There is no question that Fernando Vargas epitomizes bravery, nor is there any question that he is (or was) a talented fighter. But he runs his mouth a little too much, and as Randyman pointed out, "[Vargas] lets his emotions override [his] common sense." His built-up animosity for opponents have not served him well against the best in his career, leading to knockout losses against Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley (twice) and Felix Trinidad. Perhaps controlling his anger and focusing on the fight at hand would help rehabilitate his once-promising career. Furthermore, Vargas ought to give due credit to other fighters instead of making stupid excuses (such as blaming a headbutt for his initial TKO loss to Mosley).

Fernando Vargas is a good, gutsy fighter. I personally do not care for him. I think he lets his emotions overide common sense, and seems to derail his own fight plans. He let his hatred and jealousy of Oscar De La Hoya interfere with the fight, and it cost him. Also, I don't like thugs, and I put him in the same catagory as Mike Tyson.

a solid puncher who doesnt back down from a fight. he cant win against quality fighters, but other than that, he still wins. his comeback fight with raymond joval (a nobody) showed that he is not the fernando vargas of old.

Too Young to be fighting Tito in 2000. Why do you throw him in there with him at that age with only 20 fights under his belt but still he gave Tito fits if he would of stayed alive in that twelfth round there is no more TITOmania. But that is boxing, if, ands, or buts. Oscar really got marked up by him and if his recklessness didn't show he would have walked away with a nice decision, point is he is still a great fighter. If he was a couple more big fights we might be seeing the new version of Miguel Angel Gonzalez who is shopworn at best. That fight with Tito warped boxing fans to the days of Hagler, Leonard, Duran and Hearns Ohh my what could have been if these guys all stayed in the same class Oscar, Tito, Vargas, and Mosley. But the clock is ticking on this era and Vargas if he doesn't win this next fight his career is El Finito. He needs to get a rematch with Tito and De La Hoya before their careers are over and maybe we'll get some excitment. Question-Are you happy with Bernard Hopkins being the boxing king because im sure as hell not. He's a dirty fighter who cannot slug it out if he had to and has to resort to elbows and shoulder tugs. We want Vargas/Tito II Vargas/Mayorga (intriguing) Vargas/DeLa Hoya II (shootout). I love this fighter, needs to step back like he is doing to get his strenght back another loss could end him.

A true warrior. One of the last few fighters who gives it his all. All Vargas needs is a good corner and promoter who doesn't put him into anymore fights where he is mentally to young to fight. Once Vargas gains solid experience he will develop into one of the greatest fighters of his era.

he has achieved a lot for starting at such a young age, I believe he is going to keep on turning our heads

Fernando Vargas always puts up a good show because he has a heart. He is really young, however, he seems to have stop improving. And too many hit him too many times, he needs to do something about his health. Oh, and there's a typo in the info of Fernando Vargas, "Born in 1997...", he is young but not that young :P

I agree completely with Munson's comment I saw against Trinidad and I was very impressed by his determination. He has heart and he has great ability it is completely up to his own level of dedication whether he ever becomes a champion again.

I am not a big fan about his trash talk, but he always puts on awesome shows. He fought like a true warrior with fierce courage, even in defeat. I hope he wont be a shot fighter after the De La Hoya loss, He's still a really young guy with some good skills. He should have gotten a lot more expirience before his fights with Tito and the Golden Boy, he might have won them. I think if he takes his career a little bit slower and blame his losses on his managers and his trainer Eduaro Garcia he could mount a good comeback and become a dominant champion once again in a couple of years.Maybe I am just a die hard, I hope not.

GREAT COURAGE AND HEART.(NOW I KNOW WHY DE LA HOYA RAN) DESPITE THE BEATING HE TOOK FROM TRINIDAD I STILL GIVE HIM MORE CREDIT FOR NOT RUNNING. STAY AWAY FROM TRINIDAD, CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE AGAIN SO EARLY IN HIS JOURNEY. +

I really enjoyed watching Vargas fight against Trinidad. Vargas has a degree of brashness which I think you need as a fighter - even after a disastrous first round in which he was knocked down twice, he never seem to lose his composure, or his cockiness. He fought a smart fight and a brave one, and you have to admire someone who is thrust front and center, probably before he was ready, and still manages to make the most of it. Compare Vargas' effort and attitude with that of Tua during the Lewis fight and you will see what I am talking about.
Munson 12/04/2000
Despite the loss against Trinidad, Vargas showed me a lot of grit in the fight. He never backed down even when he was knocked down twice very early in the fight. He is well conditioned, has great punching power, and is a smart boxer. And, remember he is still very young. Fortunately, despite being knocked out, he didn't suffer a miserable beating that could have effected him the rest of his career (see Meldrick Taylor following Chavez fight). I think he will learn a great deal from this loss and come back strong in the future.

Though Tito was too much for Vargas he's still a great champ with a huge heart for the sport. He gave it all he had up to being KO'd. He was the IBF champ at the age of 21. The youngest jr. middle champ in history. The man beat Ike Quartey. Quartey might have pulled it off against the Goldenboy if he didnt lose the 12th round (lost by split decision). Vargas on the other hand defeated Ike with an unanimous decision. Vargas is a good boxer and still has time to grow. I think time will help bring more into the ring for Fernando.

Fernando Vargas finally met someone that can PUNCH and all his trash talking has come to an end. He couldn't be interviewed after the Trinidad fight because he was physically, mentally, and emotionally HURT. Especially PHYSICALLY.
Hit man hayes 10/29/2000
hes inexperienced, yes at 22. But great fighters have to start some where. Vargas is the real deal unlike the paper champ Trinadad. Vargas will defeat him in there up comming match, untill proven other wise. hes 5
coqu3680et 01/19/2000
Excellent fighter with many skills, however, he lacks experience - somewhat over rated. Ike Quartey should knock him out in the middle rounds (4/15/00).
