But he could hit like he invented the game.

 | WillinNewHaven (0) 10/28/2005 | Very close to a five. Bad reputation in the field and the fact that he did not seem to inspire any managers to keep him. Also teams he left seemed to improve and teams he joined did not, although there is some evidence otherwise.

 | John4283 (0) 03/10/2005 | Hornsby is often called the greatest right-handed hitter of all time. He won seven National League batting titles and had a .358 lifetime batting average. Only Ty Cobb, with a .367, had a higher average. Hornsby batted .424 in 1924, a single-season record

 | callitdowntheline75 (59) 09/05/2004 | Rogers Hornsby was a cantankerous player who often quarreled with other players. But his talent as a hitter and a complete player cannot be denied. A prodigious hitter who was so committed to hitting, Hornsby is said to have refused to watch movies for fear of destroying his remarkable eyesight. But .424 is most likely never again to be matched (or broken) in a single season as Rahjahs reigned havoc on the National League in 1922. Simply, Hornsby was one of the greatest ever.

 | Rosco8484 (0) 07/25/2004 | Perhaps the game's most consistent right-handed hitter, Roger Hornsby captured seven batting titles-including six in a row - averaging better than .400 threee times. A complete player whose passion for the game was shown both on and of the field, Hornsby's .424 mark in 1924 is a National League record for the 20th century and his career average of .359 is the highest ever in the National League. The Rajah, a two-time MVP and Triple Crown winner, was the player-manager of the Cardinals' first World Series team in 1926. Roger Hornsby was inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1942.
