She also did not have Evert's drop shot or touch on the lob. I think that part of the reason she, Austin, fell to injuries so quickly is that she hit so hard for her time but in such a stif, mechanichal manner. Another interesting apsect of Austin's career in comparison's to Evert's is that Tracy lost much more often to those ranked lower than herself. Evert would go months if not a full year without losing to lesser players. Tracy did do well at the U.S. Open, but because she didn't have the fluidity for Wimbledon or the variety on her groundstroke for the French, her records there are not nearly so impressive.

 | rythymandbraun (0) 02/14/2005 | Tracy was a great player thank god ina time when it was needed. Her Wimbledon semi-final in 1980 against eventual winner Evonne Goolagong was a classic. Austin was not as self-absorbed as Evert who always made excuses when she lost a Wimbledon final like 'I was in love' or some other vain excuse. Navratilova was also a great champion who put Evert in her place as an 'Over achiever for her talentless boring game and overindulged personality' I remember Tracy winning the 79 US Open against Evert and thinking 'Thank god'.
Goolagong is Austin's hero and so she should be as Gong was a class act next to Evert who is a George Bush lover....(Really Martina what do you think of that?)Austin was a class act with a personality and it shows on and off the court. I hear Evert was quite cold to her. Greatness is NOT measured in Grand Slam Titles 'Chrissie' BUT on how the public remembers you. In this reckoning Tracy Austin was the best.

 | Underspin (24) 07/26/2003 | Classic match vs Navratilova in the '81 U.S. Open finals - great comeback. A bit mechanical to watch at times. Powerful groundstroker with a weak serve. Briefly #1 in the world.

 | trainshed terry (0) 03/13/2003 | I am a very dedecated fan of Tracy Austin, as I watchd her hit those outstanding ground strokes at the famous Devonshire Park in Eastboure (UK) for 4 years runing it sadden me on the last year that she played as I had got to know her game play to a tee. If Tracy body hand let her continue her career she would have been one of the world greatest players.
I can rember traveling home on the train from Eastbourne as I sat down I relized that Tracy was sitting in the seat oppsite to where i was reading a articale about her when she asked if she could read it, she duely did so while eating a apple, to which a little bit fell and landed on one of the pages and stained the page. I have happy memiors of watching Tracy on television.

 | Forrestkaadu (0) 03/09/2003 | Tracy was the first of the Chris Evert "clones", although she was not as sound technically in her stroke production. Besides Navratilova and Graf, Tracy remaians the only woman with a winning lead over Evert in head to head clashes. The lead was built in the late '70's but at the US open in 1980, Evert won easily 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and Tracy never beat Evert again. When Tracy attempted a comeback from injury in 1984, Evert creamed her 6-0, 6-0 and sent Tracy back into retirement. Overall, a good player, not a great one.

 | salvo7 (0) 01/14/2003 | When she was playing at 100%, Tracy was one of the 3 best players in the world and for brief periods, was the best. Time and again, it was Austin who prevented Chris and Martina from winning everything in site. Indeed, Austin has a winning record over Chris in head-to-head meetings and played Martina very tough.
Very few players could match her mental toughness and precision groundstrokes. If her body had cooperated, she would have won alot more than she did.

 | OCAM503OM (0) 10/29/1999 | Tracy Austin is a really great person. Her brother Jeff (former tennis pro) is also a good person. Tracy's sister in law Denise Austin is pretty cool too.
