(06-24-06)Roy (like most) didn't know when to quit, and when his speed was spent he did not have a chin, the heavywieght run also took a toll. With age you cannot drop a lot of weight. Your body is not as resiliant. His legacy is trnished, but you cannot take away the accomplishments.

He was quick and packed a wallop,and definately had some skills.He probably should have stuck to his original weight class,though.Boxing ain't what it used to be,and part of the reason is mismanagement of the fights and fighters.

WAY OVERRATED

Roy Jones is the most overrated fighter in recent history. A few points to consider: 1. Jones' quality of opponents is nothing to brag about. He has admittedly refused to take dangerous fights unless he is paid astronomical sums. 2. Grffith was beating him easily Jones could barely handle 40 year old Mike McCallum. Why? Because Jones relies on speed and power and has little technical skills and the heart of a realtive pansy. 3. Are Glenhoffe Johnson and Antonio Tarver great fighters? Hell no. They are good --and that is all it took and ever will take to defeat the fraudulant Roy Jones, Jr. Too many ignoramuses are on this site who are dazzled by speed and power. Truly great fighters have 4 qualities: worthy opponents, formidable technical skils, a warrior's heart, and athleticism, Roy has athleticism. That's one out of four. That ain't great, baby. That's good. Tops. Robinson, Duran, Pep, Joe Louis. These are greats. Jones should close his mouth and know his place.

Has had a couple of hiccups in his last few outings...But that comes with age to the best of em in such a brutal sport...Losses at this stage in his career do not erase what the man has accomplished and contributed to the sport...Critics nowadays are so easy to forget what athletes have given to the sport...They tend to only focus on whats hot...If you followed his career from the beginning, you should acknowledge that he has made a great contibution to the sport of boxing.

anyone who is saying he is over-rated or flat out not good is smoking crack. the man fought all the contenders they put infront of him.....his questionable opponents at light heavy were not his fault.....the division was weak, and he still fought all the champs and contenders they had......and furthermore, it's not so much they were all bums, but more like they were in there w/ ROY JONES.....to whoever says ruiz doesn't count.....lets see you name former middleweights over the last 10-15 yrs who could beat ruiz (hey ruiz maybe boring but he wins the fight.....for what's OUT THERE NOW, he is a good HW).....that's another thing, has everyone forgotten that roy isn't a natural light heavy or heavyweight? he's under 6ft, and fighting some big men at times....roy spanked most of tarvers opponents easier than tarver did (one of which tarver lost too, and another tarver got a very questionable decision)....plus roy had to come back down to light heavy from adding 20 some odd pounds of muscle.....he spanked hopkins (i believe w/ a broken hand) and toney.....people give hopkins credit for beating 20 clowns, some of which he fought more than once (robert allen 3x.....you probably never heard of him, nobody else has either) and his biggest wins were against blown up welterweights (tito and oscar).....anyways, jones had the skill, speed, defence, good power.....had it all (notice i said had) like joe montana, or jordan, or holyfield, and others we watched these last 10-15 yrs, they get older and older.....all i had to see was tarver and johnson fight.....they both suck and would lose to roy 4-5 yrs ago. ps- by the way, he did not duck darious.....when they heard that montell, who jones destroyed, dropped darious 3x in the first 4 rds and the judges still had darious ahead.....they told darious to come to the us or forget it

Should've remained in his original weight class. Not a heavyweight contender. Hasn't had much luck since the JET-Magazine interview (in 2004) where he talked extensively about the mothers of his children. Maybe he would have better luck IF he treated those ladies with a little bit more respect.

One of the most overated fighters of all time. He defeated a list of no-name bums with the exception of Hopkins and Toney over a 10+ year career. And when finally challenged, he was creamed. Roy certainly has skills, but you can't be considered great if you haven't racked up wins against other legends of the sport. Believe me, he gets no props from me for beating John Ruiz.

I don't know why he became a fighter in the first place, he doesn't really like to fight and it shows. He's got some of the best hand speed and defensive ability I've ever seen, but he has assidiously avoided the most challenging fights available. None of the great ones have done that. Tarver's one punch kayo was impressive but Roy didn't look like he even wanted to try to get up. Jones likes it when he can totally dicate the tempo and action of a fight. Like Tyson, he can be had when faced with someone who is both good and not afraid of him. Jones is a very good fighter, but should not be considered among the all time elite in boxing.

People that say Roy Jones Jr. is overrated must only have started following boxing recently. Before Tarver came along, Roy was pound for pound the most dominant in the sport for more than a decade. He personally became my favorite boxer over the years due to his unorthodox style. His style is like a mixture of Ali and Sugar Ray. Only if boxing was as big as it was back in those days, Roy would get his recognition as one of the most talented athletes of our generation. In boxing it is very hard to remain dominant, but before Tarver handed Jones his first lost many thought Jones would go on to retire without a serious challange in the ring. It's unbelievable that James Toney, Bernard Hopkins, and John Ruiz could not pose a threat to Jones during their oppurtunities in the ring with him. And to everyone that says Roy fights nobodys, every boxer he fought has been a contender in that division. Maybe some were unknown, but so was Tarver before he hit the jackpot. So if you think Roy is overrated, I suggest you watch some of his other fights and think if you ever seen anybody do the things Roy has done in the ring. I love boxing, and it is only right to show repect when it is due. It will be interesting to see if this will be Roy's comeback or fall, either way for you Roy supporters or haters there's something to look forward to. He's the Mike Jordan of boxing! Believe it!

I love jones, I think physically he is the most impressive physical specimen in all of sports. Mentally he is a ingenius fighter, he would easily have been an all-time top 10 fighter if he had a decent division. Obviously it is in no way jones fault that he came up at a time when his division was void of any competition. Just as it wasn't marcianos, louis', or holmes fault. Jones had sporadic fights where he was up against someone of any threat. Ofcourse he fought some decent fighters which he outclassed so bad he made them look like bums but he never really fought a defining great fight. Toney was the closest he ever got. Hopkins was young and not the fighter he would eventually become and montell griffith shouldnt have even had a second shot cause jones should have handles him in the 1st fight. I don't fault him for the Tarver loss because he was older and slower but a one punch KO in the 2nd round was highly dissapointing.

Most talented boxer over the last 15-20 years!

Roy Jones Jr. was the best for over a decade, and like most other great fighters, someone young and hungry like Antonio Tarver was going to come along and knock him off his lofty perch. Nevertheless, he was the best for the longest time. In any case, the props are now to Tarver who deserves some respect for beating 'da man'. Roy is now way past his prime.

What makes a great fighter: talent (Jones has it); winner (Jones has just about won every fight); being challenged and coming out on top (this is where Jones falls short). Easily beating up a bunch of bums doesn't make Jones great. The first time he's challenged in 10 years and what happens? Tarver beat him in the first fight, knocked him out in the second fight. And look at the way he was knocked out - 1 punch!!!! The ONLY SERIOUS PUNCH HE TOOK IN THAT FIGHT!!! And look how long he was woozy after he got up. 2nd round. 1st clean punch landed. Heck, Meldrick Taylor in the 12th round against Chavez got up from his knockdown more clear headed than Jones against Tarver. Jones is a fraud who should get major props for fooling the public for as long as he did.

Even though he is coming off a KO lost, he's still a 5 in my book. He is simply the best out there and if he gets a rematch with Tarver he will show the world who is the best pound for pound. used to be a 5 in my book, the KO changes everything. For years we all wondered whether or not Roy could take a punch. He fought all those bums and nobody ever hot him. Now he gets hit a solid shot and he CAN'T GET UP! So let's stop calling him Ali and Robinson. Those 2 guys NEVER got knocked out! Never heard the referee count 10 over them! Roy was a fraud guys. Greatest pure boxer in the last 20-25 years. I don't think there is a fighter under 240 that Roy can't embarass with the minor exception of Chris Byrd, who may be just as good if not better. That, to me, would be the ultimate match-up...a unification between Byrd & Jones, Jr.

I hate the fact that most people who post on here on American, because everyone else can see this guy for what he really is, an average fighter. Give him some top quality heavys and see how he will struggle. Lennox would finish him within 4 rounds.

roy jones is truely an amazing fighter. in my opinion, one of THE best fighters, pound for pound, this world has ever seen. every challenge he has come across, he has overcome. there is no one that cannot say this man is not a true champion. and in the worlds on roy himself, "and they got the nerve to say i ain't fight nobody, but i just make em look like nobody."

Roy Jones Jr. is the best pound for pound fighter, there should be no question. The fighter's in Roy Jone's division are not at his caliber, perhaps boxing fans should realize when your the best, no one will looks good next to you.

No-one can dispute that this guy is one of the best in the world today. If he keeps fighting the way he is now and continues to beat top fighters he has to be recognised as an all time great.

Overated!

A middle weight boxer with a heavy weight punch. Just because he isn't a heavy weight, he doesn't get as much respect as he deserves. Put on some weight and take out Tyson, Roy.....

Roy Jones is currently the best pound for pound boxer in the world. He conquered the middleweight division, then he conquered the super middle weight division, then he conquered the light heavy weight division(unifying all 3 titles, and now he has won a heavy weight title. This alone makes him arguably one of the great fighters of all time. Then there is his record of something like 42 and 1. The one loss being a cheap disqaulification against Griffin, whom Jones anialated in their rematch. Jones possess extreme quickness, speed, power and accuracy, as well as great footwork.

There is not too much to say. We all saw Roy Jones jr. fighting ans he's just the best boxer in history. I'm not scared to say that he's even greater than Ali. We would like to see him in action a few years more (right guys?), so please Roy, don't retire yet!

roy jones jr. is in a class by himself bar none! everyone said he would run and peck at ruiz but he stood toe to toe and dismantled ruiz. i was fotunate enough to greet roy at the airport upon his return to pensacola the day after the ruiz fight and he didnt have a scratch on him!he is to fast, has to much ability for his own good. he doesnt fight chumps, he just has the misfortune to make everyone who fight him look like chumps.

I had the pleasure to meet Roy Jones Jr. in a park in Newark N.J. Roy handled himself like a true gentleman, being kind and courteous to all who came in his presence. As far as boxing goes, Roy Jones is at the top of his game. He's proven wrong a lot of so called experts (in the boxing world) and continues to make history in style. Who's going to beat him???

Just look at the way he fights, i really believe he would be up there if he was put in with any fighter in his division, past or present.
