"Brrlaattt!!" A whale of a 'horn,' by any other name - also, an 'Aerophone.'

It is "a valved brass instrument with a wide conical bore, flared bell, and cup-shaped mouthpiece. It is characterized by its large size and deep sound." (from: 'Musical Instruments of the World, Bantam Books')

There are three sizes to modern orchestral tubas: 'contrabass'; 'bass'; and 'F bass'.

Musical pieces in the classical repertoire that highlight passages for the tuba: Hector Berlioz' 'Symphonie Fantastique (in the Dies Irae)'; Johannes Brahms' 'Tragic Overture' and Richard Wagner's Funeral March, in 'Gotterdammerung' from the Ring of the Nibelungen.

A band just isn't complete without the bassline sound of the tuba

necessity in band, people who dont like it obviously have only heard bad tuba players, when you hear what the tuba can do on vaughn-williams tuba concerto, come back and rate it again. It takes a lot of skill and presicion to be accurate and gracefull on such a cumbersome instrument. For all its negatives, there are so many more positives.

A former cute female Tuba player. I had Tuba solos my senior year in high school (yes, Tuba songs do exist) and I loved it! Unfortunately, tubas usually are relegated to bomp, bomp bompa bomp in the back of the band. All the guys I played Tuba with were really weird D&D geeks and they drove me crazy.

A big cumbersome instrument that, I don't think, is really noticeable or needed in the music world. Plus, you never heard of Steve the tuba player getting all of the hot chicks in high school.
