Unfortunately, I can only give this 1 star. Unfortunate, because I can't go into negative stars. This brand is terrible. One problem after another. I bought a Compaq computer in 2006. Come to find out, two years later, that the parts they used to make it- WERE MADE IN 1985. Do NOT trust Compaq as your source for a computer. Not only that, but they have terrible customer service, many people complain about Compaq's customer support. You cannot rely on them, they install pointless things that come with their computer. The computer I have, the disktray does not have a button to push it back it back in itself, I have to forcefully push it. It needed a definite RAM enhancement, and even then, it is not good enough. I, like many people who bought a Compaq, are disappointed. Please consider ANY other computer BUT a Compaq.

I own Pressario V5000 and it is the worst crap I ever had! The first laptop broke in one week. And I discovered it acidently. The dvd-rom just did not read CDs. Since it was only a first week, I brought it back to the Best Buy and the gave me another one. But in a few months I had a series of problems... dvd-rom did not burn DVDs and there were series of error messages. When I contacted a Support Center, all they could say was to recover all my data, after non of their suggestions worked. I did it 5 times!!! Now my laptop hardly can recognize mouse and after RErecognition it just switches off!! It tries to download something in black skrin mode, but it does not work and it only says "mouse initialise error". It allso freezes all the time, and all Technical Support can say is to recover data! I'm so angry at them! That is what they say all the time! I want to return it and get my money back! Worst computer ever! Never buy it!

i have only had my laptop for 3mnths, and already the hard drive had to be replaced, and is the computer working properly now, well you have to be kidding, it freezes and shuts down on me continually. do the compaq people help, you are really joking now, they have had me completely reinstall the system twice now. this is not a joke, i have never been so ripped off in my life. i will never buy another compaq again.

Worst computer I ever had. It's been one problem after another. At 9 months the hard drive died. They sent me a new drive with 9 recovery CDs and expected me to install the new drive and restore it to original status as when I bought the computer. Not being a techie, I feared I'd mess it up, so I hired a professional. It took him 6 1/2 hours to do the job. He said they could have sent me a drive that already had all the software on it and the job could have been done in two hours or less, including the transfer of all my data. The warranty states that they cover parts and labor, but they have refused to pay for the labor. I'm coming up on the 11 1/2 month mark now and the fan in the computer now sounds like an airplane engine - no exaggeration, it's that loud. I'm at the end of my rope with Compaq. I would never purchase another compaq or HP computer. The person I hired to do the job for me said that after seeing what they sent me, he would never recommend them either.

We have had this Compaq Presario SR1103WM for about 2 years and it hasn't crashed once and it is just as fast now as it was on the day of the purchase. Highly recommended.

Wonderful computer. Still runs brilliantly and I've had it since 1998 (compaq presario 5100c)

had one it was great!
NYStateOfMind 03/23/2003
I had a Presario 2620. Old, yes, picked it up in 98 for six hundred dollars. First year, the system crashed out horribly twice. After that crash, all it did was freeze up. Windows 98 had to be reinstalled 11 times and it wouldn't accept anything but the Win98 disk that came with the package until I figured out how to get around that. Not upgradeable at all. Worst garbage I've ever owned, and I know computers. I had a Compaq laptop back in 1997, too, which was also crap. Still, stuck with the stinky Presario till 2002 (somehow, with lots of maintenance) living with 1.3G and 64 megs until I built my own stupid REAL computer. I use Dells at work, and they are far superior in every way.

been in shop 5 times. cd burner went bad first month I hgad it, hard drive crashed after 1 year.

Buy a CompCrap if you are a masochist. Bought 5430US in 2/02. Within a few months, slowed terribly, then started shutting off and rebooting more and more frequently...until it was almost always endlessly looping. Tried to backup and restore using Restore CD...IT didn't work. Took it in for repairs: failed chip. Got it home with a new chip. Ran like a 286 or worse. Brought it back. Hard Drive was defective so they installed new HD. Still crawling. They then said it needed a new IDE cable. Have not yet turned it on this evening, as I can't bear the thought of facing yet a new masochistic torture. Do NOT but a CompCrap. You'll regret it. A nightmare.
mablewis 11/23/2002
I'm giving it a 1, only because they do not offer negative numbers! Compaq's are crap! We bought one and have had nothing but trouble for 3 years. It is a 5360 Presario with an mv720 monitor. Thank god the monitor just blew up, now we are going to buy a whole new system (probably a gateway). WE have been on the phone with tech support numerous hours over the past 3 years and are sick of it. We also talked our friends into buying a compaq after we "thought" we were getting a great deal at first. Between the 3 sets of compaq computers that we and our friends have purchased, we have been through 3 harddrives and 2 modems (2 of these systems are less than 2years old--most of these problems occurred within the firstyear). Not to mention the fact that ours is the second monitor to go. NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN!! We have learned our lesson. Hopefully in about a month, I will be able to get on here and give an outstanding rating for our gateway!! If this computer turns out to be crap, then I will give up on them altogether and just suck it up and deal with the problems!! Please-- if you are thinking about buying a compaq or HP or similar-please rethink. Check your options-more money could save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Don't forget--all salespeople will say that "theirs is the best". That's what they get paid to say-please visit forums like this one to get the real juice on these systems!!

Wow .... never knew crap could cost so much. $2316 spent and the only thing decent is the 19" monitor that came with my Presario 7000. I have been involved with computers for 20 years and feel kind of stupid buying one of these things. Don't buy a Compaq. About the only hardware changes you can make are to the PCI cards and adding memory. Forget about changing the video card. You must stick with the NVIDIA TNT that came with it. Thank god at least they put a decent vid card in it. I've had to restore mine from the restore CD 4 times in 1.5 years. The more software you add the slower it gets. It's 1.2ghz with 768MB of ram and runs as slow as my P1 166mhz HP that I sold for a 100 bucks. DOH!!!! Go for a Dell (dude) or a Gateway and not an HP. HP just bought Compaq recently so maybe .... just maybe they might improve the quality of their machines. Stear clear of Compaq. Compaq bought DEC who service VAX machines which are no longer being supported. So why would you buy a machine from someone who is into outdated junk technology. If you want to make some executive rich at least go with one who is actually trying to give you good service.

I have a model 5242. My first computer, had it for 2 years and totally trouble free. I am now having one built by Digirex, if its as good as this one I will be happy. Any one had any experience with Digirex?
ericsaraht 11/01/2001
I had written about not getting my CD burner to work, and how poor their Customer Service was. Well, the CD burner works, and I'm actually quite satisfied with my computer overall, but their service was still not the greatest. I'm upping my rating to "ok"
callmetootie 08/15/2001
Great viewing and makes computers worth while.

I just bought a 5004US. I tried to use the CD to burn some MP3's. After many frustrated hours of reading the help menue and other information, I call Support. I could not get it to work because the CD Drive didn't work. Now on day 14 the machine is in the shop. I have now found out that there are constant problems with Compac. I tried to return the broken thing to Circuit City and they informed me that there would be a 15% restocking charge. I guess they restock and then sell broken computers. I like the way the Compac performs other functions, but I am worried that this computer will remain a problem. I would not buy another Compac. Support was helpful. They told me to take in to be repaired.
Pete 01/12/2001
These are certainly dependable. They offer service wherever you are in the world. Good after sales service. The components are also dependable.
Tonic T 01/09/2001
The Compaq desktop computer has a bad reputation of breaking down before the year warranty is up. I know of three incidents including my own where we had to call the computer 800 number on a consistent basis.
avster 01/09/2001
Powerful machines that are very user friendly, especially for students. Unfortunately, because the machine is built in a certain manner, upgrading hardware is next to impossible.
pinnybean 01/09/2001
My roommate has this computer and regrets it. I have rebuilt her hard drive because it crashed. It still doesn't work right, and starts up in safe mode all the time for no reason, and the desktop always crashes, leaving a white warning screen. This is the worst computer I have ever used. I have to keep it running instead of customer support because they won't honor the warranty because she lost the receipt.
PoorOldEdgarDe rby 12/31/2000
Just bought a new 7478 and even though I had to return the first one due to constant locking up I'm so far pretty satisfied. It may just be because of what I was working on before this that I am just in awe of how much more power I have now. Still it was a reasonable price and I was able to get a DVD and CD-RW drive for under $1,000. ADDITION TO MY ORIGINAL MESSAGE ON 5/30/00 I've downgraded this computer system to 3 stars from 4 stars for the following reasons: my system while overall decent has become progressively worse in terms of crashing, stalled programs, inability to ever shutdown properly and consistently becoming overloaded to the point of having to shutdown in order to clear the memory. I should say on the point of memory that I have uprgraded my memory so I have a total of 192 MB of RAM which should be more than enough for constant daily use yet it appears that the system manages the resources so poorly that I need to shutdown and clear memory at least twice a day. I can no longer defragment, clean up, or optimize the use of my disk drive, my system won't allow it. If I go to system maintenance I will only be able to clean up 1% of my hard drive before it begins again and never gets past that 1%. When I go to shutdown my computer I am only able to have Windows shutdown properly, at best, once out of ever fifteen tries. Finally, it's gotten so bad that my computer also has to be turned off (via power strip) whenever any one program stops responding. No longer can I go and shutdown one individual program because when I do it locks up my entire computer. All of these problems add up to one enormous headache. When it's working properly it works very well but lately, as you can see, it rarely works so well. Let's put it this way, if things don't improve via my upgrading software that somehow cleans all this out and tells me it's more of a Microsoft problem, I'll be hard pressed to choose a Compaq again.
Ali S 12/11/2000
When I bought it, it was really cheap compared to other computers in the market. It is still cheaper. However, when you buy it, you have to buy Windows 95 or 98 too. The CD that comes with it formats everything and install original component. Afterall, it is a good deal.
Caldude 12/04/2000
I've had the opportunity to work with several different top name computers, Compaq, being one of them. Unfortunately, their limited customer service and cheap parts didn't go too well with my expectations. The upside is that they are somewhat affordable.
sargeras69 11/27/2000
I don't like the fact that there's no space to incorporate more things into the PC. Slots for additional floppies or CD-Roms would be helpful.
Femballer3 11/24/2000
Slow pace, not that quick. Didn't like the setup.
Knotty 11/17/2000
WACK(sorry ass computer). I bought mine in '98 before I knew anything about them. The thing came out with 3 gigs and 60 MB's of RAM. I can't even hold a full WAV album without running out of space. Not to mention hardware quality.
Swt Angel 11/17/2000
Compaq Presario computer deserves the rating of a 4. It's a reliable computer. Easy features, not too complicated. Many of my family and friends agree. The model of the computers also stands out.
Juan 11/17/2000
Quite possibly the worst machine ever built. Check out www.compaqsucks.com. I have never had a good experience with them and never heard of anyone who has.
remillard 11/16/2000
The Compaq Presario Series is a poorly designed system. Constant hardware conflicts make it an unreliable system to use with any regularity. One would be better off buying a computer that is built for your specifications.
Nagra 11/13/2000
This computer is a piece of trash from the inside out. Whoever buys one is a sucker. As a computer technician, I feel offended having to even look at one. All of the components suck, poor quality, poor software, annoying restore disks, and I am not able to upgrade.
crazytrain 11/08/2000
These computers work OK, but they have a lot of unecessary junk on them that slows them down and makes them hard to work on.
gotrice 11/08/2000
I hate Compaq because it's not very upgradeable. Not many parts fit with this computer.
JoeyJ 11/08/2000
The Persario is a great personal computer with many more features that few PC's seem to have. They are affordable and have the newest features such as built in CD Roms and Zip drives.
dchang 11/07/2000
The Compaq Presario Series isn't compatible with anything. I bought a CD burner for the Compaq but it didn't work.
1kbear83710 11/07/2000
Dissapointed with what I got. Some problems with the hardware where the customer service was marginally helpful. It's an okay computer, but not what I would buy if I was doing it again. Sometimes when I "suspend" it doesn't come back on and I have to power off/on again.
etan 11/06/2000
Comes with a lot of pre-installed crap that takes up too much room on your drive. My A drive broke, and it was very hard to install my burner.
johnyi 11/02/2000
The Compaq was very cheap, and that was the main reason why I bought the computer. After two months the hard drive broke but Compaq fixed the problem ASAP.
doctorski20 11/02/2000
Same problems as the Presario laptop except for a few minor things. You can't upgrade parts. The computer is purposely not pre-loaded with drivers needed to run the upgrades. Even if you talk to their customer support, they will try to convince you to buy their products which can cost you upwards of several hundred dollars.
crystalguy 11/01/2000
I bought one a year ago and I since got rid of it because it is not too easy to upgrade. With this computer the user's hands are tied as far as upgrading goes. But it was a good, reliable computer and great customer service.
neuezied 11/01/2000
I call these machines COMCRAP. My family has owned two (one not of our choice). Both have had numerous hardware problems, including hard drive and modem failure! Don't buy COMCRAP!
ross 10/31/2000
Good machine that works well. Support that is there to help. I really like how well it's put together.
pisleta 10/30/2000
Reliable. Lasts long. A bit overpriced. My Presario is now four years old and it's still doing well.
garyc 10/25/2000
I own one and it's okay for browsing. Not a very good setup it came with and doesn't perform very well when it comes to gaming.
u2357 10/24/2000
Lightweight and easy to use. Excellent mouse. Powerful. Long lasting battery.
Padilla 10/24/2000
My hard drive completely erased. OS constantly failed me. It was unreliable and very unstable.
telaydras 10/23/2000
Good computer for the price, but Compaq has a few bugs that really need fixing from as far back at 5051 to my own 7900Z. The screen dies, and won't come back up until you can figure out perfect timing between two buttons (power).
frustrated as hell 10/21/2000
i thought i was getting a good deal when i purchased a presario 7000, one of those models that you pick what you want. what i received was a box full of crap. i can't stress this enough. don't even, for a second, consider a compaq! they are terrible systems. in fact they should seriously consider changing their name to " a box of crap". that is what i got for my hard earned money, a box of crap that i can't return. not only should i be able to return it, but i should be able to sue the co. for all of the stress that their product has caused me. here's the deal. if you're dead set on buying compaq, add on another thousand to the price of the system for asprin. believe me, you'll need em.
