 | Ozzman (0) 03/21/2004 | Richard Petty is the greatest NASCAR Grand National-Winston Cup of all time.
most people say that dale earnhardt is. dale was a great driver, but nothing compaired to the king.
they say that dale is better because he raced against guys like wallace, elliott, gant, DW, bobby & davey allison, terry labonte, alan kulwicki and even the king and won championships.
but petty raced against guys like the allison brothers, david pearson, benny parsons, the bakers, lee petty, bobby issac, cale yarbrougho and dale earnhardt (dales rookie year was in 79, the year petty won his final championship).
plus petty also won 200 races. more than half of what earnhardt had.
and petty also won 7 daytona 500's too.

 | alrightjim (0) 12/25/2002 | He has almost twice as many victories as the number two man on that list, David Pearson. He has won as many NASCAR championships as any man, seven. Prior to 1973, a man could run in more races than now and against a much weaker field. NASCAR was not the big money sport it is now, a family operation like the Petty's or Wood Brothers could compete and dominate the sport. Still, no other man besides Richard came out of those days with near the success he enjoyed. Was Pearson a more gifted driver? Odds are, he was, his head to head struggles with Petty fairly indicate such, but for whatever reason, Pearson just didn't get the WORK done that Richard did. A blend of talent, persistence and pedigree seldom equaled at any time in sport history, Petty is one of the greatest athletes this country ever produced, and hands down the greatest driver in racing history. If he doesn't deserve five stars, then the only being that deserves five stars at this site, is God.

 | Roland Via (0) 12/21/2002 | A great driver and the ultimate gentleman of the sport. Absolute fan favorite because of accessibility. Wins came as a result of the advantage of money and machinery (the Hemi!) over drivers in 60's & 70's though.

 | BigBadTA (0) 11/23/2002 | The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. period. who is going to beat 200 career wins? nobody.

 | jester69 (0) 11/15/2002 | He won alot of races because he had 10 times the money as anyone else. Doesn't even play in the same feild as Earnhardt.

 | Jason1972 (6) 10/21/2002 | There's not much to say, he's the only one, besides Earnhardt, to be the only driver to be successful and own his own team at the same time. These days, it's virtually impossible to do that. To be a CEO and a driver, there's only so many days in a week.

 | bbev46060 (0) 02/11/2001 | I'd have more respect for the man if he would have retired before he turned into a perennial backmarker, like Darrell Waltrip has been for the last several years.
