One of my ex-wives broke a lot of my light fixtures when she left and I haven't had time to fix them. I don't have any trouble in this area as I am always glad to help out.

I am for doing this not because it is an easy way to go green, but because I have the same problem with giving my money away to the electric company as I do with giving it to the government. My money is better off in my pocket- it gets spent more wisely and it feels more comfortable, as if it is among friends.

Totally agree that this is something that is easy to do - most doors have a lightswitch next to them so it's dead easy to just flip the switch as you leave the room. It really annoys me when people don't do this. There are of course some arguments that if you have one of those fluorescent tube lights it's actually better to leave it on when you leave the room if you're not going to be away for more than a few minutes as more electricity is used by the "starter".The same goes for appliances - why leave something on after you've done with it? It'll only harm the environment and make your electricity bill higher.

Have you ever heard the term "power vampires"? Power adapters that are used for your laptop, Ipod speakers, cell phone charger, computer speakers etc. take 120 volts AC coming out of the wall outlet and convert it to 12 volt DC. The vampire part is that you don’t even need to have your phone, speakers or laptop plugged in for these power adapters to suck power. They are chugging away converting whether something is plugged into them or not. If you have one plugged in, touch it. It's a little warm ain't it? 'Cuz it's working.Next take a look at the number of devices in the house that are plugged in and have lights on them. Kitchen appliances with running timers, LED clocks, backlit control panels, little red dots that turn green when the appliance is turned on, there goes some more power that you ain't really using for anything at the moment. DVD players, VCRs, Cable/Satellite receivers......Don't even get me started on the fact that teenagers only know how to turn lights "on" but have seemingly never mastered the "off" position.

Easy to do and just as easy to forget.

Easy to do, unfortunately, I have several terrariums whose lights must stay on 24/7. But other than that, it is easy to do, practical and it saves some green.

one of the easier things to do. saves on the electric bill too.

I try to shut off any lights in the house that I'm not using at the time. It's a really good way to conserve, not to mention that the utility bill stays at a reasonable rate.

Turning off the light or shutting off the TV when you walk out of the room is pretty easy, but it's also easy to forget every once in a while. I also have a tendency to leave my computer on for long periods of time when I should probably just shut it down.

Simple, easy and cost-effective. We are all guilty of neglecting this at times, but I know many people who seem almost incapable of flipping a switch or pressing a button to shut off the tube. A fairly instructive example of how environmental consciousness can help rather than hurt one's pocketbook.

This is really simple, but I'll admit that I'm not always great at it. My wife complains a lot that I forget to turn off the TV when I leave a room. I'm usually pretty good with light switches though.

I do this. She doesn't. (But she recycles all the time. . .arrgh, consistency? Anyone?) Senior CS pays the light bill ergo yours truly is the lightswitch Nazi.
