Kim Zmeskal came to the 1992 Olympics as the reigning All Around World Champion. At Barcelona, her best results were sixth place on the floor, and eighth place in the vault.

Kim Zmeskal was an amazing gymnast. I think that it is really sad the way the media affected her, but that kind of attention comes with the territory. I don't know if anyone can handle the pressures of expectations elevated to that level. Maybe some people in positions like hers don't notice them, but I'm not sure whether they can realize and handle them, especially at such a young age. I don't think Olympic athletes that young have a good perspective on the Olympics for the most part.

1992 Olympic national champion- the US had high hopes for this perky blond. But in Barcelona, she wasn't the team leader and choked when the US needed her. She was a good gymnast in her time, but time has flowed away.

Kim Zmeskal was the first world all-around champion the United States has ever had in gymnastics. She was a three-time US National all-around champion, two-time American Cup champion, and went into the Olympic Games holding 3 out of 5 possible world titles: All-Around, Floor Exercise, and Balance Beam. She could have very well been the Vault world-champion but was taken out of that event final to give another gymnast international exposure. She was the best gymnast in the world and America's sweetheart in 1992. If you haven't seen Kim Zmeskal's fall off the balance beam at the Olympics in '92, you're living under a rock. But what was so remarkable was that she fought all the way back from her fall in compulsories to make the all-around finals, beating out every single competitor in the field during the optional competition. I really don't know how she did it..in fact, not many people do..it was just amazing..especially with the media all over her every single move. Kim Zmeskal handled her Olympic experience with the utmost grace and dignity even when faced with a disapppointing and unexpected outcome. Not once, during that entire competition, did she shed a tear, even though we all would have understood if she had. She never complained, never blamed anybody, not even the stress fracture in her left ankle that no one knew about until after the Games..and never once, to this day, used it as an excuse..or even the Olympics Trials that she really won but was placed in second - the world champion! - right before the Olympics. At all of 16 years old, she displayed an incredible amount of graciousness and integrity. She is a true example of a champion on and off the competition floor.
