The industry standard has some terrific features. . .I've dealt with versions in work and as a student since the mid-90's. . .I like the ease of adding tables in the new Word- big plus. But as others have complained- I have had small hiccups that I simply cannot expect from MicroSoft's gold-standard word processing software. Word is sooo close. . .can't they stop the bugs?

Microsoft Word 2003 became an industry standard as Microsoft Windows. No matter what you say about it, most of you will be still using it. Therefore, learning the program in depth will minimize the complication for its use. There is a space for improvement, and it might be reached in Microsoft Word 2007, which I have, but did not try yet. Program capabilities can be improved by additional plugins. I am using the third-party grammar check program, that is much better than built-in adviser.

As Word seems to be the standard and a rather capable word processing program, it deserves no less than four stars on that basis alone. Word has all the bells and whistles that one would expect and need from a modern word processing program (of course), and it is relatively intuitive to the typical computer user. Moreover, as employers almost invariably ask for resumes in Word format, it (or a competitor that will save in Word format) is a necessity for this purpose. On the downside (as another comment noted), the "paperclip guy" help tool is usually more annoying than helpful. Nevertheless, since my first modern word processing program was WordPerfect and I like the feel of WordPerfect better, Word only gets four stars to WordPerfect's five.

This program must be burned at the stake! i am boycotting this program whos with me?!?!
skyishone 10/04/2004
I haven't had much of a problem with it, except that the Paperclip guy is really annoying. Even if you hide him he'll still try to tell you that you're doing it wrong by popping up a light bulb on the standard toolbar. Microsoft needs to make their software less annoying and more user-friendly. The other issue I have is when it tells you that you have a grammar mistake and it tells you the rule, and the rule is exactly the same thing as the mistake. Their grammar help is confusing at best.

So what it it's the biggest word processor by market share. It still sucks as far as it's security is concerned.

My experience with computers pre-dates even Microsoft. In the days before most of you were born we operated at 16Mhz. When the speed lapsed to 25 then 33 MHz we led the engineering world. Word is not and has never been the best word processor. It's Microsoft's marketing that has forced Word into our computer's. Wordperfect is far better and more powerful then Word. I use both and Quattro Pro is much better then Excel. But, kudo's to Microsoft for their business savy.

The program is a pig. There is nothing more annoying than hitting the backspace key and having the document formatting on your page get ruined. Worse yet, you have no clue why it happened. You try to redo it, and itr happens all over again. I switched to WordPerfect as my word processor a few years ago. It will read and write MS Word documents, but it creates, manages and edits them much better then Word. Do yourself a favor. Get WordPerfect and simply save your documents in MS Word format. You'll keep your sanity if you do.

A good office suite for the home and the office. If you are running windows. I do suggest, if you got a lower end PC, to stick with your old versions. . It has a great number of options and some of the tings I seen at the Microsoft TouchPoint series and TS2 conferences blew me away! everything intergrates and forms one really cool and really great business solution!

I always find myself using this program. Whether it be an essay or project for school or just working on my own personal writing, I find Word to be relatively simple and easy to use.

I absolutely love Word. Word is simple for me to use and is instinctual for the new user. That paper clip guy? I got rid of him; I'm not sure how I did it but he doesn't show up on my screen at all.
kamylienne 04/02/2003
A great tool, (though I could really do without the auto-formatting and the bossy little paperclip guy in the corner of my screen--it's a good thing I can turn the helper off, it's when I go to other computers to work on, and POOF, he's there again!) This program is very versatile, and if you take the time, you can create almost any type of document using this program. And, I agree with CastleBee--Mary Shelley wrote "Frankenstein" around 1816, died in 1851. I'd imagine she would use Word if she had it, though.

Another "must" for the office. I have used this feature to write letters of accretidation and also used for presentations for possible clients. You can use this w/ Powerpoint and make one heck of a presentation.

Has always been the word processing program of choice for my needs. Easy to learn and easy to use. Love the popup thesarus on the newer version I'm using at work ... just right click a word and you get a handy little list of alternates. And here's some good news for "Princess Bride" - you can actually de-select the office helper feature and also make Word stop correcting and changing everything automatically. And to "Callmetootie" - yes, I suppose it would be conceivable to think of Mary Shelley using Word. However, the early 19th century version was more than likely a quill pen and parchment.
callmetootie 04/10/2001
Microsoft Word is really the best thing to use if you need to write a resume or just want to jot down a good story. A lot of famous writers use Microsoft Word to write their books: Steven King, R.L. Stine, Mary Shelley [I'm not positive], and Bruce Coville.

I gotta say that despite all the problems I have with some of Microsofts programs, Word I think, is one of the best they have. I really can't think of anything that I don't like about Word, it's easy to use, very well laid out, and can perform so many different functions. Easy to import and export documents, add images, create form fields, everything. I've used lotus, Amipro and Works in the past and I think hands down Word is the best of the lot. But hey that may just be me.
SamIAm 10/11/2000
I use Microsoft Word quite a bit and find it simple and intuitive. I like that some misspelled words are automatically corrected as well as grammatical errors. Overall a decent product with helpful features.
Princess Bride 04/05/2000
Make the bad paperclip go away! And stop formatting and correcting every word I type! Maybe I LIKE not capitalizing the first word of every line. What do you think about that, eh? And who cares if my sentence is passive? I don't! This program uses more RAM than a database server, and that's a lot! Microsoft Word needs to die.

About as integrated as a Klan meeting..... You need a Cray to make it perform, and then it lacks an intuitive interface.
peac1925om 11/27/1999
have to agree about the menus... love the HTML features too... easy beans..
kevi1410om 11/21/1999
WORD 2000 IS THE BEST ONE YET! THE BEST FEATURE IS THE SHORTENED MENUS (MENUS THAT ONLY SHOW ITEMS THAT YOU HAVE USED).
prai989et 11/11/1999
It's gotten too big for its britches. But it's still a good product.
Ruby 11/07/1999
Easy to use but pretty clunky
