Thanks to Sesame Strret, everytime I see someone playing a sax, I want to give them a rubber ducky! Anyways, the saxophone is a great sounding instrument. I really like the sounds it makes when it's played in jazz.

It's great in a horn section but it's been abused on many an unlistenable jazz recording and sh*te pop tunes by cr@p pop acts like Spandau Ballet

Saxamaphone! Playing the flute, it would probably be quite easy for me to pick up the basics, but I dont have a sax. Maybe I should borrow one from my school...hmm, I should actually!Anyway,it's great having Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons playing the sax, great role model for young saxophone enthusiasts!

The result of a clever idea of the 19th century: put a clarinet mouthpiece on a brass tube, combining the flexibility of a woodwind with the power of a brass instrument. Like most wind instruments that come in multiple sizes but share a common fingering system, it is a transposing instrument, so if you play a C scale (on paper) on the various saxes it will sound in Eb (on the alto and baritone), in Bb (on the tenor and soprano) --this often confuses beginning players but is a sensible idea for making the instruments easier to learn. Sounds great in the hands of a master, as VV notes, but of all the wind instruments the tone probably sounds worst when badly played, maybe because it can be so loud and piercing.

The saxophone is jazzy, smooth and sexy when played by the masters. Working for rock (eg Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street), blues and jazz, the saxophone is also very versatile in accompaniment or as a solo instrument. Moreover, the sax players always seem to have an eccentric aura about them. With a tenor saxophone especially, one has the best of the woodwind class of musical instruments.

I play the sax in my school band, and I love it! You can play many styles, and sound good doing it. It is an extremely hard instrument to play, and you have to practice to be any good. The wood sound is a characteristic I like and a typical of instruments with a reed. I have also found that different reeds can control that sound and you can manipulate it to play a "brass-type" sound. The sax rules!! I play it becouse my grandmother played it and she was really good. But a word to the wise- it is the most expensive marching band instrument. My brand new one cost about 1500 dollars.

My little brother is learning how to play one with the school band, and since he's really enthusiastic with it, he practices a lot and he sounds good and does well with it. I also have a friend my age who plays saxophone better than anyone I have ever seen (in real life). But to me, the way they play it sounds plainly woodwind-ish, and not like you see on TV with like jazz musicians. So I'm just wondering how they get that jazz sound, because even my little expert friend can't play like that. I think maybe you have to have played it and practiced for a long time to get that jazz sound. (so I really respect yall saxophonists!)

Good saxophonists sound good, but until the player has had a lot of experience, they sound really bad

It is smooth and cool. It's a great solo instrument, especially for jazz and 50s rock & roll.

I play the sax, so of course I'm gonna rate it a five. Madgar is right that I chose it in band because I thought it was the cool instrument. But Medgar is wrong in the fact that it's the most popular one; most kids wanted to belong to the percussion section. My dad wanted me to play the flute, because he thought that was what girls stuck with the most, but that instrument wasn't high on my priority list. I think, however, that kids stick with the sax the most. In my 80 piece band, we have 11 altos when we really only need about 2. As a result, we have to stuff socks in our bells. Regardless, the fact still remains that the saxophone has the best sound of any instrument.

When kids chose what instrument they want to pursue (if any) in school band, I recall that saxophone was probably the most popular along with the trumpets. Saxophones are pretty lame and ridiculous-looking in concert bands. Kids like it because they always picture themselves as some jazz dude. A good tenor saxophone can be the most mellow sound. Soprano saxes remind me too much of Kenny G. John Coltrane is probably my favorite saxophonist of all time.
