 | Randyman (114) 07/19/2004 | No rating of Holyfield can ever be given without mentioning Mike Tyson. In much the same way as Ali and Frasier are always compared and discussed. Credit is usualy given to Mike Tyson as the dominant heavyweight of his time. Nothing could be further from the truth. The 90's belong to one man. Evander Holyfield, The Real Deal, fought the best fighters of his day, Riddick Bowe (three times, losing twice) Ray Mercer, Michael Moorer, Bert Cooper, George Forman and many others. Even past his prime, gave a much better showing against Lennox Lewis. Tyson made his living dodging the real boxers of his day, pre and post Buster Douglas. To be sure, every champ engages in fights with less than stellar boxers and they deserve a break at times, but the overall quality of Holyfield's opponent's were just so much better. What really makes a champion, is what they do when facing someone who is bigger, faster stronger and by all accounts should win the fight. Holyfield's whole career as a heavyweight was all about beating the odds, overcome overwhelming cicumstances and persevering. Something Mike Tyson could never do. When faced with real adversity Tyson always folded. He had a million excuses, but every fighter has problems and difficulties, including Evander, but he always overcame them. Evander Holyfield has without a doubt, the biggest heart in boxing. But what really sums it all up for me is how they dealt with each other. Holyfeild KICKED his ass in the first fight, and caused Tyson to have a mental breakdown in the second fight. I think the best way to describe Holyfield's career is to say that he is everything Cus D'mato wanted for Tyson. Evander Holyfield is everything Mike Tyson ever wanted to be as a fighter and then some. Five stars for an all time great.

 | TheEvilSaintEvan (0) 05/05/2004 | the warrior nickname says alot, maybe a little too much. hes got an inhumanly solid chin, terrific power, the best technique in the heavyweight division, and the heart of a champion. he knows how to train and hes never out of shape. after fighting and beating the best of his day, once he started to lose to lewis, that would have been a good time to retire. evander, you are truly a warrior, and a fighter worthy of legendary rememberance. you have nothing else to prove and you have had your years of glory. but please, for the sake of your health, reputation, and life, retire and stay retired. even you cant prevent the heavyweight division from continuing this downward spiral. evander holyfield is a legendary champion and a good man, but he needs to retire before he permanently damages himself.

 | Indio70 (0) 04/08/2004 | PLEASE RETIRE!!!
One of the greatest Heavyweights & Pound for pound fighters of all time. Worthy of mention with Ali, Louis, and Marciano. The Warrior has continued to make war waaaay past his prime. HBO needs someone in the booth!

 | roblinb (0) 11/09/2003 | It hurts me to rate the Warrior this low, but somebody needs to force this guy to retire. Even after being thoroughly trashed by the fat blown-up James Toney, Holyfield thinks he can contend for the heavyweight title. It's truly sad to see a faded former great struggle against fighters he would have cleaned the floor with ten years ago. He's probably going to end up slurring his words or worse soon if somebody in the boxing heirarchy does not step in and make this guy hang it up. Evander, your place in history is secure. We will miss you, but not for your recent fights. It was sad to see how badly Toney beat you up. Do all of us and your family a favor, and retire.

 | tricky (0) 06/17/2003 | How far will Evander Holyfield go down before he realizes it's time to hang em up. In the mid 90s the guy was a force, but now he is becoming embarassing. It's a shame when a great fighter doesn't know when to quit.

 | EDDIETHEGREAT (0) 02/12/2003 | I respect this guy because his dedication and perseverence are un matched by any other fighter today.
But, it is clear his love for the sport led him to go on way too long!!!!!
Would he have ever ever even looked like losing to the likes of Ruiz back in the day?
I do not think so...

 | crowbar (0) 12/16/2002 | I am 22 and Holyfield is probably the best boxer of my generation by far. I really hope he stops fighting though. His speech is getting slower and slower, and I feel that if he keeps fighting he may end up like Ali, or worse.

 | Potch1214 (0) 10/11/2001 | A great fighter, total class act, beat Tyson twice. Gotta love this guy. Evander is the best Heavyweight in the past 20 years.

 | sotoman (0) 07/01/2001 | Time to retire Real Deal! Evander was an impressive heavyweight in the most opportune time to be an impressive heavyweight-with weak opposition and incredible exposure (HBO, TVKO, SHOWTIME, etc.) he was able to establish himself in an age of old and overweight fighters (Foreman and Holmes to name a few) Evander did his homework with Tyson (constantly holding on the inside, headbutting, throwing elbows and shoulders) but he never TRULY impressed. His heart will perhaps go down as the most courageous in the sport which will be how the sport will remember him--a TRUE warrior!

 | TheGreatest (0) 04/25/2001 | Stick a fork in him he's done.....
Can anyone even understand a word he says???
and he's a religious man with like 10 kids by like 8 different women. He was never that great to begin with, so he beat Tyson who cares. One word comes to mind--OVERRATED.

 | ronson2@webtv.com (0) 03/09/2001 | EVANDER IS SHOWING SERIOUS SIGNS OF RING WEAR AND HAS KNOW RESORTED TO PURE FIGHTING INSTEAD OF KNOWING WHEN TO JAB AND BOX AND SLUG WHEN HE HAS HIS OPPONET IN TROUBLE.HIS REFLEXES ARE SLOWING,TOO MUCH HEAVYWEIGHT LIFTING HAS TIGHTENED HIS RANGE OF MOTION. IF HE LOSES THE HEAVY LIFTING AND COMES IN A LITTLE LIGHTER SAY 208-210 AND WORKS ON HIS SPEED AND STAMINA HE WIL LOOK ALOT BETTER.HE IS AVERY SMART FIGHTER AND KNOWS HOW TO CHANGE GAME PLANS IN ORDER TO WIN. AGE IS BECOMING FACTOR,SKILLS ARE SERIOUSLY DECLINING BUT HE CAN STILL FIGHT THE MAN IS AMAZING.HE SHOULD GO DOWN AS WON OF GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHTS IN BOXING HISTORY.

 | Johnny Roulette (3) 01/07/2001 | The last few years have seen Holyfield erase all the positive things he supposedly did for the sport. Thom Jones wrote a book of short stories called The Pugilist At Rest. As for Evander, that pugilist should have given it a rest four years ago. He was never great, and he flat out sucked in both Lewis fights. Lewis didn't even need, or have, his A game to beat Evander the second time. Don King can sure as hell have him.

 | FACTS (0) 12/26/2000 | I HAVE TO GIVE THIS GUY A FIVE STAR JUST FOR EVERYTHING HE HAS DONE FOR THE BOXING WORLD(including the donation of his ear). HE HAS MORE THAN EARNED THE FIVE STARS.

 | p4pchamp (0) 11/16/2000 | Holyfield days are behind him? When were his days here, sure he has a warrior mentality but he has never been the best boxer Riddick cleaned his clock until he started having problems. He only beat Tyson because he new to keep him out of reach and hold whenever Tyson got close, he fought a very smart fight. Lewis dominated him and if Lewis had been willing to take a chance I believe the judges would not have been needed. Now Holyfield has become a Don King pawn and has been given a belt he doesn't deserve, Ruiz (a nobody) convincingly beat him. I don't want to take anything from him because of his heart for the sport, but from ME Holyfield only gets a THREE.

 | Hit man hayes (0) 10/29/2000 | Where do you begin, well he might have been a five star 5 years ago, but since this is a pressent poll 1 star he gets. He has not donr nothing in years that makes him an elite guy. Hes getting old and you can tell by the way he fight, and speeks hes becomming like Ali. Hes dirty he got his ear bit off because of his head butts.

 | Swj99722om (0) 08/13/2000 | Play with it if you want, but Evander is a true warrior. He is one of thoes guys you just don't bet against. You never know when he might decide to take someone's head off. He has proven that he is a force in the game.

 | tyma6413om (0) 07/12/2000 | Holyfield is what a champion should be. Here's a guy who was a cruiserweight and moved up because he wanted Tyson in his heyday. He never ducked anyone, taking on the most logical challenger at the time.
Whenever things were going bad in the ring, he never folded. He just dug down deeper.
I've seen some ratings calling him a hypocrite. We're not here to rate his character. We're here to rate his boxing ability.
