A true ATG fighter with a devastating right hand, left hook to the body and a poleaxe of a jab. Widely known as one of the best P4P punchers of all-time but he was also never outboxed by anyone and that includes Sugar Ray leoanrd and Wilfredo Benetiz. His only weakness was his average chin and stamina, which let him down against Leonard and Hagler. IMO only Julian Jackson challenges him for the best P4P puncher of all time.

A great middleweight although shaded by Hagler, Leonard and Duran. His bouts with Hagler are among the great fights of all time

A great fighter, a great heart , a great puncher and a glass jaw. Too bad he couldn't beat Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Iran Barkley.

Thomas Hearns was undoubtedly the most exciting fighter of the 80s and absolutely an all-time great. There's no shame in losing gallantly to the second greatest welterweight of all-time (Leonard) and the greatest middleweight of all time (Hagler). How about the fact that Tommy destroyed Pipino Cuevas, a champion for five years who had never even been rocked, much less floored. Hearns crushed his great chin in two rounds. He outboxed a master boxer, Wilfred benitez. He pulverized Roberto Duran in two rounds. Consider this: before Hearns, Duran was only knocked down twice, bot briefly, in 81 fights. In more than 40 fights after Heanrs, he was never floored. Against Herns, he went down three times in two rounds and was knocked pretty much cold. Let's not even get into the second Leonrd fight. If Tommy were a middleweight in the 90s or now, Jones and Hopkins would both be after thought. If he were a welter or jr. middle, Trinidad and especially De La Hoya would be mincemeat. Tommy had the ability to box, punch and go to the body. Even in defeat to Iran Barkley, The Blade had to go through hell and needed plastic surgery courtesy of Tommy's thunder.

If you survived the first two or three rounds with him, you had a shot to beat him, even when he had big physical advantages.

Hard guy to rate. Below Leonard and Hagler. Never dominated a division the way Duran did. Has some quality victories on his resume (Cuevas, Duran, Benitez) but lost his biggest fights (Leonard & Hagler). Great punch, weak chin. Underrated boxer, maybe slightly overrated heart.

his right cross was definatly the single best punch in the welterweight division ever. not only could he punch, he could box. versatility is something thats very rare but highly treasured in boxing. he overtrained or undertrained too much and didnt retire when the time was right. along with his punch, his technique was impressive and his heart was that of a champion. he KOd roberto duran in two rounds. the KO punch was a right hand that even joe louis could envy and duran was out before he hit the canvas. about his jaw: it wasnt glass weak, but his jaw was softer than average. and it wasnt his chin that got him three rounds in the hagler fight, it was his heart. solid puncher, great technique, huge heart, and he KOd duran. but he had a training problem, sort of weak chin, and lost to the best fighters of his day (i.e. hagler and leonard). hes alot better than most people think.

Tommy didn't have a great chin, I can live with that, but I never saw him getting blown away. If he got tagged properly he stayed with who he was fighting, they never put him down instantly, they still had to fight for it. The night he knockd Duran out no-one could have lived with him. He'd have beaten Leonard, Hagler et al easily that night. He could box, he could fight and he could punch, all he needed was a better chin and he could have been the greatest ever but in my opinion he really was an exceptional fighter.

well if he had a glass jaw like you all say, being the first fighter to ever knock out roberto duran was a pretty good achievement, and he knocked him out in the second round, i think you guys better get your facts right on who had the glass jaw.

The absolute original GLASS JAW of Boxing , Hearns was never a great fighter. He was a fighter with great advantages. These advantages being his height and reach helped alot. I think he was robbed in both Ray Leonard fights. If you watch very carefully in his first Leonard fight , the ref jumps in and stops the fight the very second that Hearns gets into trouble. The ref never ever gives Hearns a chance to regroup he just jumps in and ends the fight. The second Leonard fight was even more obvious that Hearns won when he knocked Leonard down two times and was only awarded a draw.

Having him to fight helped to elevate the greatest of his era. Hearns was an explosive, yet somewhat undisciplined fighter who looked really dangerous until you got a solid knock on that chin of his...then it was lights out.

Fun to watch, but his glass jaw kept him from being among the elite.

The Hit Man was a very good fighter when compared with his peers. However, in terms of all-time greats, he isn't nearly the level as the others. While he fought in two of the best fights of the 80s (against Hagler and the first one against Leonard), he didn't win either one and got knocked out in both. Sure, he had a good punching power, but his footwork was never great and that hurt him a great deal against top competition.
