This guy was really good, after all, he was the champion for about 7 years, even if he didn't always have the greatest competition, that's still impressive. What hurt him in the public's eyes was the fact that he was not the most likeable guy, nor was he entertaining or very quotable. Still, he was a very solid fighter for a long time, if not, historically speaking, at the very highest level of heavyweights.

holmes is the probably the greatest boxer of all time. some people say that he had little competition. that is because he dominated them.

He only looked like a great fighter because he fought in an era with no decent fighters. Not as good as everyone makes out. He would have been demolished by the greats (eg.Ali in his prime, Marciano and Foreman)Sorry but hes overrated! He also said that he could beat Ali in his prime and the only fighter in history that he would have trouble with would be Jack Johnson, somehow i dont agree.

power, technique, stamina, and heart. ppl dont say much about his chin, though. he took earnie shavers' best right hands and still KOd shavers twice. hes the measuring stick for today's heavyweight champion.

Good-but lost toMichael Spinks twice and looked terrible against Renaldo Snipes and Carl Williams.

Hard fighter to rate because of the lack of great fighers during his era. Belief it or not, has a lot in common with Marciano. No coincidence that Holmes threatened Marciano's record also fighting in a era of limited competition just like Rocky (which is why 49-0 doesn't carry as much weight with me as it does other people)? Prone to getting put on his butt like Marciano and in his prime always getting up. Also, had his toughest fight (in his prime) against a former light-heavyweight great. Based on talent and his physical advantages, have to rate Holmes in the top 5 or 6 of all time.

One of the greatest, like Kobe & Kareem (see Chamberlain) following The Greatest isn't easy. Top 10 heavy all time easy.

Would have rated him a 5 if he had retired instead of trying to break Maarcianos record.

Larry Holmes never fought any good apponents he's so over rated i wish Muhammad Ali would have kicked his but he was well past his prime.Back to Larry he only fought washed up fighters that were way past there prime.

Other than maybe Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis, this was the best heavyweight I've ever seen fight. His left jab was one of the hardest jabs in boxing, and I even saw him knock a guy down with it (Ossie Ocasio). He defended the heavyweight crown 19 times, and built up a record of 48-0 by beating guys like Ken Norton, Gerry Cooney, Tim Witherspoon, Mike Weaver, Earnie Shavers twice, and even a faded Muhammad Ali.

Anybody that says Holmes wasn't one of the all-time great does not know much about boxing. Although he did not have great opponents throughout his career, he dominated a seven year period in boxing history. Is is unfortunate his management avoided some of the top fighter of that period. His fight with Norton says everything you need to know about Holmes as a fighter.

Top Five heavy. Ruined Norton. Destroyed Shavers. Smart, strong, fast. Boring as all get out and never had a great rival but not for lack of trying... his first fight w/ Norton had all the earmarks of a treeeemendous series except for Holmes taking too much of Kenny with him.

SOOOOO underrated!!! Had 20 defenses (second only to Louis), and man, could he jab. Beat Spinks in the first fight, shouldve never fought after Tyson demolished him in 4 rounds (1988). in the Top 10 Heavyweights of all time

Probably the best jab in boxing history. Never should have fought Tyson, but as he said after the loss, he laughed all the way to the bank. Never really tested as no real competition was brought up against him during his prime. Then again, that was as much due to King's position as a promoter as anything else. After louis vs. Ali, Liston vs. Holmes would be the fantasy match I'd most like to see.

one of the most underrated heavyweights ever(although he fought at time when the heavyweight division was overshadowed by the middleweight and lightweight division.) however he probably would have been very competative againist the spinks's , shaver's, norton's and ali's of an earlier era. i'll never forget watching the incredibly hyped up bout with gerry cooney.(ahh those were the days ,before pay per view) should have retired after the micheal spinks fight very sad to see him trying to hang on and tarnishing a otherwise great status in boxing histroy.

Easily one of the most skilled fighters of all-time. In fact, he might be favored to beat any heavyweight in history. He was that good, especially his left jab(best hw jab of all-time). 20 defense is amazing, but lack of good competition or defining fight hurts his standings a bit on the al-time list.

Too bad there isnt a 3.5. Best jab I've ever seen in the heavyweight division. Wasnt a big heavyweight, but that jab could hurt anybody.

to some degree, a victim of his times in that the true measure of this man's talents will never be known. One thing is absolute, however: the best left jab in the heavyweight division in any era I'm familiar with. Has to be forgiven his indiscretions while on the brink of Marciano's record -- it can't be easy to feel history pass through your fingers ... and he's one helluva humanitarian who I think tried very hard to maintain the nobility of the title.

thank goodness we had a great champion following on from Ali - very underated, so sad he missed the record [unbeaten]. Wasn't that fast but SO STRONG!!!

Holmes was a layover between greats. He slipped in past an Ali who was washed up and out of shape, strode through a barren wasteland of untalented gladiators(like Tex Cobb, who wasn't really even a boxer, & Cooney...the great white dope), finally falling before a vicious fury named Mike Tyson. Would he have been as dominant with any kind of competition? Who knows, I sure don't.

Without a true rival during his career, Larry Holmes can never be included with the greatest heavyweights of all-time (Ali, Frazier, Marciano, Louis). He never had that career-defining fight that all of the other greats had. He also tarnished his career during his comeback when he tried to model himself after George Foreman, but instead came across as a fool. All of that being said, Holmes held the title and was undefeated for a long time, both difficult feats.

Holmes, Tremendous heart, excellent boxing skills (best left jab ever) and stamina! Underrated power in right hand and uppercut!

The first fight I ever remember watching was Larry Holmes against a big white guy named Tex Cobb. I don't remember much except that Holmes beat Cobb to a bloody pulp, round after round, yet Cobb would not go down. I remember my mom getting all pissed at my dad for letting me watch it, because it was so, so brutal - and the guy would JUST NOT GO DOWN. Looking back, my guess is that Holmes was already starting to lose a step - and as it turned out, he stuck around and stuck around until his reputation as a fighter became not nearly what it should have been

Poor Larry Holmes... almost reached Marciano's mark of 49-0 and then he blows it all, and now tours the "senior circuit" as a has-been. Sad that he reigned during a period of little competition in boxing.
