Although I don't have much of a sweet tooth, Miette Confiserie wins me over every time I stop in while showing someone around my neighborhood in San Francisco. The shop is tiny, yet beautifully laid out. Their attention to detail is immaculate, and it feels like you're stepping into another world for a moment (especially when there are no other customers), think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets Amelie. Miette Confiserie has a unique selection of candy including a broad range of licorice (complete with a menu), local artisanal chocolate and caramels, old-fashioned treats, and standard fare, all exquisitely presented in jars, stacks and candy bowls throughout the store. There's also a bakery case up at the front with beautiful cakes and cupcakes. Everything in it is small and perfect. These would be great for dessert after a dinner party or other small gathering. I haven't had a chance to try much of anything at this store yet (I know...weird...but for me it's like a design research trip), but I was told the chocolate cupcakes taste like they were made with bittersweet chocolate, so I'm eager to try one now. Also, I'll return to try the double-salt licorice. I'm not a huge licorice fan, but I've enjoyed some of the saltier varieties in the past.If you're in Hayes Valley for brunch or Blue Bottle Coffee some day, definitely stop by Miette Confiserie before you leave.
