To the commenter below: Agreed, my HP Pavilion laptop does all the same things. It seems to be a well known design defect in dv6000 and dv9000 series notebooks. I'm very disappointed that HP hasn't stepped up to the plate to help thousands of people who will now be lost to them as customers. Check out the link below; the speakers, microphone, and on-off switch might be repairable by something as simple as swapping a couple of cables. HP could have salvaged a lot of goodwill on this by offering some inexpensive (to them, not to us) parts and instructions, rather than trying to pretend the design defect away. The defective cable runs all those, and apparently it can be swapped with the one that runs those ridiculous Quickplay buttons. Getting inside your computer to do this is of course a pain and I'm avoiding it for now; I use external microphone and speakers, and turn my HP Pavilion DV6000 series on and off by jamming one end of a spoon as hard as I can against the on-off switch. At some point this will stop working. Kind of makes you want to run out and buy an HP, eh? :)To the commenter below: Agreed, my HP Pavilion laptop does all the same things. Peice of crap! Died on me 3 times (because of the cheap china-made motherboard), internal speakers stopped working, microphone malfunctioned, power button doesn't work, battery life barely even 45 mins, brightview screen has gotten extremely dim, and those damn quickplay buttons!!!!!!

When I compared the screen processer memory it looked like a deal next to others in that price range. Do yourself a favor and walk away. Buy a Apple they just work beter and well built. The negitave ratings on the HP are real people that got burned .

I have a dv1000, I think this is the lowend of this series, but for the money I spent on it (1400 dollars) I thought I would be getting a better deal, a built in graphics cards make sure you will never be able to play some good games. My computers crashed and died after 4 months of use, I don't know what it was a virus or hardware malfunction but the warrenty covered it for me, unfourtanetly they scammed me, they send me back a refurbished laptop, that isn't the same thing. It's a 15" screen instead of the 17" I used to have. Not only that but the keyboard on this thing is CRAP!!!!The keys are atrociously weak, typing on this thing kills it. I'm sorry but this is not the laptop to have, it loos cool and that's about it. Save your money and get something else. I give a fair warning.

Its a computer, thats about all. Bought a new dv9000 about a month ago and the keys are falling off already. Made in China, love the people, hate their electronics. Would NEVER purchase another HP product again! Buyer beware!!!!

Hi ... my name is Zokey Evago, and we may have something in common ! .. Did you purchase an HP laptop or computer in 2006-2007 and called HP warranty support? .. Did you find the "Total Care" staff in India to be very polite, time-consuming, and utterly useless? .. Did the staff in India instruct you to re-install all the software? .. Did you make more than 4 calls to HP for troubleshooting? .. were you told a case manager will call, but no one did? .. were you told to call 877-917-4380 ext. 94 or 79 or 87 to speak with a case manager but got re-routed back to India or to a dead-end voice-mail? .. was a promise-date to get a replacement part or product missed by more than 5 days? .. Did you answer yes to most of the questions above? .. if yes, please answer two more... 1). Do you have a record of your case number? 2). Did you spend more than 10 hours total (including calls-on-hold, reboots, re-installs, system recovery, re-program preferences, etc..) in the process of troubleshooting? IF you answered yes to both (!) the above questions, you are not alone ! .. The words Total Care, Warranty, Customer Service, Technical Support are meaningful and important to us. These powerful words create a image of integrity, create customer-expectations, influence purchase decisions, and carry a real responsibility. .. Do you feel that HP is genuine about the use of these words? Please help us get the attention of HP's senior management in a constructive way. Become part of the solution. An open letter to the board of directors? A full-page ad? Another class-action suite by attorneys from Girard Gibbs & De Bartolomeo LLP? or by Green & Jigarjian? or by Cutter, Ratinoff & York? When I purchased my notebook brand new in July 2005 it was shipped to me already broken. After HP "fixed it" and sent it back, it broke again. Something with the motherboard . . . Now the problem is back, but this time they are refusing to help fix the computer as the warranty is expired. So all in all, I my notebook was broken from the beginning and is still broken, with no help from HP to fix it without paying a huge fee. Do not buy a computer from HP! I learned this the hard (and expensive) way.

The ZE5400 really turned out to be an expensive piece of crap! It has a real problem with overheating - even when all of the noisy fans are running full blast all of the time. The first time my system simply melted down destroying the hard drive and motherboard. Was I "Safe" because I had purchased extended warranty? Heck No! HP fought me tooth and nail (one tech even told me it was a software problem!!!) every step of the way. Eventually it took 3 weeks and untold aggravation to get my system repaired. They replaced almost everything inside, but did that fix the problem? No! Less than 15 months later, my system is overheating again. No more HP laptops for me!

I have a HP Pavilion ZE5416ea and is perfect to play music on, but the battery is worn a bit, though just got another battery off ebay and it's seems to have done the trick. it's great for music and video and does look nice, although playing games like need for speed on is too slow. someone else who wrote about this laptop is that it runs hot, though i've had mine for a while and seems fine to me? doesn't burn my lap or anything.

When I got my laptop everything was great. I loved being able to play my computer game and use the internet etc...all the stuff that comes with computers. Well its been a few months and I have noticed a problem...my disk drive skips my music and my DVDs are choppy. I called customer service and was on the phone with a woman I couldn't understand (not big on outsourcing either) for an hour before she recommended I clean my drive. So I said "okay hold on" and I cleaned it...right there with her on the phone. It didn't work. So her solution? "you need a better cleaner" are you kidding me? I am very dissatisfied with their customer service and I'm surprised my disk drive wore out so fast considering I hardly use it. If I'm under warantee don't they have to fix it? Anyone who knows about this please message me.

Purchased an HP ZD8225ca...this is a great laptop...only complaint that I would have is that battery life is a little short, but for this sort of performance and a huge 17 inch widescreen I can live with that...if your looking for a laptop that will replace your desktop this is the one for you...

I will never buy another HP in my life, if one person reads this and then decides not to buy this crap computer than I did my job!! The screen cracked less than a year after I bought it, and then HP would not replace it even if I have a warrenty. DON'T EVER BUY AN HP, they are crap, and the company knows it!! Plus, the y will never replace it even if it isnt your fault what happened.

I HATE my HP Pavillion dv1400 Notebook Computer! It runs way too hot, even on a cooling blanket. It is less than 3 months old, but they won't exchange it for a new one. The keys will one by one stop working and freeze up so I can't depress them, some make a crunchy sound on the right side of the keyboard and then the screen goes black. I sent it in for service--after a whole month and several calls I finally got it back, but it continues to do the same thing. I lost several software programs that I am unable to reload and use again. I have called to ask for an exchange, but they insist it passes their "tests". They will not back this product up. I am stuck and fed up.

I HATE!!! my HP Pavillion ze5400! It runs so hot that it is impossible to have on my lap. The heat even goes through 2 or 3 books and a cool mat that I set it on. I've sent it back to HP 2x and they send it back to me after having done no repairs, saying it's fine. The fan has such a high pitched whir that you can hear it from another room. When I speak to tech support I let them listen to it over the phone and they all say the same thing, Oh my God! That's not right! Then I send it in for service and again get it back with no changes. I feel 100% ripped off by this computer. I hate using it!

Bought a customized zt3000 (basically a rebadged Compaq x1000), in January of 2004. After shopping around, I determined it to be the best deal, by far, for the features I wanted (especially the 1920x1200 display). It felt a bit cheap and flimsy. But, after it recently survived a fall from a table onto a hard floor - while running - I concluded that a notebook doesn't need to feel rigid to be tough. The only problem I had with it was that the ethernet interface would sometimes go down until the system was rebooted. I think this was fixed by a fairly recent driver update, but since I've become so accustomed to wireless networking, I haven't bothered to check.

I bought a customized HP ZX5000 Pavilion Notebook about six months ago. It is the greatest computer I ever had. I bought it for college, to do school work, but it is also perfect for gaming(games like Halflife 2 and Farcry are beautiful on its big screen!). I bring it everywhere and it has taken a beating, but it still looks and works like new. It is a very solid and dependable laptop. ********Stats******** 3.2 Ghz P4(512MB L2 Cashe 800Mhz FSB) 512 MB RAM 60 GB 5400 RPM HD 128MB Dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 15.4 1680x1050 SXGA+ Widescreen LCD 802.11b/g with bluetooth CD-RW/DVD ROM OS: Widows XP Pro/Mandrake Linux 10.1

Notebooks are hard for me to build from scratch, so I'm almost stuck with pre-built ones, and HP isn't that bad. I'd take a Vaio any day over an HP, though. :)

I like computers. I've purchased 7 (I love to 'upgrade' a lot!) from Hewlett-Packard in the past 2 years: 4 Laptop (Notebook) Computers and 3 Desktops. I've always believed that HP made a good solid product and they stand behind their products - until yesterday... I bought a HP Pavilion zv5030us Laptop this past May (2004). It worked OK - until last month (November) it suddenly would not power up. I run the latest version of McAfee AntiVirus with updates and am very careful of online Bots, Viruses, Spyware, Malware, etc. So. I call HP and of course, since it's after 'normal' US hours, I chat amicably with some dude from India (that's an OUTSOURCED job, by the way) about my problem with the laptop. After about 20 minutes, they realize that this laptop definitely needs to be brought in for repair - they send me the next day a FEDEX Shipping Label - prepaid, since my Laptop is under the 1-year Factory Warranty. I box the laptop up in the factory box it came in when I purchased it. FEDEX comes by the following day, picks up the laptop, gives me a Tracking Number - so far so good. HP Repair Center in Milpitas CA gets it the next day. I continue tracking it. HP sends it out the same day - wow! Fast repair service. I get my laptop back, power it up - great! I don't bother worrying that they send my laptop back to me in a crappy looking box that is not the same one I sent it to them in, or that they did NOT put a 'Repair Sheet' in the box with my laptop. I don't pay attention to the occasional whine of my hard drive it makes when I click 'Save' on a file, or the odd smell I occasionally catch a whiff of... My laptop is fixed and I'm happy! Then I decide.. oh, about a month later to put all my old music and video files back onto my hard drive... For some strange reason, I can NO LONGER put the very same files back onto my laptop. Hmmmmmmmmmm. I do a 'Properties' check on C Drive and find the problem - my Hard Drive has SHRUNK by 20GB! I do not have a factory recovery partition. How can a Hard Drive SHRINK from 60GB to 40GB overnight? Only HP can tell you that answer and their response is: This product only comes with a 40GB Hard Drive. That is what website says about these product specifications. So I tell him AGAIN that I speficically purchased this laptop BECAUSE it had a 60GB hard drive to begin with and I couldn't show him on the box because THEY kept my damn box! So 'all he can do' is send it up to the next higher level. That was a week ago. No emails. No phone calls. No response. No giving a damn about letting me know what's going on. This is the second time I've called them about this in 2 weeks. Same answers. I reminded the tech that I have purchased 7 of their computers in the past 2 years and however they responded to my request for them to replace my hard drive with the CORRECT size one will directly affect who I will purchase my next computer from. The tech said he had made a note of it. I guess their response is to just FART AROUND and hope I don't call them a third time. That's fine. I won't call them a third time. I've listed this laptop for sale and I will be HANGED if I EVER purchase a single thing from them again - even if it's a stick of memory. NEVER AGAIN - HP has lost a loyal customer. Period. And THAT, my e-Friends, is my TWO CENTS on Hewlett-Packard. BUYER BEWARE! Thank you for reading this..

Have had pavilion 4420 for 11 months.(My first notebook) Multiple crash events handled over the phone and then last month the screen went black. I NEVER had a problem with any of my desktops over the years...maybe because they weren't HPs.

i've had my pavilion for about two years during which time the computer has frozen on several occasions, the mouse has done the same, and the base has numerous cracks in it (it should be mentioned that i am very careful with the unit so i was and still am quite disturbed by this). in addition my screen has gone out and i am not certain if it can be fixed or replaced. if it cannot i know that i will NOT buy another hp laptop.

Excellent choice in Notebook Computers. Hp make a nice meaty, sturdy, affordable notebook with good looks to go with it. For the money you just can't go wrong here... Wal-Mart has an HP Pavilion notebook with printer for $999.......

I recently purchased one of these beauties that came with a 60GB hard drive, over five hundred megs of memory, DVD CD-RW drive, floppy drive, and tons of other wonderful options. I absolutely love the new addition to my computer family which already included one HP that I adore.

I have purchased two HP Pavilion ZE 4365 notebook computers. In my opinion, this notebook is close to being perfect. It has serial, parallel, 2 USB, firewire, S video, and keyboard/mouse ports. Legacy ports (serial and parallel) are disappearing from computers. It is rare to see this combination of ports on any notebook computer these days. I need these ports to interface the notebook to equipment I own and the circuitry my son builds in college. My son and I have not had any problems with these notebooks. The built-in wireless LAN card tops it off. You can also get a free(after $50 rebate)floppy drive direct from HP. All of this for $1000 (after $100 HP and $150 store rebates). I would strongly recommend this notebook to anyone needing these features.

HP customer service stinks, Been dealing with a locked bios, "Fresh" out of the box. HP denys responsibility. Been dealing with them for 5 months and still has not been resolved. They could care less about customer satisfaction, they are relying on us Stupid Americans that will still purchase from a company that provides sub-standard products. As for this American I will not buy another HP product.

Had to return two HP Pavilion ze4325s. Both had network connectivity problems. Customer service is friendly but the products are defective...

No problems or issues.

What I like about this notebook is that it's small and quite comfortable. Monitor is big enough and hard drive is quite roomy. However I have experienced problems with keyboard (sometimes numeric and functional keys stop responding) and hard drive (sometimes it chokes and everything stops until it's done housekeeping). Quite average performance in comparison with Sony Vaio and cannot be upgraded to Windows XP :(

It is the best computer because I have used it. This great computer works fine and they are to be number one in their day.

I picked "five" becasue I would rely on HP bacuse they are good quality computers.
davidotm 11/08/2000
The Pavilion notebook is great, for upgradeability (ie RAM), the docking peripheral allows multiple USB ports and that is good too for my use.

These are okay. Good specs and performs well. The color schemes are nice. It doesn't weigh that much either. I'm not a big fan of HP, but this is okay.
jedi 10/31/2000
It sucks. It's slow and it's ugly.
alopez 10/16/2000
It works fast most of the time. Unfortunately sometimes it's necessary to run a few programs at a time and the speed decreases dramatically.
bija8432om 07/11/2000
A good computer for the home user, but as the computer is very much designed for Windows only, it's difficult to get another OS loaded onto it, and finding device drivers are difficult, especially for professionals.

I bought a HP Pavillion at Best Buy for $1800, PIII 450 and it is super fast. I find it very easy to upgrade in Ram and hardware.
PANA7871om 06/26/2000
I like the exterior design of these notebooks. Also, they provide good customer service attention.
Wiggum 06/01/2000
So far, so good! I bought an HP Pavilion N3270 about two months ago, and I've been really pleased with it. The touchpad is far better than the ones on the Compaq laptops. The screen is large, with good resolution. Most importantly, the Pavilion hardly ever freezes up on me, even when I have all kinds of windows open. The last Compaq I used locked up at least once a day. I only called the HP help desk once - when I was having trouble attaching both a mouse and an external keyboard - and they were very responsive. All things considered, I would definitely recommend this laptop to others.
bing6733om 05/17/2000
Just recently released, the HP pavilion series notebook is competing in the value market. They have notebooks ranging from the $1200 price range to $1500. This is about what you have to pay for an average notebook. The screen is clear and the touchpad mouse is responsive. The machine is quick, but as are most value notebooks, the battery life suffers. Make sure you have an outlet nearby.
artbuf 04/27/2000
A solid machine with many of the essentials included. The DVD drive is fast and provides smooth, TV quality playback on the 14.1 TFT Active Matrix screen. The screen is bright and responsive, and crisp at 1024x768. RAM upgrades are a breeze! (I suggest OUTPOST.COM...best prices) Add a Netgear PCMCIA Ethernet card, and you are ready to roll. Downside: when running on AC, the unit gets a little warmer than I like, especially if I am holding it in my lap!
