Dempsey was better. He brought in science, so what. Tyson would have destroyed him

Gene Tunney was probably the first modern heavyweight with a modern style. With his use of the jab, his movement and his ability to take a punch-as seen in his long count fight with Jack Dempsey, Tunney would be tough to beat for a Dempsey-style fighter any day.

when he fought dempsey the first time, he studied dempsey's style so VERY closely. dempsey always had trouble with boxers who could outbox him. his only loss wus to a dirty harry greb. greb won that fight because greb headbutted tunney and broke his nose. dammit, greb is as dirty as fritzie zivic! as for tunney, hes unfortunatly underrated and is one of the greatest tacticians ever to enter a boxing ring

Anyone who defeated "The Manassa Mauler"(Dempsey) twice has to get no less than 5 stars. He was an extremely smart and talented fighter.

One of the truly great heavyweight boxers. Never reached his peak, was smart enough to get out of boxing before he sold his soul to it like everybody else. How great was he as a heavweight, will never be measured. He only fought at a high level for a short time.

Gene Tunney was the GREATEST! He had intelligence, determination, and fortitude, as well as great boxing skills. He was never given the credit that he deserved. I hope that the general boxing fans learn about his true boxing greatness.

Great website for a great champion!

He was smart and extremely talented. He never received his just credit. His record was much more impressive than Jack Dempsey's record - and without all of the scandal of 'low blows' (Sharkey fight), rabbit punches (all of his opponents), hitting a man before he was even up off the floor (Firpo fight), being helped back into the ring (Firpo fight), using loaded gloves (Willard fight), refusing to fight the major contender (Harry Wills), taking a 3-year vacation during his championship and preventing others from getting a chance at the title, and on and on.

Everyone should view Gene Tunney's website at: http://www.genetunney.com/ to find out what an amazing fighter he was and read his brilliant analyses of other boxers like Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Harry Greb, Tommy Gibbons, and all of the other great boxers who fought Tunney.

Sentimentalists swear Tunney beat a washed up Dempsey, that he would have been clobbered had Dempsey been in his buck prime, But looking back at Dempsey's record we see he always had trouble with clever boxers: he lost to Fat Willie Meehan once, drew with him twice, then lost to him again! Miske and Tommy Gibbons both lasted the distance with him. Clever boxers were his bane. And none of these boxers were anywhere near the calibre of Gene Tunney. But Tunney gets no credit for bettering Dempsey. Considering how Louis struggled with Billy Conn, Tunney would have won that fight, and if Jimmy Young could beat, and drop, George Foreman then Tunney could have competed with Foreman, too. He was easily as strong as Young, as good a boxer, and he threw more leather. Even if we don't rate him at heavy he gets 5 stars as a lightheavy. He may have lost the first fight to Greb, but he beat him time and again subsequently. If Chris Byrd can compete as a modern heavy, so could Tunney, if wasn't so disappointingly dead.

A record second only to Marciano. A great thinker and tactician. All younger boxing fans should go and learn about this man before rating him. Beats Ali into third place in all time greats.
