www.blackcider.com says it all. The logic boards fail consistently on iBooks. No one should buy a system that is KNOWN to be faulty, and that the company refuses to replace parts or acknowledge their error.

The new iBook G4 is a real winner - it's fast enough for all the day to day tasks, it takes the knocks well, it doesn't get so hot that you can't use it on your lap, it's small and light enough to carry around without thinking about it, it's really good value and Panther makes the small screen into a big one with Exposé. It runs all the software I need for work and play and the airport extreme card is excellent. After 13 years of using Mac's I can't find a single fault with it - and I am a world class fault finder. My opinion - avoid the Powerbook G4's, they're too expensive and have serious design flaws - get yourself an iBook G4 and a dual processor G5 with a huge cinema display for your heavy work - with iDisc and .Mac having two machines is no longer the pain it used to be - and iSight is very cool - I'm enjoying free video calls to my colleagues over the world - it's not perfect but it's a workable start.

OS X The single greatest operating system. Mac has continued to improve the best interface. Microsoft has failed miserably every time since windows 3.1. Just like Shadowbreath said 2 years and 9 months later, everyday use, NOT ONE CRASH. I've replaced 1 charger and 1 Battery. Best investment yet. Airport is the best wireless access I have found.

The NEW iBook (white) is a truly marvelous machine. Not so flashy as the candy-colored G3s, way more functional. There are a lot of nice little features built in that you won't notice until you use them. Not to mention that it ships with OS X. PC users take note: I've been using this notebook for 5 months and it has never crashed! Not once!

Just like its sibling, the Apple iMac, this notebook like something out of the 60's. Its color scheme makes it stand out, but when you get close you see a smaller than adequate display. The laptops shape makes it awkward at times to carry.

The original iBooks were kind of sketchy in my opinion at first. Now, with the iBookDVSE, I think I might just buy one. 6 hour battery life, DVP, 466-750cx microprocessor, AIV out, and a sense of style makes this my next computer to drool over. Even for $1,799, I still want one!

I got this computer as a school computer and I do like the superlong battery life, but I think the screen is too small for its resolution. I think the speed of the machine would be better if they put more memory. I do like the DVD player and the digital output though.

Apple has always had a good thing going with PC compatibility, with floppy disks, however, it seems as though they are eliminating this gradually. The lack of a 3 1/2" floppy drive serves as more of an inconvience to fellow Mac users that want to transfer data as well as eliminating all PC users.

I like its desktop model, the IMac. Apple IBook is a great computer for those on the go that want something fast, simple and user friendly. The keyboard is a little small though and tends to annoy those used to full size ones.

A friend of mine just bought one of these from a company had picked up a whole slew of these for their employees and then folded. They were selling them for a song so I'd say he got a pretty good deal. However, if he had payed the $1,300-$1,800 that these new ones can cost I'd be thinking that there would have been better ways for him to spend his money. The iBook is by no means a bad computer but it's also not a great one. Interesting design (although I tend to think it looks like something that a company would make with the intention of marketing to 10 year olds, a colorful well encased watered down version of mom and dads computer), and it has some decent features such as the wide base for your palms, a nice big clear screen etc. However, compared to the level of performance of some of the other laptops out right now and the iBook is about 1/2 a year behind. I think the fasted iBook right now is maybe 450 mhz..and there are certainly a lot of pc laptops pushing way faster than that and a lot of the for about the same money. Besides I'm curious to see how long these Lifesaver colored designs last for before people just feel silly carrying them around.

It would have gotten a 5 if it weren't a macintosh. The colors are neat and makes me just want to buy one for that fact. If only a PC company would catch on and make cool computers like Apple. And Apples are way faster than PC's.

The lightest and most stylistic notebook. The Apple operating system is great. By far the easiest computer to use, not to mention the best monitor I've seen on a notebook.

It looks nice at least but it needs more compact size such as the Sony superslim 505s. The speed is pretty good and the playback for multimedia is great.

It's a Mac! It can't run half the software out there because of it. However, the design is wonderful. Apple should come out with more colors though. That would sell.

A sleek design, so it's easier on the eyes than a PC. The movie imaging software is a plus, but there isn't much in the way of games that this platform can handle.

The Apple ibook's are very fast. I worked at the Apple lab in Cupertino and sell them faster than PC labtops. I believe they are good labtops. Very sturdy but expensive.

Everyone keeps talking about how smoking fast these processors are and how great the computers are etc. I can understand if you grew up using a Mac how you might think (mistakenly) that it is easier to navigate through than windows. It might be true that they don't lock up as often as Windows (something that is very annoying). But the processors really aren't that fast and usually cost more compared to the processors for a PC oh and by the way IBM makes almost all of Mac's processors for Apple.

Mac certainly is NOT going to discontinue the iBook. They are the top selling notebook (PC/Mac right now. I've been using the iBook for two months now. LIKES: Can use at home w/modem and at work with LAN. Easy to switch networks, printers, resolution, multiple programs. More rugged than many thinner portables, so I can let my kid use it. Can set it to sleep when case is closed and wake at same spot in same program in 10-15 seconds when opened, no need to re-boot. Can set function keys to open files, start programs. Runs for 5-6 hours on battery every time. Recharges in two or less while you work. Fast graphics (get new "Bugdom" download!) clear screen. Cheap ($30) Epson cable to use old printer with USB. Easy to move since only one USB plug to connect from USB hub to use 4-8 items at once: zip drive, joystick, tablet, printer, etc. Trackpad can be set to click and is less stressful than mouse. Dislikes: It has no microphone input, so you must use a USB A/V adapter to use voice input. A floppy would be handy at times, (but I am migrating to the zip anyway.) Wish it had DVD and Firewire like the new iMac, but I can can probably add DVD via USB next year when I upgrade the memory to 96MB when prices come down.

So I waited 3 mos with the dumb thing on back-order, only to find out 1 week after receiving it that Mac has discontinued them. Doesn't show their faith in the product, does it? Hate the lack of floppy and peripheral ports--you can EITHER plug in a mouse OR a zip drive, but certainly not both. And the keyboard keys are sunk into the base, making it difficult to know, with out staring at your fingers, where your hands are. I may still like it yet--but I don't guarantee it!
