 | Katrinabena (20) 08/01/2008 | I know there are bands with more talent, but I have always found these guys entertaining even when they were putting out cheesy stuff like Mr.Roboto.

 | sfalconer (22) 04/26/2007 | Styx was a Great band but with out Dennis they are a shadow of what they used to be. Let's not forget the Panzzo brothers. One of the best bands to come out of the 70's.

 | ILikePie (55) 03/22/2007 | Although it is more cool to bash them now, and I do confess I wouldn't like to be caught listening to the likes of 'Mr Roboto' (as catchy as it may be). But they are a very talented and indeed unique band, and they are certainly worth listening to.
All together now... "Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto"

 | Limpin' Trenchfoot (18) 07/27/2006 | Oscargamblesfro - i dismiss prog rock lock stock and barrell because it is all bombastic and pretentious cr@p. Nothing to do with Rolling Stone or John Lydon telling me to. I don't know which I loathe more - UK proggers like Yes, ELP, early Genesis, Gentle Giant and Marillion - or the US AOR versions like Kansas and Styx. Styx in particular have a brand of dullness tinged with a cloyingness that makes me squirm. Vile in extremis

 | CanadaSucks (50) 07/18/2006 | Styx represents much of what was wrong with overproduced, way-too-long, epic-wannabe songs of the 70's. . .

Styx is pretty bad. They always tried to be sound intelligent and failed miserably. Come Sail Away is good and it could have been much better without the silly organ solos designed to sound like a spaceship. The Paradise Theatre album was fairly decent. I will admit to owning it at a period in my life. The rest of this band's music is just pathetic! People still pay money to see these clowns.

 | Rockon64 (2) 05/26/2006 | "Grand Illusion" is a great concept album, which would classify them as prog rock, I suppose, even though I never thought of them in the same vein as Pink Floyd or Rush or Alan Parsons Project. I agree that some of their stuff was a bit pompous and trite, but overall I think their music rocked pretty hard. "Suite Madame Blue" is a great song, along with "Blue Collar Man".

 | JohnG (0) 04/02/2006 | A great band. Lots of people will crap all over them because it's cool to do so nowadays. They wrote and performed great pop/rock songs. What the hell is wrong with that? Good, catchy songs. Not the most depth, but if everyone tries to be Bono the world will be a pretty crapy place (it's crappy enough with one Bono). Come Sail Away, Renegade, Lady, Too Much Time On My Hands, I could go on and on. Everyone needs to lighten the hell up and stop judging music based on whether or not they think they're friends will think it's acceptable.

 | oscargamblesfro (81) 12/18/2005 | Good for a laugh only, the lead singer's lyrics are beyond trite, pompous, overblown garbage. Unlike a lot of people, I don't instantly dismiss all of progressive rock in a knee jerk, Rolling Stone magazine or Johnny Rotten told me to, it's not cool, repeat the party line, kind of way. At its best, it can be as good as any other subgenre of rock. However, when you mix progressive rock ( which indeed often does suck, I must admit) with bathos reeking pop, it's a recipe for disaster, and you wind up with utter tripe like this horse****.

 | Chipper (0) 01/19/2005 | Styx was a good band when founding member and leader Dennis Deyoung was in the band..Most of my favorite Styx songs were written and sung by him.The band that calls themselves Styx today is comprised of James Young,Tommy Shaw, and a group of two or three replacements. They hired some clown to take over the keyboards/vocals position to play the few Deyoung songs they still perform in concert. You can`t just replace the original master and just pretend like he never existed. That jerk James Young had the nerve to refer to Dennis Deyoung as their old keyboard player in a recent interview. Hey JY...hate to burst your bubble, but there`s a very good possibilty that you would still be an unknown musician from Chicago had Dennis Deyoung not been the driving force behind Styx.

 | BSUFan (0) 10/31/2004 | Holy crap, these guys get better with age! They've recorded tons of songs with many hits, and they still put on a great show! I've seen them in concert 5 times in the past four years and they put on an amazing show each time. I'm telling you, Tommy Shaw and James Young are two excellent musicians that love what they do and kick butt! Can't wait for the next tour.

 | ClassicTVFan47 (38) 07/08/2004 | With great songs like Come Sail Away, Mr. Roboto, and Lorelei, this group is one of the greatest. Their use of synth and extended chorus make their songs even better!

 | VirileVagabond (37) 04/02/2004 | I have to admit that Styx remains one of my guiltier musical pleasures. The group (named after the Greek mythical river that runs through Hades) formed in Chicago originally as a prog-rock band, and released four uneventful efforts (save for the single Lady) until Equinox in 1975 which was not only the last release with guitarist/vocalist/songwriter John Curulewski but also evidenced the transition period from prog to more mainstream rock. The subsequent Crystal Ball (1976) indicated that the group was immediately influenced by their new songwriter/vocalist/guitarist Tommy Shaw who has taken the band irretrievably towards the 1970's classic rock/pop sound. While Styx was a terrific singles band, true to their prog-rock origins they were essentially a full-length artist, so going with a compilation will probably result in the fan missing some of their better tracks, even by pop standards (eg Suite Madame Blue, Jennifer, Castle Walls, Queen Of Spades, Boat On The River, Borrowed Time, and Rockin' The Paradise). Nevertheless, Styx did not break any new ground or have any lasting influence on the rock genre to objectively merit more than three stars.

 | Guava Monkey (4) 03/25/2004 | Marginally less excruciating than the atrocious Kansas and in Tommy Shaw, they had one of the least inspiring musicians ever to strap on a guitar. For me, their only saving grace was that 'Babe' reminds me of my first lay.

 | troy666 (0) 11/05/2003 | What are these guys even doing on this list? Granted they have some songs that are fairly good, but one of the greatest bands of all time? Let's get real here.

 | Stygian (0) 07/26/2002 | Great band. Not too many people can start in 1972 and in 2002 manage to still have their concert in the top 50 concerts in the nation. They put on a great show, and still have great music to produce. New album due out in March 2003. Styx forever!

 | MClaxton (0) 05/06/2002 | STYX IS ANOTHER ONE OF MY FAVORITES. DENNIS DeYOUNG IS MY PERSONAL FAVORITE MEMBER OF STYX. I HAVE BEEN TO ONE OF THEIR CONCERTS LAST YEAR AND HAVE A COPY OF THE "RETURN TO PARADISE" CONCERT VIDEO. GREAT SONGS!!!

 | Terrky (0) 01/02/2002 | i was very impressed with styx. i mean, in a pretty short time, like 6 years, they had four triple platnum albums, and several #1 hits. they still give a great show too

 | Potch1214 (0) 10/26/2001 | One of my very favorite bands. I have almost all of their albums and think that their 1999 release, "Brave New World" is one of their strongest releases ever. I love their ability to cover so many aspects of rock and roll; ballads, rockers, oldies... I love the fact that fellow New Jerseyan Glen Burtnik is back, but I can't bring myself to see them without founder and keyboardist Dennis DeYoung (who wrote about 75% of their hits). I hope for the day when Tommy Shaw, JY and Dennis bury the hatchet.

 | MedgarEvers (15) 10/25/2001 | There's good theatrical rock (Elton John for example), and then there's Styx. I saw some show on E! that led viewers around the house of Styx's guitarist. It was so depressing. The guy has no life, just lives with his wife and does nothing all day long. And it's not like his band has a great history that he can look back on and smile.
