I would have more respect if he didnt lie to Congress and now that the steroid agenda has faded, Sosa is tryin' to make a come back with the Texas Rangers. I dont think he has any talent left, hes past his prime now.
doobiesNhof 05/30/2006
Out of baseball because of steroids.
GriffeyFan04 09/15/2005
As a baseball player: 1 out of 5. NO defense (gives up more runs in the field than he's ever driven in, poor running, strikes out more than anybody (#2 on the all-time list), STEROIDS (duh), CORK (lied about that too) As a person: -5 out of 5. LIAR, CHEATER, TEMPER He's one of the biggest cheaters in baseball history and has dishonestly climbed the stat charts for reasons of personal glory. I hope MLB steps up and does the right thing: erases his stats from the year 1997 on, or just wipes out his entire career. We know he used steroids, look at how much his head changed shape. He looks like an unfrozen cave-man. Illegal drug use is criminal. He has been called out on steroid use before by Sports Illustrated's Rick Reilly and reacted by cursing like a lunatic with roid-rage. He knows he's accomplished nothing legitimately. He's one of the worst teammates in the history of sports and the public finally became aware when the Cubs fined him for walking out on his teammates (and lying about it) on the last day of 2004. He's dishonored his family, the city of Chicago, the Cubs organization, and the game of baseball. What about those players on the all-time HR list that he surpassed who accomplished their feats through hard work? They got cheated the most.

With great reluctance I have to give one of the most selfish, unappealling players ever to play the game 2 stars because he was once a good player and his personality thoughout the thrilling home run contest in 98 was engaging and good for baseball. However in the last few years, Sosa has suffered a staggering decline in fortunes (both on and off the field) virtually unparalleled in the sporting world for which he has no one to blame but himself. The corked bat debacle, the bogus charity work in his homeland, the strong evidence that he was one of baseball's many steroid abusers, his alarming slump in productivity and last but certainly not least, the selfish and dismissive attitude towards his fans, club and fellow players (which he managed to conceal so effectively for much of his career) have together combined to make a once respected ball player a figure of justifiable public derision. The damage to Sosa's reputation is irreversible but if he was to quietly exit from the game today he would prevent further injury to it. Unfortunately for him I suspect he is too arrogant and simple to take this step.
allstardude1 04/14/2005
He learned to play the game with a milk carton glove, tree trunk bat, and whatever they could find as bases.
dpostoskie 02/16/2005
Dude stikes out every 3-4 AB, carries a .277 AVG and has gone from 64-49-40-35 HR. The Cubs should be a better team without him and I expect him to crest the 150 K range with the O's. The pitchers will go right after him and he'll end up with less than 35 jacks. This guy would NEVER been mentioned if it weren't for roids.
crash_davis 12/22/2004
I bleed Cubbie blue all the way and, yes his homer run in '98 was cool. But the more time that goes by, the more you realize how phony and selfish this idiot actually is. Walks out on his teammates the last day of the season and isn't accountable for anything. I'm still waiting for the day some team decides they want this loser (and God help whatever team that is), it'll be like a second Christmas for me.
Dev 11/26/2004
Another roid freak. His stats should be thrown out along with those of Barry Bonds'.
OneHungryMonst er 08/23/2004
Although he may be struggling lately, he's a hall of famer and, if he hadn't gotten injured, he would be a lot closer to 50 home runs this year.
glowingmutan 08/18/2004
well i was gonna give him a 4 star but his swinging mechanics this year are screwed up entirely so 3 starts
1JohnDoeFan 07/14/2004
The best right fielder of all time. I have watched him evolve through the years... first with the Rangers then White Sox now CUBBIES!!! Classy guy not an arrogant jerk like Bonds and Griffey Jr.
Aneudy25 06/28/2004
He's a 5, but minus 1 for the corked bat incident..I mean batting practice bat...
padd3302 04/13/2004
Drug-abusing, fraudulent, cheater, racist. And a Cub, too.
mrmcduff 01/15/2004
Practice bat? NOT.
miIani 11/30/2003
Sosa is an awsome hitting, but there are better ball players like Bonds, Jeter
iluvamerica 08/06/2003
I'm having a hard time getting over the corked bat thing. He shouldn't have even brought it with him in the dug out.
cjs13 07/02/2003
good, not great, has more natural talent than mcgwire ever did, but steroid use has pumped up boths totals
what up dog 07/01/2003
i read a book about sammy. hes my favorite player. go cubs.
wetsack 06/22/2003
What an arrogant idiot. To through away all that talent, and prestige by using a corked bat. Is there any limit to his stupidity? He has now jeopordized all that he accomplished, and at the same time, he managed to tarnish the sport of baseball.
hrd2h8 06/22/2003
Sammy Sammy Sammy...what is the baseball loving world to do with you? You've put up some great numbers the past few years, but is that from the great talent you possess or is it because you've pumped so much crap into your body and your bat? First the steroids, which some people might have forgotten, that you animately denied ever happening and now this. I would've given you five stars, but ONLY took away one each for your "false accusations and mistakes", which I think is extremely generous.
kolby1973 06/22/2003
I really don't know much about him, but my Dad thinks he is a good player, so I will give him 3 stars for that! :)
lukskywlkr. 06/22/2003
I couldn't really care less if he used a corked bat or not. Tests have shown they don't help you at all. The thing that gets me is that he can't take his punishment like a man, he has to lie and insult our intelligence.
Datmartin 06/21/2003
Sosa Is A Steroid Using, Cork In His Bat Fluky!
help me 06/21/2003
dumb bastard
RebelYell1861 06/19/2003
I think he's a good ball player and I pretty much believed him when he said that corked bat was only for BP and he grabbed it by mistake. But it IS kinda funny how one of the biggest hitters in baseball gets caught with a corked bat all of a sudden. Oh well, it's things like this that make the game more interesting I suppose.
titan_9_mcnair 06/19/2003
sosa is the man.....at batting.....and proably something else too.....i just cant think of anything right now.....oh yeah,he has a lovely smile too
BIGBABY 06/05/2003
Cheater.
the transgressors 06/05/2003
excellent powerhitter, poor defense, mediocre situational hitting and baserunning...way too many k's. No Barry Bonds!---that was pre-corkgate. 5th all-time in strikeouts. Decline at his age is startling. First serious power guy to be caught doctoring bats. Everyone else who was caught was suspended for 7-8 games...same should apply to this loser.
dunkinmvp 03/22/2003
AWESOME!
BassHawg 03/03/2003
may be the best hitter in the game
jgswors 02/26/2003
sammy!!!
Zach Sowers 11/30/2002
People are only rating Sammy Sosa so low cuz he is on the almost worst team in baseball
dominicanangel 08 09/04/2002
Sammmy Sosa rocks!!!!!! And he is also Dominican..cant forget that.. anyways .. to all the people thst dont like him.. why dont u like him?.. I understand its your opinion, but he is such a good player..well anyways Sammy Kicks Ass!
tworebel 06/27/2002
He's one of the best players I've ever seen. He has a high batting average, HR total, and RBI total. He's my pick for MVP.
jibman33 07/04/2001
A class act. Even though he is a superstar, Sammy is still humble. When he and Mark McGwire were racing for the home run record in 1998, he could have said that he was a lot better than Mark, but was one of his biggest supporters, saying that "Mark is the man." He has also given lots of money to his hometown in the Dominican Republic, and has taken the time to teach kids in his country how to play baseball during the offseason. In an age when players are consumed by greed, there should be more players like Sammy.
Kendra2199 06/26/2001
I LOVE Sammy Sosa he is my fave player and i think sammy is the best player out there!
stifler 05/25/2001
Sammy would rather hit 70 home-runs then have his team win the world series. Not near as good as the modern day power hitter that hit for an average and don't strike out much.
sox4life 02/14/2001
SAMMY IS A GREAT POWER HITTER BUT HE WILL SWING AT ANYTHING THAT IS THROWN TO HIM. NO DISCIPLINE AT THE PLATE. HE WILL NEVER CARRY THE POOR CUBBIES TO THE PLAYOFFS BY HIMSELF. HE IS THE ULTIMATE ONE DIMENSIONAL PLAYER
chipperrulz 01/31/2001
hey i think sammy sosa is the best homerun hitter of all times and that he will led the cubs ro the world seried this year.
michaelgil 12/17/2000
Overrated. Hits the long ball but strikes out too much, also his D is spotty.
braves_chick 11/10/2000
He's an ok player but McGwire definately deserves to be higher than Sosa.
bizdude 08/27/2000
Doesn't get the recognition Griffey does, but offensive numbers have been considerably better for three years now, and will continue to be because Griffey can't hit big league (NL) pitching.
Munson 06/11/2000
I'm getting sick of Sammy. Stop crying about how you are owed respect and that the manager shouldn't question your all-around abilities because you are a superstar. How about you keep your mouth shut, play hard, and continue to try to make yourself a better player.
Ruby 03/04/2000
Sammy's the most entertaining figure in sports today.
gt024440du 03/01/2000
Keep on hitting those GRs.
mebb1738om 12/18/1999
Sammy is great!!!
magellan 12/05/1999
You gotta love Sammy. He has handled his skyrocketing fame with grace, generosity, and a seemingly humble appreciation for the opportunities which he has had. Not many athletes can say the same.
TKE21584OM 11/24/1999
Sosa is the best power hitter in MLB, he is a pure natural hitter. Sosa will break the homerun Record in the next couple of years.
danl441du 10/26/1999
Sosa rules!
