 | irishgit (150) 04/09/2008 | I'm biased here, because this instrument was a device of torture in every "music" class I took in grade school.
I've heard it played lyrically since, but all I could get out of it were noises that sounded like I was tormenting a rat.

 | ma duron (63) 08/04/2006 | An 'Aerophone' important in music of the Renaissance and baroque periods. Usially made from wood, with a wide, tapering, bore. Loss of favor from having remained largely undeveloped, "generally discarded from around 1750 in favor of the Traverse Flute." ('Musical Instruments of the World', Bantam Books)

 | The Waffler (1) 11/03/2001 | A more hideous sound was never produced than that of a roomful of fourth-graders playing recorders. Shrill, screechy creations that should be forever banned.

 | stooge (0) 08/04/2001 | The recorder has been the introduction of many children to the world of music. Many children who would have been overwhelmed by a piano or a violin, can learn to enjoy and love music by playing a few simple songs on the recorder. It is small, it can be carried in a pocket, it is easy to learn, and inexpensive to buy. If you want to cultivate the love of music in a young child, don't buy them a tape or CD, buy them a recorder and see what happens. After a few concerts for grandma, and some encouragement from the family, it might lead to something big.

 | ashleys (23) 07/29/2001 | I'm feeling rather special, because my recorder was not the classic brown, but pink and blue. "Mary Had a Little Lamb" was never so melodic until it came from the end of that tube of plastic. And I'll never forget that girl who sat through half of our lesson blowing her recorder through the wrong end. Now, my once beloved recorder sits in my Radio Flyer amidst hay in the garage. Ohhh, the memories...

 | Frank15 (0) 07/29/2001 | I would love to be able to master the piano some day... I can already beautifully play "Release Me" on the recorder, or at least as beautifully as a recorder can sound. The sound that the recorder emits is pretty bad, definitely NOT something I'd want to listen to! However, I DO have to give it some credit for the sheer ease of use--it is an easy way to get introduced to other, harder-to-use instruments, and someday down the road, when I'm a master pianist, maybe I'll have the dinky little recorder to thank. I just with the piano were as easy to master...

 | SamIAm (5) 07/27/2001 | Ahh, those fond memories of 2nd Grade when our music teacher handed out the coveted brown recorder in the little pleather case complete with cleaning rod. This was my first musical instrument experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I recently purchased a recorder for my young sons..I don't remember them screeching so annoyingly when I played them..Maybe the boys will enjoy the guitar..or drums..The recorder is not their instrument. Not that it would take them very far. Is this just an introduction to musical instruments? I mean there aren't any master recorderists or recorderers, are there? Anyway, a good way to introduce kids to the responsibility as well as basics of learning and owning an instrument.

 | Wiggum (17) 07/18/2001 | Did all school districts across the U.S. subject their students to these annoying brown sticks, or was it just mine? I guess recorders help musically-impaired kids (like me) learn some of the basics, but man these things were just boring. And are they played by anyone outside of grade school?
