A good remake of the predecessors, this movie resembles more and more what our society is becoming.

So luminously dreadful it makes the first version look adequate.
edt4 11/29/2005
Again, I would have to agree wholeheartedly with Ocscargamblesfro. The only things this re-make had going for it were generally impressive make-up and special effects. It skirted cravenly away from the love angle between Wahlberg and the female ape, and the ending signified...what exactly? Burton certainly is talented, and there were some quality actors involved in the making of this film, but it was a definite misfire.
oscargamblesfr o 11/29/2005
Dreadful, cheesy and corny "remake" of the original, which was a minor classic, and whatever else it may have been, and it was pretty cheesy in its own right, the original was a fairly unique and influential landmark in the development of sci- fi films. The makeup was indeed very good, and Tim Roth did a good job as usual, but the rest of this movie was atrocious. The plot in particular was abysmal.
BugahaNE 11/24/2004
The special effects were the only saving grace to this film. Tim Burton did a great job on making the apes act realisticaly. This could have been a TV movie, it had none of the eerieness and surealism of the original. And why Mark Wahlberg continues to get movie roles is beyond me, he may be the worst, stiffest actor there has ever been.
Djahuti 11/16/2004
Atrocious acting.Stupid script. No amount of great special effects or hi-tech makeup jobs could salvage this heap of dung.SEE THE ORIGINAL!!!
jane33 07/18/2003
The original "planet of the apes" was pretty darn good!.. the new one ( tim burton), was HORRIBLE! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS TRASH. I wasnt that impressed with the ape costumes either, especially the female apes. The movie ( plot, actors) itself is unwatchable. I was shocked that a human actually made this crappy film.
marconej 07/01/2003
Stopped watching the video after just 30 minutes. Absolutely terrible - no character or story development. Save your money and see the original - which was original.
Redoedo 06/01/2003
As far as I am concerned, this movie was mediocre. I'm glad that I didn't waste my money by going to see it in the theater, and I finally saw it on HBO about a year after it came out. I had heard mixed reviews about it. I like this movie, but it is not without its faults. On the plus side, I thought that most of the actors did a great job, and the makeup artists did a wonderful job. There were a couple of humorous moments, but most of this film was fast-paced action. Great directing by Tim Burton. However, I found myself constantly annoyed by the obvious gaps in the plot (espescially at the ending) and, as much as I like Mark Whalburg, found him to be unbearable in this film. He just was not someone that I wanted to root for because practically he showed no emotion whatsoever in this film. In the final analysis, I wouldn't highly reccomend this film to anyone, but go see it as long as you know what you're in for.

Probably the worst movie I've ever seen !!!!
BIGBABY 03/22/2003
I liked this movie but it wasen't as good as I thought it would be. It expected more battle and more suspense. The costumes are great. I'm still trying to figure out the ending of it. I don't get it at all. This movie is at least watchable; but its only average.

Far away from the first one. the only thing thats the same as the first one is the monkeys.

Plenty of action, but poor character development and a lame ending weighs it down a bit.
hardcorechic 07/14/2002
two hours of mark whalberg is bad enough. two hours of mark, acting in a movie that was just fine the first time around was just too much.
AndyInAmerica 03/11/2002
heh, amazing...ly stupid. DONT SEE THIS MOVIE. you watch it for an hour and a half uninterested and you see the ending and want to commit suicide becuase it doesnt make any sense at all. DONT SEE THIS MOVIE.

The old version with Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell surpassed this peace. It was horrible. Get Real Hollywood, you cannot make the best of those past into better. You've proved it with this piece.

I give Planet Of The Apes(2001)five stars, it is one of the best sci-fiction filmS( next to Star Wars). It 's my favorite movie so far. The end of the movie may not make sense to some people, but it is still a good film and worth watching. My favorite part in the movie,is where General Thade (Tim Roth) looks right at Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg)and said " This one looked at me"..i loved that part. PLANET OF THE APES (2001)RULEZ!!!
POTA 11/28/2001
The best movie ever made in the history of movies along with the original and Star Wars. Unforgettable lines, twists, and characters fullfill this movie to its best.

i have always been a huge fan of Tim Burton, and while i must say this isn't his best piece of work....he makes up for it with Mark Wahlberg.....yummy!.....although some parts of the movie was kinda boring.....not a movie i would watch again

The ending was SUCH a dissappointment compared to the original! And the acting and characters were kind of weak. But I had such a good time going to see it anyway! I have mixed feelings. As a movie on it's own, Planet of the Apes 2001 was great, but compared with the original, it appears very mediocre. It's definitely fun though! And I kept on cracking jokes to my sister about that dumb blonde that Marky Mark falls in love (?) with! When he's leaving her to go fight the apes...."I will never forget you, Jessica!" I'm sorry if it's not funny now, but it was side-splitting when I first said it! :)
jbiscuit1 10/15/2001
This picture is illy adapted from its original and the book on which both are based. As with most time based Science Fiction, there are plot continuity problems. Mark Whalberg, who despite himself is actually a very good actor, does not reach his full potential in this movie, nor do the villians.
kyes 10/04/2001
the sets, props and costumes were indeed very good. but yeah, mark wahlberg's character was poorly written and especially disappointing considering he was the main character. there were some funny jokes n stuff, and of course the supporting human character had to be a blonde bombshell running around in a leather bikini. but then what threw me off the most was the ending. even my friend (who's sharper than me) didn't get it. we were going cross-eyed trying to figure out what exactly happened every time he got in his space-ship. i didn't find out what was going on until a friend of mine who read the original book told me.
CastleBee 09/28/2001
This action packed Sci-fi stuff is not my favorite movie genre, but I was compelled to see it due to the much-ballyhooed special effects and makeup. THAT should have been the first white flag. Yes, they really were great. It was the plot and story that lacked depth and much of the time seemed very cartoon-like. My biggest gripe was lack of any real character development. So, to sum up, this movie is really big on action, is a holiday for special effects buffs but easily managed not to burden its audience with interesting, deep or complicated dialogue. Overall - just a very expensive, flashy piece of fluff.
FrankEdkins 09/27/2001
I think this film was quite good for a variety of reasons: 1. This was a very creative re-imagining of the original story. I give director Tim Burton credit for going beyond the traditional manner in which re-makes are made, and putting a new spin on the tale. 2. The cast was excellent, especially Tim Roth and Helena Bonham Carter. Roth glowered like the best of villians, and Carter added plenty of nuance to her character. 3. The make-up was Oscar-winning, allowing for subtle facial expressions which increased the dramatic impact of the actors. 4. There was plenty of action, allot of very humorous moments, and it was thought provoking. Contrary to some opinion, there was a plot, a beginning, middle and end, and the points connected fine for the most part. You could quibble with a few *details* within the plot but, I take those with a grain of salt. I wanted to be entertained by this movie. If I want serious, I'll watch a documentary. I've already preordered the DVD, it might even be more enjoyable because it will have so many details about how this film was made. I'm particularly interested in all the behind-the-scenes details. So yes, I'd recommend this movie, its imaginative, good all-around fun. Look for Charlton Heston, you'll get a good laugh.

Planet of the Apes rocks! Lots of action, great story and incredible acting. I don't know what you all are talking about with th 3 star ratings. I was around for the first wave of Planet of the Apes, and this is so much better. Very realistic, great production. I cannot wait to get my hands on the DVD.
ArcaneMage 09/10/2001
The movie was great... up until the ending. The ending was HORRIBLE. No, to the person who asked, the ending hasn't been explained, it has the sci-fi community baffled. It just seemed like a sloppy add-on to bring in a sequel.
glorybox3 08/11/2001
Didn't like it. The costuming and make-up were amazing but that, along with Helena Bonham-Carter's performance, was the only thing really notable in this movie. Well, actually, the sets were pretty cool, but the storyline(or lack thereof) and poor performances kinda ruined everything for me. Mark Wahlburg had no defined character whatsoever. He just walked around trying to look macho(and failing.) The blond chick just walked around and looked pissed off. Kris Kristofferson(sp?)has like one line and then dies(not to spoil it for anyone)and Michael Clarke Duncan's character got little screen time(and what screen time he got was wasted with stupid ape screaming). Tim Roth was the most disapointing of them all. I loved this guy in Resevoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction and was expecting an electrifying performance. All I got was more of the same angry-ape-screaming. This movie should have a subtitle-Planet of the Apes-Angry ape screaming. (like the Phantom Menace..you know..anyway) Everyone just seems pissed off all of the time. Which In certain circumstances is understandable, but not all the freaking time. The whole monkey-marky-mad chick love triangle was just a mess, too. Does he like the monkey? Does he like the angry girl? Does he not like either of them? All in all, I would not recommend this movie. Go see the campy-yet-fun original. Charlton Heston's deliverance of "you damned dirty apes!" will give anyone a nice laugh.
Thorne 08/09/2001
Worth paying money to see. Planet of the Apes is not nearly what I would call a great Tim Burton film. It is however a well done sci-fi remake that has it's heart in the right place. Marky Mark once again drags his part through the mud and leaves us wishing someone with a little more acting ability had been cast that could have brought his character to life. Tim Roth and Helena Bonham Carter on the other hand truely are magnificent in bringing their characters to life. Charlton Heston and Tim Roth's scene in my opinion is one of the best moments in the film. THe best eye candy action picture of the summer.
danmuse 08/07/2001
I almost gave this film 4 stars, but now that I've had a few days to think about it, I'm a little disappointed. I'd call it "pretty good." Yes, of course, the special effects are cool, the ape make-up and effects especially, but it really doesn't have the fierce impact of the first "Planet of the Apes." It is not as shocking or as astute about what our culture has wrought. And frankly, Mark Wahlberg is unconvincing in the pivotal role of the leader that saves the day. Interesting development of the relationship between him and the ape played by Helena Bonham Carter (who does a very good job); too bad they felt obliged to throw in a good-looking model type to concede to the flesh factor. I'm glad I went to see it. It was fun. But it's not a great movie. Too bad.
eldritch_99 08/02/2001
This is a very entertaining movie. I did find that it was missing a lot of what made the original so interesting. It seemed to lack the satirical look at society and left out the comments of our ways of life. Replacing them with great effects and lots of fighting. It was a great movie though. I just have one question... Can anyone explain to me that ending?????
Lotus 08/02/2001
Because I don't intend to ruin the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, I will try not to go into much detail of what plot there was. When I heard that Tim Burton was doing the movie, I wasn't sure what to expect, because while I love some of his stuff, I hate some of his other movies. In truth, I don't think that this movie carried any of the dark tone that I've come to expect. While the movie was decently entertaining, it had some gaping holes in plot, especially at the end. The makeup and costumes were incredible-- The actors looked like real walking, talking (and how did they learn to speak English?) apes, which was very impressive. Most of the acting was decent, but it wasn't enough to make up for the lack of plot. The biggest thing that bothered me, though, was the fact that the ending leaves you feeling that there must be more-- but it never explains as much as even where he really is... As I said, it was decently entertaining, but don't go in expecting too much, because you will be disappointed.

I just got back from seeing this movie and I must say that I was impressed...MARK WAHLBERG was great!! He played the role of Leo Davidson perfectly! I read someone else's comment who said he couldn't act, but I have to ask " If he couldnt act why do you think he was chosen to have the lead role in the sequal of one of the best movies of all time?!?!?!?!" He was great! And the people who played the apes...my goodness they were excellent! I saw the making of this movie on HBO and geez they had to sit through hours of makeup... :(...and they had to practice runnin and walking like apes...it was crazy! although it paid off because everything they did was extrordinary. THe makeup artists deserve a lot of applause! It takes a very talented person to turn a human into and ape...hehe...All of the actors were great...I mean people should really respect this movie for all of the hard work that the people involved in this feature had to put up with...This movie had comedy, action, adventure, and a lil bit of fright...It was great wen Marky was makin his speech to the people..I even felt a chill run through me at that time...! I loved the voice of that scary ape...it was great wen he said "kill them all"..ooh i luved it...!! Although I luved it wen Mark said, "Don't send a monkey out to do a man's job."..or however it went...hehe..I liked it! The one part I didnt care that much for was the ending....It was not what I had in mind. Although it was surprising..It wasnt something I like for an ending(which kinda made it seem that there is goin ta be another sequal to it)...Over all the movie deserves some major Awards!!! Well I guess thats all I really wanna say so Im going to go but,Im not goin ta say it was better than the original because Ive never seen the movie..and I believe originals are alwayz the best so that is why I gave this movie 4 stars n not 5. But other than that I think it was very well done!
Munson 08/01/2001
I never saw the original and I think that contributed to me enjoying this film more than others. For me, it didn't have to live up to anything else. As everyone has said, the make-up and effects were absolutely unbelievable. That alone makes the movie worth seeing. And, I thought the acting and script were passable (particularly compared to Pearl Harbor, another big budget, great effects movie). Granted, the ending left you with a lot of questions (most importantly, what the hell happened?), but overall I would recommend it.
magellan 07/31/2001
To be fair, this movie deserves probably slightly higher than two stars, but does not deserve three. I was annoyed by the obvious holes in the plot (especially the endings), and thought the 2001 remake lacked much of the sophistication of the original. While the special effects were excellent, I would have gladly traded them for some decent acting and more compelling dialogue. I got the feeling that there were some really ambitious intentions that went into this movie, that somehow - either through bad acting, Hollywood pressures, or some combination of the two - gave in to becoming just another crappy movie with great special effects.
Wiggum 07/30/2001
After reading mixed reviews of this movie (CNN hated it, the San Francisco Chronicle loved it, USA Today liked it), I wasn't sure what to expect. And what I got was a mildly entertaining movie with some highlights and some clear weaknesses. The highlights include the ape makeup (especially on Tim Roth's General Thade character), the same elements of satire that marked the original "Planet of the Apes," and the acting of Helena Bonham Carter, who actually did a good job of creating a personality despite the handicap of acting through a thick layer of chimp face. The weaknesses include the difficult-to-believe ending, the uninspired plot, and the acting of Marky Mark Wahlberg, who I usually like. In this movie, for whatever reason, Marky Mark just seemed bland and difficult to root for. Overall I guess I walked out of the theater feeling like I hadn't wasted my $6, but if you decide to see this movie don't go in there expecting too much.
tchaikovsky2 07/30/2001
This movie was horrible. They took out all the interesting and freaky parts that were in the original. They seemed to be more interested in fighting scenes and chases than any of the subtle freaky parts that were in the first movie. The humans spoke English .. which I found weird. Mark Wahlberg . . .although may be nice to look at . . is a horrible actor. He was not convincing at all. . .especially in his "uplifting" speech to the humans! Save your money . . watch the original when it comes on TV again.
Shroomwoman 07/29/2001
I went to "Planet of the Apes" with my husband (a die-hard fan), and we were both disappointed in the movie. On the plus side, the costumes and make-up were fantastic. We couldn't believe how realistic the apes looked, even when speaking. However, the plot was nearly non-existent, and we never warmed up to any of the characters. Mark Wahlberg, who plays the lead, was unlikable in nearly every respect, and his performance was flat and uninspiring. There was a lot of unnecessary violence in the movie, too, which was a big turnoff for me (even my husband remarked on this). Finally, I was surprised to find myself feeling restless and bored in places. I think I checked my watch four times during different slow periods- not a good sign in an action-oriented movie! Don't waste your time on "Planet of the Apes," even when it comes out on video.
