I really am not much of a rodent person, but if I was going to own anything of that nature I think it would either be a gerbil or a hamster.

Extremely smart creatures! Please buy a cage that securely closes as they are prone to escaping.Good clean pets, but often do not enjoy being handled. Nor do they "play" but do like running around in a space provided with no escape holes and always under supervision. Have a bit more tollerence for small children then hamsters do but not so much as to suggest they are a good pet for them. Do best in warmer rooms and with older children with gentle hands. QUICK LITTLE GUYS. especially when they don't want to be held. ;)males do best alone, females can be in pairs

If your landlord won't allow you to keep a badger, or a beaver or a wolverine, then I guess a gerbil will do.

Didn't Richard Gere own a gerbil once?
