I'm always in favor of adding another Irish holiday to the calendar. Besides celebrating the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter, Samhain has some mytho-historical significance. The Cath Maige Tuireadh (Battle of Mag Tuired) takes place on Samhain. The deities Morrígan and Dagda meet and have sex before the battle against the Fomorians, an act which gives the victory to Dagda's people, the Tuatha Dé Danann. And if that isn't worth a full scale holiday, I don't know what is.By the way, this is pronounced Sow-heen, not Sam-Hane.
