clearly most people don't know what they are talking about here. if you have ever worked in a public library (AS IN FREE TO THE PUBLIC) you have some knowledge about the fact that library's are rarily quiet and librarians might as well be body-guards at times! You know how many disgruntled crazy homeless people have to be chucked out of a library in a day. Spend a little more time there before you decide that it's boring. And most people are librarians do it cause they love literature. not shushing people. Are we really stuck on that kind of stupid image people?

Being a librarian as always struck me as being a boring and monotinous profession. Not appealing at all.

Libraians have the reputation for being old, wrinkly old ladies with a book always in thier hands. I still havent met a librarian that is like that. Still, whenever I go to a library, I always find things myself using computers. Some librarians dont know where to find things, which is why I just use a computer.

Being a librarian should be for old ladies. It's so lame and boring.

No, no, no! Sure, librarians are needed. I even appreciate and respect them. I appreciate them because most are very good at finding pertinent information using various resources. I respect them because I cannot even begin to comprehend why they would place themselves in the careers they have. As an extreme last resort, I took library science my senior year of highschool. As a result of that class, I have read more of you all's comments than I ever really wanted. Now, I'm stuck sitting through lectures where a librarian takes us through database after database after database after database...Sorry. To the point--I find it of no interest whatsoever to find information, and to categorize it, and to help people find information when I really could care less if they ever do...it just does not appeal to me in the very least. So, to rate this occupation, I ask myself if I would like to have it. The answer is no, no, no!

Sounds pretty boring for one to make a career out of this. But hey, that's just my opinion...

This job sounds super-unglamorous to me, but I recnetly was talking to a software company exec who said he was always looking for job candidates with degrees in library science, saying their training is perfectly suited for mapping out advanced database work. So my instincts appear to have been wrong about the virtues of getting this kind of training.

Yes, computers have greatly changed the look and function of libraries. HOWEVER, the need for multi-media trained and computer savy librarians is actually growing not dwindling - especially in K-12 schools. In the past several years, library science has become a much more interesting and dynamic profession as a direct result of technology. If you enjoy information, research, computers, decent pay and a relatively low stress environment, look into Information and Library Science.

With computers and the Dewey Decimal System, the need for Librarians is dwindling. It would be so quiet all the time. You couldn't laugh all day. I like books and reading a lot but being a librarian just doesn't sound like any fun whatsoever.
