Vilas blended an artist's instinct with superb athletic ability to develop what are probably the most beautiful ground strokes the game has ever seen. To me, this counts, much more than whether he lost to Borg or anyone else. Setting his winning record aside and focusing on natural, God-given talent, he belongs on the top-five list with Borg, Sampras, Laver and McEnroe.

The all-time king of South American tennis. Brought latin glamour (didn't he used to date Princess Caroline back in '82?) and machismo to a tennis world populated by pasty-faced, skinny armed aussies, brits and yanks. Had that powerful one-handed backhand and backhand smash. Although rightly thought of as a clay-court specialist he was an underrated all-court player as evidenced by his Aussie opens and Masters Title on grass. Still has the all-time Open era winning streak of 50 matches dating back to '77. On the negative side, his great love for the game caused him to hang around at least three years too long on tour.

Guillermo Vilas is the greatest tennis player of all time and will go down in history as the ultimate CHAMPION of the sport. He has transcended the game in a way that no other has and what people dont realize is the impact he has left on so many people and the influence he has had on the sport and so many players. If it weren't for Vilas, we would not have the top Argentine players that we have today for he has marked their path of hard work, determination and tenacity to its fullest. Thanks to Vilas, there was Becker, Leconte, Muster and all the argentine players of today. If only people could truly realize the impact this man has left and how he is more than just a tennis statistic. He is a role model and never will there ever be another Guillermo Vilas; he is one and only and deserves more than just these five stars...

To me Vilas could have been a great player, however, he usally ended up losing to Borg. His greatest triumph was the 1977 U.S. Open when he beat Connors. One of the greatest clay court players of all time.

Amazing player and character. He played at a time when personality mattered(Vitas, Mac, Jimbo, Borg, Nastase),which helped create the tennis boom in the late 70's and 80's. Awesome back court game coupled with a manly one handed backhand not seen again till Thomas Muster dominated the clay circuit in the early 90's. Unfairly suspended for a year in the early 80's for accepting appearance money in exhibition tournaments when hundreds of other pro's were doing the same, his level of play was never the same as his glory days when he beat Jimbo in the last Forrest Hills US Open and when he teamed with fellow countryman Jose Louis Clerc to lift Argetina to the top level of the Davis Cup.

Great clay court player. His massive serving arm looked like a leg compared to his other arm. Always wondered if he could have been better had he showed more desire. Was rated the number one tennis player in the 1970s for awhile.
