 | Randyman (109) 04/24/2005 | He autographed a picture for my son in 1992 at a card show in Long Beach, California, for some reason no one else was at his table, so we had a few minutes to talk, he was a really nice guy, a great ballplayer and a class act. As Alpepper said in his post BS (Before Steroids). Do they still make these kind of guys?

 | alpepper (22) 03/11/2005 | One of the great power hitters of the BS (Before Steroids) era. One of the best players of the '70s -- leading the Buccos to 6 post-seasons and 2 World Championships. Two Home run crowns and an MVP in 1979. He won the MVP solely on his stellar leadership of the Pirates to an improbable World title. I believe Stargell hit one of the longest homers in Philly Vet stadium history, travelling so far that it would have bonked one of them drunken Eagles fans that reside in the 700 level square on the noggin' (X-Rays show nothing). We'll miss you Pops.

 | John4283 (0) 03/11/2005 | Stargell left the building - literally - more than any Pirate in team history. Willie led the National League in homeruns in both 1971 (48) and 1973 (44). As team captain in 1979, he led the Pirates to the World Series title, earning NL,NLCS and World Series MVP awards.

 | CapAnson (1) 09/03/2004 | From 1965-75 the most dangerous hitter in baseball I'd say.

 | Rosco8484 (0) 07/25/2004 | Willie Stargell of the Pittsburgh Pirates (1962 - 1982) had an intimidating presence between the lines and charismatic patriarch in clubhouse and dogout. Crushed 475 homers, many of tape-measure variety and hit most by any player during the 1970's. Like his round-trippers, his 1,540 RBI's also most ever by a Pirate. Batted .282 over 21 seasons, all with Pittsburgh. Shared N.L. MVP honors in 1979, and named MVP in 79 N.L. championship series and World Series.

 | oodie (0) 04/16/2002 | pops was one of the greatest Pittsburgh Pirates to play the game and probably one of baseball's most warmhearted ambassadors. as a kid i watched willie from the steps in my parents old home as my father layed asleep on the couch after working all day and while my mother was off working until 11pm in order to care for me during the daylight. i'll forever cherish those moments of watching that big buddha of baseball crossing the plate revelling in the twighlight of his great career.
last year pops died when PNC opened...people wept at the statue that sits proudly and menacing in front of that beautiful ballpark.

 | Johnny Roulette (3) 01/11/2001 | Pops was the heart and soul of the Pirates 1979 championship team. Also won a ring in 1971. In '79 he was MVP of the regular season, the NLCS & the World Series. Hit 475 home runs. Won two home run titles(1971,'73) and an RBI crown(1973).
