05/09/2008 | Great levergun for anything you want to cover with the 45-70 cartridge, from mild to wild loadings. Equiping my 1895 Guide Gun with a Skinner Sight is the best thing I probably could have done. Everyone have fun, shoot straight.

12/24/2006 | Good starting point for a lever gun. skip mounting a scope and install a rear peep sight and a "fibre optic" front sight, like a williams fire sight or a tru glow. if you don't need the front sight hood, chuck it! That will make that front sight you just installed look like a laser beam. (super fast acquistion). If you just have to have a hood, go to an open top hood from marlin. You'll find them on their 22's. And unless you hand is smaller than a five year old's, replace the lever with a bigger loop from somewhere like Brownells. It's a good hunting gun and plenty accurate, but loud at the range when your sighting in or working up a load. So bring your ear plugs!

One of the best leveraction rifles made. Hard hitting round that can be shot with soft kicking loads or full bore powerhouse loads that are capable of taking any game animal on the planet. Over a 130 years old and going strong.

07/12/2005 | I love this rifle. Short, quick & accurate. Not with the original sights though. I have not been able to find any reciever sights that look good on this rifle so I installed a NcSTAR red dot. A hundred times better. There is a sight called Ukrainian that looks like it would look good on this rifle.
I use this rifle on my ranch for deer and mountain lion. Great rifle. If your thinking of buying one, you won't be disappointed.

08/20/2004 | I have killed thousands of bears with my guide gun and they have all died within one second of the first shot! Most shots were made a 600 yards, while they were on a dead run towards me. I love my guide gun better than I love any of my family members

07/22/2004 | I live in Alaska, and have owned this rifle with the ported barrel for over 3 years now. It is by far the best woods gun I own, and I own some very expensive firearms. I carry it whenever I am out in the bush. It is the only rifle I care to trust my life to, up here. Do yourself a favor though, hand load your own ammo. This will allow you to use the full potential of this round and rifle combo. Also dont put a scope on it. There is no reason to do so if you a competent shooter. A scope on a rifle with a short range as this is useless. Put on a receiver sight such as a Williams or Lyman. I prefer the Lyman. These are an aperture sight, aka peep sight, and they are a vast improvement over the stock sight. This style of sight is fast to acquire a target, and is very accurate in good light and poor light. If you dont own the Marlin 1895 Guide Gun, then go buy one and you wont ever look back.

07/03/2004 | I bought the 1895ss and i am totally impressed,shoots very acurate,and very smooth action ,but the stock sights have to go. i mounted a bushnell banner scope and it shot ausome for about 10 shots,then the scope blew apart. I am going to try a elite scope next.. can`t wait till hunting season to try it out on a moose, should be fun!!

04/26/2004 |  If I had ever owned a high dollor lever gun, this one might have graded a 4 star. The gun looks nice.
I mounted a 1 to 4 scope on the gun and hunt at 1 power. The rifle shoots better than I can hold it and, on my gun, barrel heat up does not change the point of impact. Recoil is brisk and the recoil pad is misnamed. It is too hard to help much with recoil. Maybe it should be called a thick buttplate. I have found the solution to developing a flinch. I have a friend load the gun for me while my back is turned, sometimes she loads an empty case and somtimes a live round. If she sees any movement when I drop the hammer on an empty case she is more than happy to point my error out. This will corrects the problem before it becomes an issue. Try it sometime.
Though this is too much gun for whitetail I use it because I like doing so. ;-) I killed one buck with it last year. He went down where he stood from a round through the neck. It was a 405 grain mid-power reload. I looked at the wound channel and the bullet neither struck the spine or any large blood vessel. I think the impact in the muscle was enought to damage the buck's spinal cord.

02/12/2004 | It's compact, accurate, powerful, and fast handling. What more could you ask for?? I've added the large lever loop for better use with gloves and firesights. It's dropped everything it's touched with authority including a 400 pd. black bear. Jormah

01/13/2003 | I think that the 1895 Guide gun is an excellent brush gun, and it handles well. I intend to upgrade the sights, and would like to see a more durable finish; similar to parkerizing, but that is more of a personal preference. One thing that concerns me is the retaining screw on the lever action, wants to back out during shooting the more stout loads, like the Buffalo Bore and Cor-Bon. I'd recommend this for up close and personal hunting.

08/02/2001 | You have to love this gun. Compact, powerful, handles well, ACCURATE. Only gripes, crummy sights [plenty of after market available these days], and I can do without those darn barrel ports.
