Misunderstood outside of the greater philly area. . .yes, his emotions have got the better of him on occassion. . .but he has been a great coach and teacher to many kids ignored by more famous or 'better' coaches. . .Chaney could have left Temple for a more powerful program but he stays loyal. . .his passion burns and causes wonderful results and occassional burns- you take the good with the bad. Chaney is a hall of fame coach overlooked in this age of glossy, slick-Armani-wearing dirtbag coaches.

racist jerk.

He is more than a coach; he is a teacher, a man who cares about his players and how they perform off the court and after their playing days are over. He is as close to God as a human being can hope to be. I think he is one of the most terrific people in sports; in fact, I think he is one of the most terrific people alive.

love him

Shouldn;t be allowed to coach anymore after threatening to kill Calipari and sending in a goon to break a player's arm.

Great coach, never has very much talent. Greatest defensive mind ever

Forget Basketball. This guy is a flaming jackass who constantly runs his mouth.

Coach Chaney is reaching the twilight of his career and probably never was the best offensive coach in the world. But he does more with less talent than any coach I can think of and watching great teams fall apart in the face of the matchup zone is a pleasure year after year. Moreover, he is a great mentor and teacher who is revered by his former players. He has turned down better offers to stay where he feels he can have the most impact. There have been a couple of dry years recently, but the 2004 team should be back in the NCAA tournament and nobody will want a piece of them.

A great Hall Of Fame coach who is losing it a bit ( kinda like JoePa). Over his career he's done great things with underrated teams. He's an unothodox coach with a unique style and personality, but he means well and has meant a lot to Temple University. I wish him the best and hope he starts winning more often.

a bit over-rated

Does a lot with very little - EVERY year. I would like to see Coach K try to make a team out of the players Chaney gets every year.

I used to like John Chaney. His teams were relatively successful (though in a relatively weak conference), he emphasized defense, and he recruited a lot of troubled kids. What turned me against him was when he literally threatened to have an opposing coach killed after a tough loss. I only saw this aired once, but I never saw the press conference shown again (eg on Sportscenter). That made me wonder if the press tiptoes around Cheney due to his racial positions.

A racist a$$hole.

Since I was a kid this guy has been my favorite. When you hear the way his former players talk about him and thier relationship with one another you know he has had a lasting effect on their lives. If not many players want to play that style of ball then maybe fundamental basketballs' days are numbered. The man is an institution, a hall of famer, and a legend.

i am a kentucky fan but in my best interest this person and bobby knight has done a hell of a lot for not only their players but for the best interest of their players, they teach more than the game of basketball and i love them both. best of luck

Are you serious? This guys days are numbered. Not many players would even consider playing his style of basketball.

John Chaney represents everything that is right with college basketball. He takes underprivileged kids and teaches them life lessons; about discipline, about commitment, about passion, about team, and finally about basketball. His teams are always well coached, and usually very, very good. He wears his heart on his sleeve - which makes his players want to run through walls for him.

John Chaney has a stifflin defense that gives the opponents hell when they play them. This schematic zone can only be made by a great one.
