Whenever I'm feeling down in the morning, I just eat my John Stockton brand oatmeal in the morning. Suddenly, my dress shirt and pants are surrounded in gold dust, and become a Utah Jazz jersey.

This guy was a solid player. He wasn't a great athlete but he played hard all the time and was the ultimate team player. If the Jazz had had a decent center Stockton and Malone would have won a couple of NBA titles.
Marcelina 08/29/2008
awesome player that exemplifies how an athlete can garner honors without being a gloryhound
CanadaSucks 04/24/2008
Stock gets love from NBA geeks for being the slow white guy who made millions- and he's a five-star all-time point guard- but as an all-time player he's a solid 3. . .great, great passer and a solid shooter. . .probably an underrated defender but check out his secret statistic of career steals- Stock should be on this list, but he's not upper-echelon. . .
badgerfan 04/24/2008
Sure he wasn't on the Jordan level or West level, but I give him a five because of the way he played. I could watch Stockton all day.
KnoweldgeJT 09/30/2007
Good, and possibly a great passer and SET shooter. Had no killer instinct, and do not do well against the (diminishing PG skills) of PG's during the 90's. Didn't do well against GP, or Kevin Johnson. Isaiah used to abuse him as well. I don't think his skills stand the test of time, just not athletic enough.
chathaf 01/30/2006
I'm an avid Jazz fan, and I had a great time during the 90's at the height of Stockton & Malone. Stockton was a complete player, his durability and longevity have to count for as much as his stats. His willingness to set picks and, although much maligned, play borderline dirty made other players better. He's not the greatest of all time--Magic, Robertson, and even Isiah were quicker and stronger. Still, he would be a very good consolation prize for any team missing on those three. Plus, his character, one that never distracted from the team, was a huge asset to the league.
rowbite 09/10/2005
Just had to reply to dnice;s comment, not as good as freaking Kevin Johnson, and freaking Mark Price, your kidding me right. Mark Price, how many records does he hold? How many times did he lead his team to the finals, what about Kevin Johnson, did he retire with the Suns, and Gary Payton? When Gary Payton holds some records then you can talk. Muggsy Bogues was a better point guard than Mark Price
Chagoth 08/01/2005
Well the Stockton is the best point guard ever knuckleheads are out in force. While Stockton is definitely one of the fifteen or twenty best players in NBA history, it is absurd to say he's the best point guard. That title belongs to Magic Johnson or Oscar Robertson (if you decide to count Oscar as a point guard). Those who say, He's the all-time leader in assists and steals so that makes him the best are intellectually dishonest. You are purposely selecting statistics to bolster your argument. If you cared about the facts, you'd also mention that Stockton is the second all-time leader in turnovers! You'd also note that Magic has a higher assists-per-game average. Magic didn't play anywhere near as long a Stockton so the assist totals aren't close. But knuckleheads are on both sides. Those of you who bash Stockton because he never won a championship don't get it. Athletes who play team sports should not be judged by how many championships they've won (or didn't win as the case may be). That's unfair and it doesn't say anything about individual greatness. Basketball is a team game and it takes a team to win it all. There are many factors as to why some great players never won it all: Lack of great players around them, level of competition, unsupportive ownership/management, injuries, etc. Not all of those applied to Stockton, of course, but you get my point. Team championships do not automatically equal individual greatness. One idiotic myth perpetuated by Jazz fans--most of whom are complete morons in my experience--is that Stockton is the best pure point guard in NBA history. What nonsense. First, the suggestion that somehow Oscar and Magic are impure because they were so versatile is dumb. The pure tag is used to bring Magic and Oscar down while raising Stockton up. It's stupid. Stockton cannot compete for best point guard ever if all things are equal so Magic and the Big O are brought down by applying the pure label. Look, Stockton fanatics, it's no insult that Stockton is the third best point guard in league history. Move along home, morons. And to the fella who said stockton was a decent shooter. Um, Stockton had a career average of fifty-one percent from the field. That is simply stunning for a point guard and I daresay it'd be damn hard to find another point guard in NBA history who has a career field-goal percentage that high. Go ahead and look. Heck, most shooting guards don't have field-goal percentages that high--not even Jordan. Stockton is the third best point guard in league history. And that's okay.

Holds the record for the most steals and assists of all time. How can you possibly rate this guy under 5 stars. Too bad he didn't get a ring... he deserves one.
Jar-Jar Binks 07/23/2005
Coming from a small school in Gonzaga, who would've thought that this 6'2 point guard would become one of the best players of all-time. He scored when he had to, but that wasn't what he came here for. He passed first and if necessary, shot last. He and Malone were the best pick-and-roll duo of all-time.
kattwoman 04/07/2005
stockton to malone. they were awesome together and john stockton awesome on his own. it was sad to see him retire but he always be one of the utah jazz's best. im also from utah and a jazz so maybe im partial
twansalem 03/23/2005
Best pass first point guard ever.
BigMacJoe25 02/22/2005
A true legend. I wish people still play the way he played.
pistol 11/11/2004
John was amazing, so many times he, malone, russell and last but certainly not least hornacec led the jazz to 2 divison titles and 2 western conference championships, but.. unfortunately the odds were against them in all of the champoinships that they were able to attend in, but never forget the amazing stockton, nov 22 they are retiring his jersey #12 there is no way that i am going to miss that
soapblaster 08/31/2004
Has to be the best point guard of all-time, which I think is the most important possition. He made the Jazz a contender.
superpug 07/06/2004
John Stockton...What can I say about him? He is the greatest player ever...not just point guard but player. He had the assists and the steals to back it up. There are not a whole lot of guys that play for the same team and doesn't once complain about money or a championship. His character explains his ability far more than a ring could.
conhusk 04/06/2004
should receive an oscar in 'flop' category (best among malone, rodman, hornacek); not flashy to watch, but one of the best pure point guard ever. too bad for playing in JORDAN era resulting on zero championship
darknessforall 04/04/2004
Greatest point guard to ever play. Once averaged 14 and a half assists a game, and is the only player in history to have more than one season of 1,000 assists or more (he did it SEVEN times, while a guy like Magic only managed it once). Also, amazingly, shot 57% one season -- and this was a jump shooter! Nobody saw the court like this guy, and he was an asbolut killer in a close game.
dnice 02/28/2004
The most overrated player in history. at his best was not as good as Payton, Kevin Johnson or Mark Price.
wicky369 02/11/2004
an absolute pro!!! he is a top three of all time at pg
ClassicTVFan47 12/10/2003
Awesome three-point shooter! I love the three-point shot, much more so than the dunk. Stockton is one of the greats.
al_20176 12/01/2003
One of the best point guards in the game. The shorts could've been a little longer though.
DeathRattle 11/20/2003
This guy could hit a three-pointer from anywhere. When the Jazz need the big points to jump into or hold the lead, they would call on Stockton.
archivist 10/20/2003
Incredible skills, court leadership, dedication and longevity! Oh, how I wish the Jazz had won the Finals once!
kman1582 07/17/2003
Would be nothing without Malone, still a good player though.
RebelYell1861 05/28/2003
Gotta love him.
AEnzhRu 05/28/2003
One of the classiest, if not THE classiest NBA players ever. In a day and age where NBA athletes will forsake their franchise and fans at the drop of a dime for a few dollars more and complain they only earn 14 million dollars a year instead of 16, Stockton is one of the few shining examples left of unselfishness, not just in his team play but his loyalty to the Jazz for not very much money. Never complained about not earning what he was worth and he was very injury-free for 20 years and always gave 110%. He made everyone around him better and was a great team leader and excellent point guard. Hail to the all-time leader in steals and assists. The NBA will be a lot stupider and bleaker realm without him playing anymore.
bigdondoo 05/12/2003
Determination, ability, and power. Stockton had all of these in his small frame. He was also one of the few professional atheletes that wasn't spoiled. He didn't always want the ball, because he understood that basketball is a team sport.
hollaholla 01/22/2003
There's no doubt John Stockton is a very good player. But #13 on this list? That's a crime...ZERO RINGS...As for where he ranks among point guards...I'de take Cousy,West,Magic and their rings any day ...#4 is the highest you can put him
Budc9512om 01/14/2002
The second greatest pointguard of alltime. This guy is a true professional and understands teamwork. He is undersized physically but his heart makes all the difference in the world. A truly great player.
ellajedlicka21 11/17/2001
He is truly one of the greats even though he is a current player. It is amazing that he is the all-time assists leader by such a large margin and that continues to grow.
femalemusclefa n 05/02/2001
I still love to watch this guy play. One of the few remaining true professionals in pro basketball these days. The guy is the ultimate team player, and amazingly ranked in the Top 5 in four categories this season despite pushing 40. He is one of the greatest point guard to ever play the game. Even though I like the Sacramento Kings, you can't deny what this guy has done in his great career. Hoep he plays a couple of more seasons.
magellan 12/25/1999
Scrappy, tough, smart - but not one of the all-time elite players.
