12/12/2006 | I play a number of different type of drums and I've gotta say it's one of the most cathartic things to do. When you're a bit p*ssed off , let yourself go on a kit and then you'll feel a million times better than you did before. The mightiest of all drummming styles is taiko. When you see a top taiko outfit in full flow that's something else.

05/27/2006 | DRUMS are THE best instrument ever made. Those who say that it is annoying, or not that Fun-simply Sucked at the drums..hey it's ok, just don't give up on the drums in a month or two-it's not an instrument which once you learn all the notes you can play. Drums require much more skill, coordination, and rhythm. Many people dislike this instrument simply because they could not get used to them. Without drums i would never listen to music again. Just don't come and post a bad review and say they are obnoxious etc. because you don't know how to use them ;)

05/19/2006 |  IMO, drums are thee central component for which rock n roll is actually driven. On a personal note it was always the most natural instrument for me to play, yet like many, it unfortunately wasn't an option to own a kit while growing up. (Still, whenever I get a chance to bang on a set, I have a great time). This was the only reason I ever even picked up a guitar; I could lower the volume and play it through headphones if necessary. Years later when going to see bands live, I typically go to the side of the stage and watch what the drummer does with his feet.
Over the years I've noticed that a great drummer can really hold up a mediocre band, but the opposite is never true. To me, this speaks volumes about the vitality of such an instrument. The beat is the foundation for which a sound is built upon, and without a capable one, everything else falls to pieces. My short list of favorite drummers include: Martin Chambers (Pretenders), Terry Bozzio (Missing Persons/Frank Zappa), Clem Burke (Blondie), Stewart Copeland ( Police), Neil Peart (Rush), Budgie (Siouxsie & the Banshees), Topper Headon (the Clash), Gina Schock (the Go Go's), Casey Royer (the Adolescents) and of course typical standards like Charlie Watts (the Stones), John Bonham (Zepplin) and Keith Moon (the Who).

03/24/2005 | I played the drums for a while in junior high and even sat in with a band at a party. But I lost interest after that and just kind of forgot about it. I wasn't really that good.

02/09/2005 | I guess I'm a little biased (I've played drums for over 12 years), but I truely do feel drums is what holds a band together. Hell, thats the reason I started taking lessons way back in the first place! We may be in the background, but we defenetly make our presence known. Imagine seeing a rock band without the massive drumkit in the background, with the drummer swinging his drumsticks in a chaotic fashion, all the while keeping a perfect beat. The drums ARE rock n' roll!

03/23/2004 | In my opinion and personal tastes, drums and percussion are strictly for background and support. For this reason I generally dislike drum solos. Because of this, drums cannot be the best instrument as they simply cannot carry the music alone.

02/01/2003 | Having been a drummer for a number of years now, I have to brag on this instrument. Modern music would be lost without them. Songs with no beat are like peanutbutter without jelly. This hobby, while annoying to neighbors and family members, can also be an outlet for aggression or stress. You know, you get pissed off....go beat drums for a while. But the art of playing drums can really be a beautiful thing once it's mastered. When you get to the point where you can play drums with no other accompaniment and it sound great, distinct, and entertaining; then you know you've done it.

01/27/2003 | Im not sure where everybody got their information.I go by Knowledge.What you know.If you dont know rudiments, you dont know nothing.You can tell how much one knows if you listen to them try a pair of drum stiks. A piano is not a percussion instrument,It is a rythmn instrument.Drums and percussion instruments are two different families.Drums are drums, percussion instruments are congas,bongos,Cow bells,LP Equipment.Most drummers out there learn a couple basic rythmns and they become instant drummers.If they claim to be a pounder,they should not brag about it, pounder are a waste of time,energy, money and equipment.The equipment only goes so loud.They look stupid next to a knowledgeable drummer.they should find another way to impress people especially the little girls that go "Oh Wooooowwwww"

11/25/2002 | It does take a lot of coordination. I found it kind of hard to hit a crash every other beat while maintaining a 16 beat on a snare and a bass drum. Other than that, it's not a portable instrument. It's time consuming to put together and you can't play a song that people would possibly know if it's done by itself with no instruments.

10/26/2001 | The drums have always seemed kinda weird to me. I mean, who decided what "the drums" were? They're just a bunch of hunks of metal and stuff, I guess they're a good choice because you get all kinds of different sounds, but isn't it amazing, the range of possibility of what could be mounted on a drum set? A good drummer needs a lot of coordination and practice.

10/23/2001 | Absolutely essential in most forms of music to have some form of percussion. Even piano is a percussion instrument, and guitar keeps a rhythm with strumming. Great Drummers: Neil Peart, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Gene Krupa, Charlie Watts, Max Weinberg, Alex Van Halen.

10/16/2001 | This is, as TheFreak said, the backbone of a ROCK band. The other horrible bands mentioned aren't rock (they suck). Keith Moon is the best drummer ever. It provides the greatest energy of all the instruments. The drum solo in Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" is awesome.

10/15/2001 | All I hear is RatItAll ga ga, RateItAll goo goo, RateItAll ga ga...what are you people insane? Some of you gave the drums only a three star rating! Drums...the third crucial part of any good rock band (reason #3 why *NSYNC sucks). The drum set is the backbone of any band---they help to keep the beat of the song going, they provide some "energy" for the song, and are useful in many other ways. All you have to do is listen to a song in which Roger Taylor or Keith Moon or Charlie Watts played the drums, and you'll know what heaven is like. Sometimes, when I here people praising a song, all I hear out of them is "This-and-that singer is so good (looking)!" I mean, the singer is a crucial part of the great rock band (look at Freddie Mercury and John Lennon and Mick Jagger, for God's sake!), but the instruments are so underappreciated. I think it's terrible how some rock bands don't even think to use a set of drums to keep the beat going (e.g. *NSYNC, the Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees) and STILL get fans! Drums, Guitar, bass...IMPORTANCE!!!! MAJOR IMPORTANCE!!!! Take care, everyone!

Drums help fill in the rhythm, provide depth, and keep music consistent through transitions...Try these songs without a drummer: Walk this way (Aerosmith), In the Mood (Big band), Swing Swing Swing (big band), Shout to the Lord (WOW Christian). 08/03/2001 | This was man's first musical instrument and there is something very primal about a driving drum beat that goes across all cultures and connects with a part of every man that science just doesn't understand. It is very prehistoric in nature and can be seen in all classes in all countries throughout history. We might not understand it, but we all have that drum beat deep inside.

07/29/2001 | I've got to say, I do feel the drums are somewhat overrated--I'm not really sure why it's one of the "big 3" most everyone loves (drums, guitar, piano). That's not to say it's BAD, though, as it can compliment a song quite nicely, but it's required for very few songs, I feel. I do feel the drums could be taken out from most songs, and the songs would be almost just a good (with a few exceptions). It's a nice little extra, but not one of the more important instrumets musicians can use.
