Probably the best pitcher of the modern era. Great on all levels--it's really hard to describe how great he is....maybe it's just too difficult. I do agree that he looks like an irs guy though. Viva El Mad Dog
irishgit 04/10/2007
Even at the peak of his career, when he was posting those microscopic ERA's I kept wondering how he did it. The guy looked like someone you'd hire to do your taxes, wandered out to the mound and seemed to be throwing no harder than I can. But he got out after out, and is undeniably one of the great pitchers of his generation, and was a key part of what is arguably the greatest pitching rotation of all time.
doobiesNhof 05/30/2006
One of the greatest pitchers in MLB history. 4 Cy Young awards prove that!!
alpepper 06/22/2005
I commend him for his pinpoint control, great command, and perhaps being the last-ever pitcher to win 300 games. All that being said, if I was a GM and I could have any pitcher to pitch in Game 7 of the World Series, I could probably name 20-25 pitchers in the past decade I would take over Maddux.
mex 06/22/2005
he's the man
dpostoskie 02/16/2005
Obviously past his prime (over 4.00 ERA 04). A couple years ago 'GREAT', overall one of the best to play the game even without the power. Over 300 wins and gave up BB once every 5 innings. He played his position perfect.
numbah16tdhaha 09/08/2004
Not the greatest, but superb control. The man could hit a dime.
TheStraightSho oter 09/08/2004
The greatest pitcher I've ever seen.
OneHungryMonst er 08/23/2004
Hall of Famer--no question about it.
glowingmutan 08/18/2004
one of the best pitcjers of all time and one of the most consistant.
fezzador 08/13/2004
One of the most consistent pitchers of the past 15 years. Until a couple of years ago, he was a lock for 15 wins and a sub 3.00 ERA. He's a bit older now, but the Professor is still as wily as they come. He doesn't rely on the strikeout as heavily as say, Pedro, the Big Unit, or the Rocket, but he gets guys out any way he can. With 300 victories in the books, he has his ticket waiting for him in Cooperstown. Seems to be a fairly humble and down-to-earth person, something sorely lacking in professional sports today.
louiethe20th 08/02/2004
Maddux is still very good when he has his location going, but he is very vunerable now and gives up too many homers!
yisman 05/07/2004
Still good, but clearly on the downside.
sperryc 05/05/2004
Who doesn't root for this guy? Unlike the flashier pitchers who throw the heat and seem focused on racking up Ks (Kerry Wood comes to mind), Maddux will do whatever he can to get batters out (groundouts are his bread & butter). He never had an over-powering arm but his age is forcing him to rely more than ever on placement, and I think he's good for 12-14 more wins this year (2004).

I was sincerely po'd when he left Chicago. But that has been over a decade ago so I am over it. He is obviously one of the best pitchers ever.
ClassicTVFan47 12/10/2003
An incredibly talented pitcher that has pitched for my two favorite MLB teams, the Cubs and the Braves.
StanUzbeck 09/01/2003
Back when Atlanta had the best rotation in baseball history, Maddux was THE stud of the lineup. He may not have had the most impressive fastball in the league, but no one had more class. He got people out; not necessarily through K's but through chucking balls that were impossible to line drive. I hope that this particular SOB attains the Hall of Fame, or I will lose all faith in baseball altogether.
iluvamerica 08/06/2003
I watched this guy pitch in Seattle, and even though he lost to My Mariners, he is still one of the greatest pitchers of all time.
slo_sk8t3r 07/18/2003
Maddux up next in line to get 300 wins, of course he's great!!
Hardwire 07/14/2003
Not the greatest, has had a good ERA in the past. Uses changeup effectively and mixes it with good moving fastball. Career ERA 2.89 phenominal in this day and age, but has always had good fielding behind him to support his groundball style. Excellent defensive player and good hitter for a pitcher.
getback 05/09/2003
a Great pitcher ,one of the best of the past twenty years.
the transgressors 04/05/2003
the decline in certainly in progress. He gets more stars for his career than he should get as a current star.
BassHawg 03/03/2003
past his prime
jgswors 02/26/2003
cubs should have never let him go
BIGGESTBRAVESF AN 01/25/2003
simply the best. THE SMARTEST PITCHER TO EVER PLAY THE GAME.
uhuru 11/12/2002
Maddux is seriously over-rated. Look at his performance during the second half of the past 3 years. He is very ineffective after July 31 ! He is one of the great pitchers of all time but alas, he's too long in the tooth to be considered a superstar anymore !!
laotzu 11/12/2002
Yeeeeaaaah!
Jason1972 11/05/2002
One of the most prolific throwing arms I've seen since I don't know when. I'm sure, somewhere out there, there are some Cubs fans who are still regretting that Chi-town got rid of him as they did in the early 90s, before he could prove himself. I can't stand the Braves but I respect this guy (future Hall-Of-Famer).
Davis21Wylie 07/07/2002
He's the same as he's always been, and hitters can't adapt to him, even after all these years. His stuff is not overpowering at all, but he puts it where he wants it and how he wants it. His control is pinpoint, especially with the change. He's only 87-89 mph on his fastball, but he'll cut it, sink it, two-seam it, four-seam it. Everybody knows the fastball isn't for anything but setting up the change anyway. He uses a breaking pitch occasionally, but mostly he keeps hitters off-balance better than anyone in baseball. The change-up is scary, and he's very unpredictable with it; he'll throw it in any count. He takes a little off, puts a little on, and it does it's job: the hitters never are comfortable. It's scary how many ground ball outs he induces. He won't strike you out, but he'll get you out.

i think that greg is a great baseball player and i think he teaches a lot of players many things.
koolsax 03/09/2001
One of if not The best pitcher and player of all time...Great control...Great accuracy...And a great family person.
braves_chick 11/10/2000
Besides Glavine, Maddux is one of Atlantas best pitchers.
parf10148et 08/24/2000
Great pitcher, but would you really rather have him than Pedro, not me.
flai6201om 07/03/2000
too bad his talents are overshadowed by thet bum ROCKKKER.
saz@749om 06/30/2000
While still one of the best in baseball (he helped carry my rotisserie team to a huge first half lead), he is definitely not the best player in baseball as these ratings indicate. He has lost some of the dominance that should place him near the top on the alltime baseball list.
Ruby 03/04/2000
How did my Cubbies ever let Maddux slip through their fingers?? He had a full decade of near perfection. In the history of the game, I doubt there's anyone you'd rather have in your starting staff, save perhaps Sandy Koufax or Satchel Paige in their prime...
gte23588du 01/08/2000
He's such a dependable player. He's great.
mjes417om 11/01/1999
The best control pitcher in the game. A right handed Sandy Kofax
GTE2266DU 10/26/1999
Best all around pitcher in the league. Excellent control + consistency.
