Round abouts! 3

When they're doing major road reconstruction in my area lately they've been adding roundabouts.
They seem to work ok but I've seen many people drive up on the decorative cobblestone center section because the planners didn't put in curbs.

Surprisingly enough roundabouts are a quick way to move through an intersection, IF everyone knows what they are doing. Otherwise it's a mess, common curtisy is the way for a roundabout , unfortunately most people were I live, are not only in their own world but don’t seem to understand the word give way. ( or they do and they miss use the word. ) ;) I think that you could say they work but in certain places they won’t.

I think they're fun. I used to live near one, and it was never really a problem for me. now I live near a different one, which is much smaller in circumference and more congested which means it's tougher to negotiate. not nearly as fun!

Where they are common, people seem to get into groove and they run smoothly. There's only one in Winnipeg, in a new fancy riverfront condo development with a high proportion of seniors as residents. Drivers get into the loop, get befuddled and go around and around. They often park and stay in their cars until dark when the traffic thins out.

My only real problem with roundabouts is that they encourage aggressive driving. The busier, multi-lane ones in Europe are a mess. They do make traffic move faster than stop signs or stop lights though, so there is an advantage.

Roundabouts in the U.S., on the other hand, can be amusing. The average American has no clue how to drive in a roundabout, or who has the right of way (answer: whoever is aggressive enough to take it). There's a roundabout that's close to the fieldhouse where I go to play basketball, and you'll see people sitting near the entrance of the roundabout just waiting for their turn instead of taking it. People will sit there stopped for a couple minutes or more trying to figure out what to do.
