I dated a clarinet player once. They aren't obvious like the flutes, but they are still freaks if ya know what I mean...

Clarinets are beautiful instruments. The only reason people think they are honking squeaky instruments is probably because they only really listened to one is at their sister's elementary school band or something. Listen to any of Mozart's clarinet pieces done by any professional and you will hear how absolutely beautiful this instrument is.

The reason you americans think the clarinet is bad, is because you use american reeds (they make a stupid brassy sound) if you used french cut (good reeds) then u might get a better sound out of it.

Waaaa Waaaaa Waaaaa! Are all of you kids done whining about how you hated elementary clarinet playing! For heaven's sake, all instruments sound like crap until they're learned properly. The clarinet is a beautiful and versitile instrument with a very unique sound. It has a beautiful mellow tone which can instantly be changed to bright and jazzy, or dark and deep. It also has an amazing range, three octave C scales and down to a low E past the lowest C. I absolutely love the clarinet (yes I am partial), however it is highly underappreciate (as someone here earlier said). An instrument well known for it's mellow smooth sound, highly technical capabilities and versitile style's, the clarinet is one of the most fun instruments out there. Also, the dynamic range on a clarinet is amazing and as far as not getting the melody in a concert band- WRONG! Clarinets often have the melody in concert bands. So I guess don't expect to sound good on this technical instrument with 1,4, or even 7 years of practice. I'm in my 8th year of study on this instrument (and am planning on playing as a career) and there is still room for improvement. Ok, well I've ranted enough. Clarinets are awesome.!!!

all right, i'm kinda partial. i played it for about 7 years. i guess that it's not the best sounding instrument, but i think that it's highly underappreciated. and if you've ever heard a professional play it, it's absolutely incredible. the only real problem that i had with it was that for the first 3 or 4 years i played it, i would swear that i sounded like a dying goose. flute came much more naturally to me.

I have never gotten into these things. They seem to just be little squeaking, honking, silly-sounding tubes. When it is played smoothly and well it can be very nice, but I've never appreciated clarinets as much as others.

I played the Clarinet for 4 years while in school, and I can say that it's an easy instrument to learn and pick up. I enjoyed playing it, but I didn't like the sound of it all that well, compared to other instruments. I also didn't like how I rarely got to play the melody in concert band. I also felt like I was being overpowered by the brass instruments. However, I was an amateur, and I have heard professionals play the clarinet, and it definitely sounds a lot better than when I played it! It's a very distinct sound too, and easily recognizable.

At my elemtary school, we were required to play a musical instrument for at least one year. I picked the clarinet. I hated every minute of it.
