They are beautiful to listen to. I have a question anyone can provide help with. Does anyone know anything about the quality of the Victory brand double french horns? Is it an okay investment for the $$$?

Cool solo instrument, but it lacks the balls of the mighty trombone...

I play the french horn in many different places, from band, orchestra, wind quintets, brass quintets, you name it. I have doubled on several instruments, and not once have I found an instrument that has a better sound or is more versital. I love the tuba and the oboe, but the french horn is definatly my favorite.

I played French Horn in a nationally ranked high school music program and never since then. Since then it's been guitar and bass in rock bands. I'm searching eBay for a copy of my old instrument. Most of the desired horns have been out of production for many years and are in the $2500 - 3500 range. A bit too pricey for the hobbyist. I played a Reynolds Contempora Double Horn, but I've found a single horn on eBay for sixteen bucks! We'll see how it goes. One of the things that makes french horn so versatile is that it is the fifth member of a woodwind quintet as well as a brass quintet!

I have never attempted to play the French Horn, but it is my understanding (and the other comments attest) that the instrument is one of the most difficult to play. In my opinion, the sound is soft and restrained, yet regal and majestic. The French Horn is one of my personal favorites, and easily one of the better musical instruments in the brass family.

I love the french horn!! I don't play it, but I have a very talented friend who does, and he says it is soo hard. He often talks of how his horn "cracks" on certain notes, and how hard it is to get the note you want out to come out right. I think that played correctly, horns are one of the most beautiful band instruments, and whoever undertakes this challege should be commended! I am also very jealous the you can play scales three octaves, where my saxophone can't!!

Okay, I'm sheepish. I played the French horn for a couple of years (I like the bass much better, thank you) and so what can I say? Y'all probably, unless you happen to play a horn, have no idea of how hard it is. I must have gotten the worst chapped lips in the history of the world from playing my horn. Plus, it only has three keys (valves) so when you press one valve and buzz, a million different notes come out. The French horn has the biggest range of any instrument...ask any musical expert you know. You just have to have a tough (and preferably young) pair of lungs and strong lips to even consider dreaming of thinking about playing the horn. Is it an instrument you want to make a living playing? No. But overall, it's a good thing to get to know, and a useful part of the orchestra and occasional rock band (John Entwistle plays French horn). Take care, everyone!

Sure it's a warm, mellow, beautiful sound- I'd probably give it four stars, but it doesn't belong in the number one instrument spot. The problem with these horns is that even the greatest players seem to have trouble attacking the note. It's always awkward-sounding when they start out the note- it's almost like there's 2 little grace notes before the full sound actually comes through. Oh well, maybe it's just me. Don't get me wrong- I really like French horns, but I had to give it three stars to bring it down a healthy bit.
