 | Oldtimeboxing (0) 03/20/2007 | It's funny when everyone talks about how old Louis, Walcott, and Moore
were when Marciano fought them, like it was Marciano's fault they were
older. The Rock fought who was there. I like to add I am a fan of Ali
and think he was one of the greatest heavy weights. However, no one
talks about some of his opponents old age, for example, Moore had 26
yrs on Ali, Patterson was 7 yrs older, Cooper was 8 yrs older, Clevland
Williams was 7 yrs older, and Liston born in 1932 was 10 yrs older than
Ali!. I believe Ali or a Louis could of possibly beat Marciano, but
Marciano could of possibly beat then also. With these 3 great fighters
anything is possible.

 | Randyman (104) 02/22/2007 | It's probably not fair to rate one boxer against another boxer from another era, but it's something all fight fans do, and we almost always favor the fighter that was in their prime when we were reaching our prime, and we are all biased in one way or another, be it style, personality, weight class or race. I am admittedly, one of the guiltiest.
I think Rocky Marciano was a hell of a fighter, and he dominated the heavies during his reign as champion, and retired as the only undefeated heavyweight champion in history. As far as heart goes there is no one in boxing history that has surpassed Marciano. That much is beyond dispute. What is in dispute is wheather he was the best heavy ever. I don't think so. Was he better than Muhhammad Ali? In my opinion, no. Would he have given Ali problems, sure he would have, but in the end Ali would have been too much for him. Marciano was a plodder that averaged 189lbs, and would not have had the ability to hit Ali, who averaged 230 lbs, the way he did an old Joe Louis, or Jersey Joe Walcott, who were both years past their primes when he fought them, as were most of the more recognizable names that he fought. I'm not trying to take anything away from Rocky, but I am trying to compare what he did, versus what Ali accomplished. The fighters that Ali beat were in their primes when he did so. He beat Sonny Liston (twice), Joe Frazier (three times)and George Foreman when they were in their primes, both Liston and Foreman were champions when Ali beat them. He beat Ken Norton (twice), Ernie Shavers, Ron Lyle, tough as nails Jerry Quarry (there were none tougher), Light heavy champ Bob Foster, Cleveland Williams and several other good, if not great fighters. Look at the list of fighters on his record and tell me Ali could not take a punch. He did all this while not being allowed to fight during his prime years. Whether you like Ali or hate him, you have to give him his just due.
As for Ali being punch drunk. Not true. I have seen several punch drunk and near punch drunk fighters up close, including Jerry and Mike Quarry. Whatever else is wrong with Ali his mind is a sharp as a tack. Correction: Ali Fought Frazier three times, he beat him twice. My bad!

 | Peter45 (0) 02/22/2007 | How can Muhommed Ali be the 'greatest' (his own title of himself), when he was defeated several times? Several of his fights were suspect, to say the least. He was NOT a one-punch fighter, and was not renowned for TAKING a puch, something that ALL great fighters were able to do. When he defeated Brian London (something of a bum on the world stage), Ali had to hit him goodness how many times in order to put him down. Contrast this with Sonny Liston, one of the hardest fighters EVER to step into the ring); Ali brushed Liston's cheek with a 'featherduster'and knocked him out!!! I am not doubting Ali's speed of combination punching, or his fleet of foot, but a GREAT fighter? Never.
Therehas not been a GREAT fighter (with the exception of Marciano) since the War, the ability to stand toe to toe and trade vicious punches is the hallmark of a GREAT fighter. To conclude, Ali's Parkinsons (although sad)is really a euphemism for punch drunk; he took so many punches to the head during his career that he was left a shambling wreck - so much for the GREATEST! My two GREATEST are: Joe Louis, a devasting puncher and undefeated WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP FOR TWELVE YEARS (against some of the greatest fighters in history). And Rocky Marciano, another devasting hitter with a knock-out punch in BOTH HANDS, and NEVER defeated.
I could name several fighters greater than Ali, in addition to the above named. I have never been 'blinded' by the hype and self adulation that Ali spouted, I have always been, and always will be, 'suspicious' of him and his record.

 | GenghisTheHun (171) 01/30/2007 | The Brockton Rock is king! I watched him on television in the 1950's. He came in low in a crouch, but he was great on the fundamentals.
His record was 49-0 with 43 knockouts, and Rocky was always ready to defend the title. We had lots of boxing on television in those days and it was great. Today you couldn't show it.
Rocky was 1 day short of being 46 years old when he died in an airplane crash.
In 1969, shortly before his death, Marciano participated in the filming of the fantasy, "The Superfight: Marciano vs. Ali." The two boxers were filmed sparring, then the film was edited to match a computer simulation of a hypothetical fight between them, each in their prime. The bout was aired on January 20, 1970. Marciano won by TKO in 13.
Ali shot off his mouth about it, but most of the boxing experts at that time agreed with the outcome.

He was the best pound per pound of all of the heavyweights. Not as pretty as Muhammed Ali but HE ALWAYS GOT THE JOB DONE! Rocky has always been a special inspiration for me. | patrick.bresnahan (0) 05/17/2006 | Wow, apparently millikentiger isn't very good at decoding the English Language because I clearly stated that it wasn't a sparring match which is why I posted it, it was a fake boxing match. You know like what you have probably seen on TV, maybe Rocky, I'm sorry didn't mean to burst your bubble by telling you that the Rocky movies are fake. If you believe that Rocky Marciano would have beaten Ali then you probably thought that Rocky movies were real. Anyway as I thoroughly explained in the previous post, it wasn't a sparring match and how do you think it would have looked to the media who was already coming down on Ali if he would have beaten the piss out of Marciano at the age of 46, yeah probably wouldn't have looked so good. Anyway you may want to read the post absorb it, try to process it through your tiny brain and then attempt to write something that doesn't make you look like a complete jackass. Finally for my rating, again a 4, good fighter, benefit of a down period in boxing, not the best ever.

 | lordbaltimore (0) 05/15/2006 | Some of you need a little more education about Marciano. Marciano's strengths were due to the exceedingly rare combination of an incredible chin and great punching power, not to mention his endurance and tenacity were even greater than Frazier's and I love Joe Frazier. They both had the
maximum of heart.
Marciano definitely had a better chin than Frazier, and Marciano could take guys out with the left
or the right. Frazier's had a great left, but almost no right at all.
Marciano was a freak of nature, a once in a century kind of fighter that would eventually test your
body and your chin.
Okay, the slickest boxers were a challenge to Rocky, well, well, well, uh, they are a challenge for
every fighter, just look at Tyson's struggle against journeyman James Quick Tillis. Look at Ali
against a powder puff Jimmy Young.
If you think Ali would not have trouble with Marciano, just watch Ali backing up and still get
tagged against a slow George Chuvalo (Chuvalo also had a great chin, but Marciano was quicker and
punched much harder and much more often than George Chuvalo)
Chuvalo was able to hit Ali with a bunch of solid punches in that fight and so would Rocky, and the
Rock could really punch.
Marciano always came to fight and did what he had to do to win in any fight. Rocky took LaStarza out
easily in the rematch and LaStarza said Rocky had greatly improved since their first fight decision.
Rocky learned on the job, because he had almost no amateur experience, a total of 5 amateur fights
before turning pro. He didn't have a boxing coach before he turned pro and even for a while in his
pro career. After getting extremely tired in his first amateur fight, he vowed to never fight again
unless he was in shape. True to his word he worked out like a maniac the rest of his career. He had
incredible conditioning, maybe the best stamina ever.
Early in his pro career, Silverman repeatedly matched him with men who had big punches and much more
experience so that Marciano would lose, and he KOed every one of them because even without
experience he could wade through their best punches and nail them with either hand. He punched so
hard that his hands were injured many times in his career.
If you fought Marciano, the odds are that everyone would find out if you had a chin, a body,
recuperative power and a heart. You would definitely have to earn it, he came to fight.
Could he beat Johnson, Dempsey, Louis, Ali in their primes, who knows? Ali could not have hurt
Marciano or even slowed him down, but he may have turned it into a track meet and won, or he may
have gotten hurt, as in Frazier and Henry Cooper, (those weren't just flash knockdowns, Ali was hurt
bad).
A note on Sonny Liston. Sonny sure did not like to get hit. The few fights that he got hit, he
struggled. He would have quit against Marciano. old Leotis Martin knocked Sonny out cold as a
cucumber with a single left.
I rank Joe Louis as the best Heavy ever, Ray Robinson as the best fighter ever, but the way fighters
match up makes for drama. No one fighter would have an easy go, the great ones rise to the occasion,
but you better have a great chin, great conditioning and a ton of heart.

 | frederrj (0) 05/11/2006 | Gentlemen Gentlemen, undoutably Rocky Marciano was one of the greatest boxers of all time with his 49 fights undefeated, but let me share my opinion on this matter. The best boxer in of all time will be no doubt, SUGAR RAY ROBINSON.That man lost his first fight in 134 fights, that is almost tripple what Marciano did. Marciano was a very great boxer if not, i would say second best of all time, know one can strip Robinson for what he did, 200 fights 6 draws 19 loss 173 wins and 108 KO that will never be done again in the history of boxing, no one can strip that from him, he is the best and will always be the best

 | millikentiger (0) 04/25/2006 | To Patrick.Bresnahan, A Little advice, as a boxer myself let me tell you something, there really is no such thing as a sparring match when you get two champions in the ring, if muhammad ali was bothered by Marciano hitting him too hard, he would have stopped him with his fist's, ali was 29, Marciano was 46?,Marciano did train for this sparring match, and was not going to get Embarrassed, and he didn't, He was ready to fight, Ali was knocked down by light hitting Henry Cooper 175 lbs.and would not have answered the bell if not for the cut glove, but still was talking like he was the greatest the next day, Watch how fighters punch Patrick, that will tell you something, watch their leverage, nobody had leverage like Marciano, that is why he never lost, and that is why Ali couldn't stop him in sparring, because he couldn't. If Ali could have hurt Marciano while they sparred believe me, he would have,Ali fooled the people in believing he was the greatest, he could have never stood up to the relentless punching power of Marciano, I dont care how fast you say he was, fine, then How did Cooper connect, Ali was hurt in so many fights, even when he was young and faster, You can run, but you can't hide! Marciano by Knockout, but I would have to give my vote to Sugar Ray Robinson as the greatest Pound for Pound

 | orangeandrea3 (0) 01/09/2006 | Rocky Marciano was the greatest boxer of all time because of many reasons here are a few: He is the only undeafeated champion in the history of gloved boxing, and considering how many there has been somewhat 300 thats a accomplishment in its self, his record is the proudest in boxing history 49/0/0 (43 Knockouts) although he didn't have many fights nearly all of them were fantastic and highly entertaining, the kind of fights that a boxer usally only gets once in their entire career so with Rocky and his career you got tones of quality and a not so bad quantity level really, I mean think about it what would you rather have 150 fights that are so bloody boring you'd fall asleep or 49 action packed fights that keep you on the edge of your seat all the way through, I know which one i'de choose. Also I would like to comment on another review on Rocky Marciano (Look you will know which one I mean) Rocky took on every one who was a challenge during his time and they wern't rubbish ok compared to him yes maybe, because he was that tallented, also he would take on any boxer of any time and win. Anyway he took on the greatest of his time and thrashed them all these include: Jersy Joe Walcot, Joe Lousis, Ezzard Charles and Rex Layne and all of them were good boxer's especially Joe Lousis, he Rocky's hero and Rocky knocked him out and ended Joe's career after that fight. So igore that person (Idiot) sorry but he doesn't now much about Rocky Marciano. Rocky was the very best of boxing because he had what boxers very rarely have today, loads of heart. He had tremendous heart, determination and the best granite chin ever also he was the heaviest hiter ever (Jack Dempsey takes Second place for that) Infact the right hand that Rocky koed Jersy Joe Walcot with to win the heavyweight title of the world is argubally the single most devastating punch in the history of boxing. So there you have it Rocky Marciano is the greatest ever oh by the way you know those people who say Muhammad Ali is the greatest boxer ever well listen to this their was a Miami promoter who asked both Muhammad and Rocky would they have a fight and put their statistics into a computer and the ending result was decided by that. Anyway rocky was 46 and Muhammad was about 27-34 so they started traing and Muhammad didn't do much mind you he only wanted the money because he'd been stripped of his title by the way this was done in 1969 anyway Rocky himself trained the same if not harder as if it was a proper fight because he wanted to be sure if something went wrong and the punches became real he would be ready to fight and win. So when the time came and the fight stated Rocky had shed nearly 50 pounds and seemed a lot fitter and healthy than the younger champion. So as the fight went on Rocky obiously was a lot older and needed a wig to rplace his balding head and during the fight Muhammad threw a high punch and knocked the wig off and they had to stop the filming to refit the wig and some filming grew were sniggering (Pr**ks) and Rocky felt ammbarest and angry and he said he did that on purpose, he has no respect for me but every thing started again and he knocked it off again and Rocky was really angry and kicked off but Muhammad appoligised and the filming commenced and he did it again and Rocky really did flip this time he gave Muhammad one really heavy body blow and it knocked Muhammad Ali to the floor and Muhammah Ali was helpless! They got sepperated and Rocky took to his changing room to calm down, well a body blow off a 46 year old man knocked the so called greatest boxer ever to the ground and he was helpless think about that when people say Muhammad Ali us the greatest ok. So Rocky then offerd Muhammad Ali a real fight but Muhammad refused and I wonder why a young 27 year old boxer turning down a 46 year old boxers challenge of a real fight I know because Rocky Marciano would have batterd him into the caverns, so Muhammad appoligised and Rocky let it go, Muhammad even said to the promter after Rocky knocked him down that he wants more money or he's not continuing and the promoter did give the extra money and this is all true becase the promoter even said it was true once. So from then on Muhammad had a diferent attitude throughout filming and at the end Rocky and Muhammad were friends and they respected each other well. So the result that the computer came up with was Rocky KO'S Muhammad in the 13th round just like he did to Jersy Joe Walcot all those years ago. And the computer wasn't tamperd with even Muhammad Ali's manager said that the computer came out with a very accriate result and nobody tamperd with the computer. So there you have it I hope you now relise who the greatest boxer of all time is, ROCKY MARCIANO!!!!!!!

 | nick_thegreat (0) 12/12/2005 | Rocky Marciano has the highest fight to KO ratio in history. Marciano may not have had the boxing finesse as many great fighters, but when a man is indestructible why slip a punch when u simply hit him back harder. Marciano would swarm u, take anything u got and batter u. No man hit harder or had a chin like Marciano, the only ever underfeated record is a testament to his ability.

 | Harry_Greb (0) 10/29/2005 | Once again, I have to score a great fighter lower than I normally would because he is ranked too high on this site. Marciano was undoubtedly one of the elite heavyweight champions of all time. He is not, however, the best pound for pound. That honor goes to Sugar Ray Robinson and anyone who doubts that should go rank golf or ping pong. I believe that the 3 primary categories determining greatness are as follows
1. Technical ability
2. Warrior's heart
3. Athleticism
Rocco was woefully deficient in terms of technical ability but you have to give him his due --for a short-armed small man built like a baseball catcher, he maximized his potential. He knew he would never in a millenium outbox the Walcotts, Charleses, and Moores of the world so he got himself into superhuman condition and relied on his never-say-die heart (2) and his freakish punching power (3) to overcome his more talented opponents. He had little speed, but he would whack the arms and every other part of the torso and break men down. He could not be stopped --almost like a Jason Voorhees in the ring. That, my friends, is the scariest kind of opponent. Rocco would go down and get up STRONGER. To stop him? Get a gun.

 | JOHNNIE BOY (0) 10/02/2004 | HEARD GREAT THINGS OF FIGHTERS FROM MANY YEARS AGO, AND I KNOW THIS ROCKY IS THE TRUE ROCKY HE STARTED-IT ALL. FOR THOSE WHO SAY THAT ROCKY WAS A NOBODY; THEY BETTER THINK TWICE! IGNORANCE IS WHAT THOSE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE POSSES. WHEN THEY LEARN AND SEE REAL FIGHTERS FIGHT, THATS WHEN THEY CAN OPINIONATE IN REGARDS OF ROCKY.
