Pure NYC-hype: won grand total of 1 championship. And it's not as if he did it by himself either...defense held Colts to 7 points.

Overrated. He'll only be remembered for his performance in Super Bowl III.

Read Namath if you don't think much of Joe, and then decide. If anything he was underated. he basically was the force behind the AFL-NFL merger. He played with the knees of a 70 year old. One of the best!

Take out the Super Bowl year (for which he deserves praise) and the New York hype machine and you are left with nothing special.

Should of finished his carrer with the Jets.

He was a average Quarterback with a 500 winning record. But he had a awesome arm and was a great showman.

Among best and still a player worth studying and mentioning today.

If I were to ever meet Joe Namath face-to-face, he'd think that his worst tackle was like being rocked to sleep. I would love to toss a pass to him. That smile, the heat...got a cigarette? He can sack me anytime. db

Namath earned his place in NFL history by making (and backing up) his guarantee that the Jets would defeat the heavily favored Baltimore Colts in Superbowl III. But no one seems to remember that in the 9 seasons he played after that, he never won another truly important game. He was a good quarterback, but not a great one. He threw more interceptions (220) than touchdowns (173). But after SuperBowl III, no one seemed to notice his failings.

Blah blah blah. Guaranteed a victory, and through dumb luck actually pulled it off. That does not make him an all time great.

great QB- main reason for the merger of AFL and Nfl- legitamized the AFL overnight with super bowl III victory
