Magic was one of the most special backs ever to play. Small, slight and elusive as they come, his running style and size were an inevitable accident waiting to happen. At his best he could see holes before they opened, or holes that opened behind him.

I've only ever seen him on film. Someone e-mail me and tell me if he was even more amazing to watch in person. . .

Others here have summed up Sayers quite well. I will only add that he was the most exciting athlete I ever saw in any sport and that we were all robbed when injury cut his great career short.

Besides beng the greatest pure halfback that ever lived, Gale was also the greatest kick and punt returner. His combination of sprinters speed, unmatched elusiveness, and driving power were astonishing. His play was breath taking. When Gale went down with his first devastating knee injury, he was averaging 6.3 yards per carry in the ninth game of the season. Upon close analysis of his progress to then, it is clear that he had reaced a point of being Jordanesque. He had become a man amongst boys! It is tragic that the NFL And the Television Networks remain locked up in litigation, preventing us from seeing all the games in their entirety. Truly,if we had access to watch those games, people would surely watch every single game Sayers ever played before the injury, with jaws dropped from the 1st touch of the ball to the last tragic carry. Only seeing is believing.

Sorry Walter, Gale is the greatest Bear Rb of all time. No back before or since had his moves. only cruel fate and injury could stop him. Had he been healthy, not even Emmitt Smith would break his records

gale sayers is the best running back ever without question. he had moves that have never been done before or since. he was so fluid and quick that no one could stop him. unlike most running backs he would only carry the ball maybe 10-15 times a game where as others carry it 25 -30 times and posted the same numbers. the game when he scored six touchdowns he only ran the ball 9 times and did all that by the third quarter. what else can you call him but the best?

The original Barry Sanders. Gayle Sayers took some punishing hits (such was the era in which he played) and never backed down. Jim Brown's crushing style caused opponents to look silly because no one wanted to tackle him after the first time. While no opponent ever got leveled by Sayers, they were made to look like fools time and again by his near superhuman agility and speed. A premier rusher and formidable receiver, Sayers also was the all-time top kick returner when he retired (after only 7 seasons, of which only 4 1/2 were healthy). As I've mentioned with Jim Brown, you have to actually see Gayle Sayers in action to truly appreciate what he brought to the game. If you can, catch an episode of NFL films that showcases him. Remember that the players of that era had to face shoulders to the jaw, forearms to the head, clotheslines, and chop blocks. Sadly, it was just those things that cut short the career of a player who may has easily been the all-time leader in countless categories. If you appreciate Barry Sanders, watch Gayle Sayers. Cuts, jukes, spins, and afterburners that no one could match made him one of the best ever.

If you've seen his numbers and if you've seen a great deal of footage, then I think you'd have to agree that this guy was a miracle on the field until his knees were destroyed.

The best running back ever. If his career hadn't been cut short by injury he would have every record. He is the only person to score six touchdowns in a game. No one has ever had as much talent as him.

He only played in the NFL for about four years before an injury ended his career. Could have easily been the best running back ever. He played for a great Bears team.
