politically or financially) to stay at the top, and I am not a fan of the administration.  Also, did you hear about their special department to recruit celebrity students?  That--along with Duke's pandering to trust fund babies--is ludicrous and should not be tolerated.  It was also the only school that got caught up in that Eurotrash scandal of the late '80s.

If it's good enough for Mary Chapin Carpenter, it's good enough for me!

Brown is a bit quirky, but all and all its one of the nations best schools. Located in the historic district of Providence, its old halls and center green have an old world charm that is delightful. Great proximity to Providence downtown, near great art houses, coffee shops and places to eat.

I've met a few Brown alumni and they're good people, smart and all, but I get the impression Brown isnt much better than Duke, Stanford, Northwestern or Vandy.

Brown University is a joke. I totally regret coming here. We are a doormat ivy and our academic reputation in the real world is terrible. I think a lot of that has to do with our president. She really needs to go. Providence is a boring and dangerous town-- there are stabbings, muggings, and beatings which happen on campus on a regular basis. There was even a drive by shooting right next to New Dorm a few years back in 1997-98. Lastly, the students at Brown are unhappy, especially once they graduate and realize that a Brown degree does not mean much in academic circles or in business. Student unhappiness is further manifested by our endowment-- nobody gives back to Brown. Lastly, Brown lets in WAY too many unqualified Rhode Island residents; Brown is supposed to be a private school, not a state school, dammit.

Every Ivy league or junior Ivy school I've visited has it's share of weirdo's. But they are intelligent people and they don't bother anyone; I'd feel a lot safer on brown's campus than on the typical state university. Brown's a beautiful school and obviously the education is fantastic. Providence used to be considered a dump but about a decade ago the city went through a serious rebuilding process and is now on several lists as one of the top 10 cities to live.

Brown is one of the greatest undergraduate institutions in america, hands down. It's image as the progressive 'renegade ivy' as well as the diverse and intellectual student body gives Brown a unique niche in the academic world.

Brown is one of those schools that truly allows you to explore your own interests while providing the Ivy League education. Unlike many of its Ivy League counterparts, it gives you a lot of freedom in deciding what you want to do. Providence is really nice city as well, with a lot of opportunities for cultural and academic development. Students, from what I've gathered, are rather pretentious though--the preppy, upper class kids.

Pretentious undergraduates without the courage to stand up to their parents thus the piercing/hair color/leftism that will quickly die off once they go into the job market. Yes, some very bright and original people. . .but the lack of intellectual structure (ciriculum and otherwise) is cause for snickering in several academic circles. Don't get me wrong, these are smart and nice people. . .but there is something very immature about a student body that defines cool by arbitrarily rejecting EVERYTHING that isn't uber-tree-hugger-leftist. Then again, I'd rather be here than a more conservative place. Four Stars.

I attended Brown University from 1981-1983. If you don't mind living with tree-huggers and people with red or green hair, it's a great place to learn "The New Curriculum." I am sounding every bit of my 38 yrs.; actually it's a top notch school that tries very hard to not take it self seriously. It is a rather expensive place to find yourself...the campus is historic and the green is a beautiful place to hang. The school's living arrangements vary, and many live off-campus.

Brown has an absolutely beautiful campus, an intellectual yet very cool student body, and a great location. Easily one of the best schools in the country for undergrads.

It's an AMAZING university! If it weren't so good, why would 17,000 applicants waste their time on it? With one of the lowest acceptance rates, it has to be good.
