Averaging a triple double is maybe the coolest stat out there in basketball. I don't see anybody ever doing that again.

He can shoot, pass, and get rebounds. So what if he didn't score 100 points in a game, or have a jersey werth 100 dollars. Wilt could score, get boards, and play D, but what else can he do. The Big O can shoot, dribble, pass, get rebounds, steal, and even block. Heck, he's the only guy to average a triple-douple in a season. HE could do it all, but he did all better than anyone else.

Probably the second best player of all time, right behind Wilt. Granted, he probably wouldn't have as many triple doubles in today's game, as there are far less rebounds to be had due to less shots taken, but he wouuld still dominate the competition. Probably understood the game's subtleties better than anyone, except maybe Bird (both happen to be Hoosiers, so this is understandable).

You would never see Lebron averaging a triple double for a whole year. This is the second best player ever, after MJ
Robbo59 01/22/2006
Believe me, this guy was never under rated while he played! Again, until Magic and Bird appeared on the scene, "The Big O" was widely regarded as the best player ever to play the game. He could run, jump, shoot, rebound, play defense, and handle the ball as well as anyone and had more combined tools than any of his peers. Don't be fooled by all of that acrobatic garbage, that is just an adjustment made to a game that started when Julius Erving took off from the free throw line at the half time show during the all star game one year. Basketball players have always been able to run and jump. They just played the game differently in those days. Back then they actually scored points. Shooting is much more skillful and much more fun to watch than slamming a ball through a hoop that is only a foot or so above your reach. The Big O could put the ball through the hoop. He could also take it away from you and pass it to one of his teammates so that they could put it through the hoop.

very good and very underrated.

Could do anything with a basketball..
rahsaanj88 05/10/2004
By far and away the most complete player in NBA history.
Capt_Mojo 04/17/2004
Red Auerback called him the greatest ever. That's all you need to know.

the guy only averaged a triple-double for more than one season.....jason kidd's model (kinda) in a way

I'd give Oscar a 6 rating. He could shoot long jumpers or post up. He was a great passer, dribbler and defender. He was one of those athletes who looks like he sees the game in slow motion.

UNDOUBTEDLY THE BEST PRO PLAYER EEEEEVVVVVEEEEERRRRR! IM NOT GOING TO SAY ANYTHING ELSE.
JSA7 05/26/2003
best offensive player EVER, yes better than MJ and Wilt
SixerFan03 05/07/2003
Oscar Robertson not only averaged a tripple double, he was averaging a tripple double for his first five years. His stats were around 30 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds. In his second season, he averaged a tripple double for the whole season.
strawfoot 03/06/2003
When a guard is getting 10 rebounds and ten assists while still scoring in double figures, and doing it every night, you know you're not talking about MJ or Magic. I grew up playing drive-way ball trying to copy his cool free-throw style. Todays guards could learn plenty watching Oscar's highlight reel.

Oscar lead his highschool team to the first ever Indiana state championship team from the city of Indianapolis. He lead them to the first ever undefeated season in the state of Indiana. Like Rick Mount he got the points before the 3 point shot was invented. His Pro career was stifled by his management at Cincinnati and he finally got the championship at Milwaky(Spl). In his days there was no 3 point line but he got the points and triple doubles anyway. Those were different times so you can't compare Oscar with Jorden and Jorden would be the first to say so. He didn't miss many shots cause How do you block a fade-away shot?

Simply THE greatest & helped with civil rights too. Now works with about 10000 healthcare & homeless projects , though appears a jerk on-screen.
HDawg1248 12/23/2002
Oscar was a very good ballplayer who had unbelievable all-around stats, but he wasn't a great winner like Bird, Magic, or MJ.
Cardigans5 06/30/2001
He averaged a triple double for a whole season. It's unreal!

I feel sorry for all the young folks who never had the oppertunity to see the "Big O" in his prime. before Jordan, this player was considered "the best NBA player of all time. at 6' 5" and close to 235 lbs. Oscar was the first true "big guard". playing the point he was unstoppable. I'm 47 years old, have been watching the NBA since 1965. NO ONE besides Oscar has averaged a triple-double over a full season. a stat that everyone just loves in todays' NBA. and his defense was fantastic. the battles w/ Jerry West was awesome to see, pure pleasure. in my opinion, the 2nd best guard all time. between Jordan and Magic.

The best ever!
