Not as good as they used to be do to the usual sponsored crap.

Altavista is one of the original search engines and the results are very thorough, however, I can only give it a 3 because it is complicated, sometimes tiring and occassionally gives access to useless sites. It has some nice navigational tools, though.

One of he original and best. Great utilities.

I like their language translator feature.

write something down, press enter and it will give you thousands of duplicated links, unrelated links, homepages, links to diffrent sections of the same sites, links to single web pages, to sites with unofficial addreses etc etc. completely useless.

::OVERALL RATING: 3.55::Altavista.com is a pretty good search for those who want alot of results. I found the page to be very good at getting the results and it comes up with near as much as google and yahoo. but with most eninges it only goes to liek the 200-600th result then it can't display any more. that's the same with most of the portals out there, but google does go the furthest. altavista comes up with 20 or more pages and works like most searches. The advanced serach is pretty standard. It has the boolean prrase box and other display related options and of course the search button! I also liek the mail system of altavista. you can get a free acount there and send/recive e-mail. I have'nt accessed ti in a while. I don't remember the spcae limit but It was more than 2MB. It was good while I had it. The real thing that keeps me coming back is the babel fish translator. babel.altavista.com it can translate a whole page in 5 different laguages!!for example It comes in handy for looking up electronics . that arrive in japan first and the site doesn't have an english version to it. so you cna see the specs without waiting for the product to come out in the USA!!! altavista.com is pretty well laid out but the results can get tricky and they do have that "dead end"....could be a tad better.

Certeinly the best search engine available. Maybe not the most complete one (that would have to be google), but I like Altavista for its format and accuracy. I can't understand how people are still dumb enough to search with things like Hot Bot and Excite....

I like it because it's free for users. However, it tends to be slow in logging on and in their search. It does give a pretty big search selection.

This search engine is okay, but they could improve the engine by narrowing down on their outputs. I mean, it's good that this site is very informative, came up with many sites, but it's tiring for the researches.

Great browser, easy to understand what you are looking at. Also easy to find whatever you are looking for, it has a huge volume of resources available. The fact that just about every other search engine uses AltaVista's engine proves it is good.

From my experiences, AltaVista is a newsgroup and text-type search engine trying to be everything else. If you're looking for textual information, news stories, or news groups, use AltaVista. Anything else, like mainstream Web searches, try a different search engine...AltaVista just isn't vast enough.

When I first got online, I used Yahoo.com and all was well then. I soon discovered Altavista, then, all was great. Altavista gives me the results that I am looking for, and then some! Over the years, it has added features like an online translator (provided by systran), and specific searches for images and other multimedia. They also have a new program to earn points and shop with them. This is the best search engine around.

This search engine is very useful. There is lots of information and different sites to choose from. It has many different languages. Well organized, with a clear layout.

A few years ago, I thought AltaVista was the best search engine, but it has gone completely downhill since then. Now, it seems like users have overflowed it with super entries (and since I design websites myself, I know how easy it is to submit useless entrees into search engines) so if I search for one topic, it will return thousands of results, most of the time about half that are non-related, a quarter of duplicate entries, and only a small percentage that are useful. The only thing keeping it from a "1" rating is that if you want to search through the thousands of useless returns, it does give some good entries.

Altavista is the best search engine if you are looking for any site about a subject, as opposed to Yahoo, where you are more likely to find, say, official sites for exemple. The two are different approches to browsing the net.

Almost always finds what I need.

Once I managed to find data on aluminum extraction on the moon for my Material Science homework.

Altavista is an awesome search engine, itis easy to use for more complex Boulean searches.
