Very good all around player. Not enough power for the big girls like the williams sisters though. Tough to beat the he-women.

The humilliation (Brought upon herself) she had to endured at the 99 french open weakened her mentally, she was never the sane after that...

Hingis played/plays a very intelligent game and had/has some very accurate shots. But it s just not enough to compete with the best of the best. The service was weak. I think she improved a bit there now. I guess, she was pretty lucky to find that gap when Graf was injured and the before the young power generation came up. This is why she never won more Major-Titles. There was one great year: 1997. More than 200 weeks numer one - that sounds great. But again: it was the time before the new generation of power players came up. She was/is a pretty good player - but definitely not on one level with Graf, Navratilova, Evert, Seles, Court... and her behaviour when she lost was not really that big plus.... She has all chances no to prove that people like me are wrong!

i dont know if she was the smartest player - but definitely she was the most naughty won. embarrassing how respectless she talked about her opponents and that she always felt being treated unfair and misunderstood. when she would have been able to show courage and fighting spirit - in that time loosing more and more to the more powerfull players - she gave up and finished her short carreer. just a number one just between two periods.

Maybe she's the smartest women tennis player. She reigned short after Graf was injured and Williams sisters still at their beginning... if only she had more powerful serve... it'll be more than enough to compete again in WTA tour... too bad she won't have it. But other than weak serve... overall she is complete player with brilliant strategies and shots. Too bad... so sad... she isn't as strong as Davenport or Williamses

A true sook and her disgraceful perfomance against Steffi Graf in that French Final says it all.....Very petulant and no grace but had a beautiful game none the less...Better than Kournikova by a mile but should stay retired although had she remained on the tour she would have definately won more grand slams as the William's and Davenport are all but finished. Would be great to see her return though and beat someone like the god awful Sharapova...Her career will be defined by one word: 1997

martina was (or will be again) a pretty nice world class tennis player... she had a nice game and a lot of touch. her serve was very bad. in her success she took profit on the fact of the gap of an often injured steffi graf in her last years and the upcoming of the new power generation with the williams-sisters for example. in that way she was just a player between... these are the sportive facts . me personally i found her one of the less sympathic players. she never showed respects for others. she called mauresmo a man for example, she made jokes about davenport and about the mascular william-sisters. she said that graf is not really a great player. she just played such a long time. this is not something special. and think of how she acted in that french open final in 1999.that was ashaming. for me she is a pretty immature person. champions respect others and fight on the court. hope she will learn a bit about herself and others. not in facts and neither as a person a real great player.

Too bad she cashed in her chips early. I think she was a weaker #1- compared to some others. Kournikova and Hingis - a doubles team made in heaven...

Hingis was number one player altogether for 209 weeks. Using this criteria she is the fourth best player of all time. (1st Graf 377 weeks, 2nd Navratilova 331 weeks, 3rd Evert 262 weeks, 5th Seles 178, 6th Serena Williams 57.) Her playing style is beautiful, it is a big loss for the game she retired. Her attitude is a different story... (When I met her in a park by chance she did not return my greetings, but this is understandable.)

My, how the bully wilts when the bully gets bullied.

Clever, thoughtful, talented player whose immaturity and arrogance, often out-shine her achievements. Near perfect year in '97 contributed to her increasingly cocky nature and at times, disrespect towards opponents. Complete melt-down against Graf at the the French stands out as the classic match which many will remember her by.

she doesn't belong on this list. she accomplished a lot in a "inbetween time" while the game awaited the next dominant players, but she ultimately didn't have it. Also, she's an awful role model, and a immature, poor sport.

Very solid player, especially mentally, but I always felt that she became #1 pretty much because Graf was injured so much. I was pretty much right on target because she didn't stay on top long.

You're right. Martina does need to change her attitude. She has softened too much. A champion needs fire, a killer instinct, desire, cockiness, and all of the things that make her dominant before the 1999 French Open. Suddenly, she has weakened, but the potential to be tough again is still there.

This is about pretty isn't it?

Certainly has a way to go before she can be considered one of the Greatest of all time but she's definitely a very strong player and besides how old is she like 18 or something? She has plenty of time.
Wiggum 05/15/2000
Yeah she's been semi-dominant for a while, but the idea of placing her alongside Martina, Steffi, Evert, and Billie Jean King is ridiculous at this stage in her career. First she needs to prove she can win big tournaments consistently over the years.

Martina Hingis is definetly one of the greatest female tennis players, she will be even better as she matures
