 | DjHubRoc (0) 06/20/2007 | Ray Robinson was as close to perfect as there has ever been. Speed of a welterweight and the power of a heavyweight. Ask alot of the old time trainers and fighters and 95% will say his name among the top 3 All-Time.

 | hithere311 (0) 03/19/2007 | rated number one in Ring Magazine's list of the 80 Best Fighters of the Last 80 Years. Ali came in 3rd. most people just say ali is the greatest because he was a heavyweight and heavyweights have always gotten the most attention

 | coxscorner (1) 08/27/2006 | Robinson p4p easily among the 3 greayest fighters ever and arguably the best ever. The "original" Sugar Ray could do it all, he had grace, speed, balance, 2 handed power, an iron chin (never physically knocked out in over 200 fights). Peak record of 128-1-2. Was unbeatable for a period of more than 8 years. There was nothing that he could not do.

 | frederrj (0) 05/11/2006 | It seems to be that there are some clowns here that think they know a thing or two about boxing, but really guys you are just speaking out of your ass.Let me elaberate, SUGAR RAY ROBINSON, best boxer of all time, there will never ever be a boxer better than him, check the stats, he is the only fighter to be undefeated in 133 fights, who else done that, Huh, thought so, no one else, No doubt Rocky Marciano was world class, and i would rate him second best boxer of all time with his 49 fights undefeated 43 KO that is brilliant, but if that is brilliant, what do you call 133 fights undefeated
Or should i say 200 fights 19 loss 6 draws 173 wins and 108 KO's, that will never repeat itself in all of boxing history. No one can strip him of that, you try knocking out 108 masters of the ring. And for that other clown who said Sugar Ray is a Ape, Your mother is a Ape.

 | Kelticman (10) 12/06/2005 | Jake La Motta (raging bull) said that Sugar Ray Robinson was by far the best boxer he ever faced. I, along with many boxing journalists and ex-fighters, consider Robinson to be pound for pound the greatest fighter to have stepped into a ring. Muhammad Ali said Sugar Ray was his all time boxing hero, and freely admitted that he based his boxing style on his. Ali once said that no matter how good a boxer he (Ali) became, he could never be better than Sugar Ray Robinson. The ultimate accolade.

 | bmf940 (0) 08/07/2005 | Sugar Ray Robinson defined the essence of the sweet science; as the nickname Sugar Ray says. The best fighter of all time period. He had the best ring savy, outsmarted opponents, and was the best at adapting to the style of his opponents. He also possessed the best skills of any fighter, he had the power, the speed, the agility, and the heart. His record of 173 wins, 19 losses, 6 draws and 108 Ko's, speaks volumes about the greatness of Sugar Ray. In his prime he would've easily handled the great middleweights of the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's to today's stars. Many fighters including the great Muhammad Ali consider him the greatest fighter pound for pound, which really says the most about Sugar Ray. A shame on how his life ended in destitution, a man of his stature deserved a more fitting ending.

 | irishgit (156) 06/16/2005 | A great fighter, and a class act. Have only seen film of his fights, but reading the comments of several opponents it is clear that this was a fearsome combatant. Pound for pound, one of the best ever.

 | tvlachos (0) 03/25/2005 | Without a doubt, the greatest fighter in the ring, all time. He had no weaknesses, outboxed all boxers, outpunched all punchers, best defensive fighter, the best world class and champion opponents. He has no peer

 | Harry_Greb (0) 02/28/2005 | Anyone who knows anything about the Sweet Science will agree that he is the greatest fighter who ever walked the planet. He was a boxer/puncher with speed, accuracy, a granite chin, lights out power, finesse, great defense, experience, and an unbelievable list of conquests (Armstrong, Gavilan, LaMotta, Basilio, to name a few). Ali worshiped and emulated him (right down to the color of his trunks) and admitted the superiority of Sugar Ray. Those of you who call Sugar Ray Robinson a bum or are so ignorant as to compare heavyweights to welterweights are suffering from acute pugilistica dementia --oh wait, that would mean thay they actually got in the ring and have an informed opinion, so never mind.
They should add new category to this entitled Legendary just for him.

 | wildhawke11 (0) 01/06/2005 | I cant believe some of the remarks such as Marciano or Tyson would have beat Ray.
Robinson was a middleweight at most,
Ali himself said i am the greatest HW but ok Robinson was better P4P.
Robinson is the clear No 1 WW and in the Top 3 at MW.
Most expert historians regard Robinson as the best P4P ever.

 | Montrose (0) 10/09/2004 | Robinson was a welterweight and middleweight and should not be compared head-to-head with heavyweights, but p4p he was elite. Over-rated? His prime record was 128-1-2. In his career he fought 18 world champions when there was only one champion in each division. He defeated 10 Hall of Famers. He had more career knockouts than any active champion has fights (109). 'Nuff said.

 | callitdowntheline75 (75) 09/05/2004 | Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest ever. Who can compare to him? He had the speed, power, and grace- all in a single package. And watching him fight other greats such as Henry Armstrong and Rocky Graziano illustrated his willingness to fight anyone, anytime. His signature fights with Jake LaMotta, however, solidified his place as the greatest fighter of all-time, as the 'Sugar Man' sliced and diced the 'Raging Bull' with the surgical finesse of a matador. His only vulnerability came when he, alone, lost to the heat against a thoroughly outclassed (and outpunched) Joey Maxim. No one could have beaten Sugar Ray Robinson- pound for pound- ever!

 | StevePI (0) 08/11/2004 | I like to give reviews with a little substance. Sugar Ray (the original) was the greatest ever in his sport. There is nothing more that I can add to what has already been said, except if if you don't believe it check out some of the old films.

 | Randyman (114) 07/19/2004 | I was lucky enough to have met this great man in 1976, he was an old man but he still worked out at the Main Street Gym in L.A. and could still move. He actually took the time to show me what I was doing wrong with my right hand. Generally regarded as pound for pound the greatest champion of all time. Hard to argue with that. But I do it anyways (sacreligious , I know). I have Duran on par or slightly ahead. Most don't agree but that's my opinion. But that doesn't change how I feel about the original Sugar Ray. He was a great fighter in the ring and a class act in and out of it.

 | Mistachill (0) 07/07/2004 | Ray Robinson (as a welterweight) pound for pound is the greatest fighter who ever lived. I believe his record as a welterweight was something like 86-1. He wasn't AS great as a middleweight, though he's probably remembered more for his battles in that weight class.
He was the total package!

 | guilalah (0) 08/09/2003 | Long career of competitive excellence, and extreme dominance at welterweight. Fast, but also effective because he was always thinking a couple moves ahead of his opponent. Tremendous sense of space. Great chin, only stoppage due to heat postration in bid to win lightheavyweight title. Fine puncher, good combinations. Could go to the body when needed; this helped turn the fight both in his challenge of LaMotta, and also his fight against Bobo Olson that went the distance. Hard to anticipate where his left would land, as he would sometimes begin hooks both to the head and the body from the same starting point. Five stars; if this were a 1-to-10 system, he'd get a ten.

 | Marcellus (0) 02/15/2003 | Regarding rightwing's stupid racial comment, the only guy who beat Sugar Ray in his prime was Lamotta. Forgetting the loss to Tiger Jones, due to rust, Sugar Ray had 3 losses in the 1950's: Turpin, Fulmer, and Basilio (2 white guys). So this is a stupid, ignorant statement. By the way, Roy Jones Jr. is ducking Darius Michalewski and
and Lennox Lesis is ducking Vladimir (not Vitalo) Klitschko. So take you racial stupidity and shove it.

 | alrightjim (0) 12/13/2002 | In terms of both skill and accomplishment no fighter rates higher than Ray Robinson. No fighter had more ways to beat you, no fighter had bigger heart. And he retained these magnificent tools well into his thirties. He was not unbeatable, no fighter is unbeatable. He had weaknesses. His chin was only average, he had off nights, nights when a hungry, unorthodox fighter could outhustle him, and he ducked Charley Burley. I personally don't think any fighter gets the better of Burley in his prime. But whatever kept Burley from accomplishment; there was no what if when it came to winning titles and making history for Robinson. The counter left hook that coldcocked Gene Fullmer is the most perfect punch in boxing history. And that was Sugar Ray's greatest skill, he had a magic club in his golfbag no competitor could wield, and he often used it when he needed it most.
