Update:Looking at his career, this is a pretty average player when you take the whole package into consideration. And is it just me, or does anyone else look at this guy and think "juice monkey"Original review (2004)He's a fine player with a ton of potential but let's slow down a touch before we put him in Cooperstown. The best CF ever to play the game... Ever hear of Mantle, Mays, and a few others?

Before 2008 he had been a fairly consistant power hitter, known to knock in at least 30+ HR and 90-100 RBIs every yr. He went in to a misterious funk in 08 after he was traded to the Dodgers, and hit only 3 HR in over 230 at bats. He has bounced back of late here in 2009 since he joined the Texas Rangers, and currently has 14 HRs which puts him back at his usual pace of 30+ HR. He is still young enough (32) to hit 500+ HRs, and continue to quietly put up Hall of Fame numbers.

12-5-0740 homeruns + Gold gloves = 5 star.2-9-093 homeruns + 14 RBI's in 75 games = 1 starWhat happened?

He's pretty good,
matth 12/27/2007
He is a very good outfielder, but he would be alot better player if he could hit above 280.
doobiesNhof 05/30/2006
May be the best center fielder ever. Now his bat is starting to prove he belongs with any player in the game today.

The most overrated defender in the history of MLB. It's a tie with Jim Edmonds. Both of these hosers dive when they don't have to and drop a lot of balls from a too casual approach. NO range for either. Very low batting average every year.
dpostoskie 07/27/2005
AJ is having the year he has always been capable of. If teams continue to pitch to him he'll have is first 40 HR year, maybe even 50. He leads the team in BB instead of Ks like he always has.

The greatest glove of all time but a little cocky at times
kingguiness 06/07/2005
As a hitter he is overrated but he is great in the field.

I agree with bluetarbaby. I think it's obvious. As far as centerfielders go, there is truly no discussion. Andruw saves 2 runs a game and is the sole reason for Atlantas low era. Edmunds is good, but when he makes a web gem, Druw would have caught it effortlessly. If Druw reacted to the ball like Edmunds, he would have 5 web gems a night! Hell, Andruw is chasing it down before the batter even swings... ..........LITERALLY! Watch sometime!

Good, solid player.
bluetarbaby 08/14/2004
Doesn't get as many web gems as Edmunds, because balls that Edmunds has to dive for, Andruw makes standing up. Plus , a far better arm than Edmunds. Don't kid yourselves people , Jones is not only the current best , but the best of all - time
Aneudy25 06/28/2004
Descent hitter, doesn't have good selection at the plate, never hits for average. On the other hand the best defensive CF in the game. Not hall of fame status, but fair.

ANDRUW JONES IS THE BEST CF EVER TO PLAY THE GAME. I LOVE WATCHING HIM PLAY, AND I HOPE HE CAN STAY A BRAVE FOR HIS WHOLE CAREER. HE IS AWESOME. IF ONLY HE COULD CUT DOWN ON THE STRIKEOUTS..........

I grew up watching Willie Mays in SF, and I grudgingly have to say this guy is as close as it gets to Willie!!
the transgressors 04/05/2003
amazing defense(marred by occasional laziness). Potential doesn't earn points...he must cut the K's down. He used to be a threat to steal...not so much anymore.

way, way, way, way over-rated Couldn't carry Andy VanSlyke's jock in the outfield when the ex-Bucco was in his heyday. For every great, unreal play Jones makes, (and granted he does make them), I also see him misplaying balls and doing other bad things. This guy is a media creation.
mookyj 06/08/2002
Jones is great and will be even greater than griffey.
koolsax 03/09/2001
He will be one of the greatest outfielders ever...has as much talent as anybody...incredable defense. When you watch him play you know you are watching a star and future Hall of Famer.
Hoochie 12/29/2000
I think Andruw is da' man! He is the bomb at CF. The Braves have the best center-feilder in the NL. But hey, the Braves only have the best anyways! GO AJ!
braves_chick 11/10/2000
This guy knows how to play CF. Not only is he exceptional there,he's also a powerfull hitter. And being at such a young age with all his accomplishments already,he's going to grow into a legendary player.
upchuck 08/07/2000
This is the type of player that a franchise is built around...he is a complete player, plus he is young and good looking (but , the tobacco has to go)...he will be an allstar for many years to come and will always be on a contending team...
magellan 08/07/2000
I love watching this guy play the outfield. His great speed, anticipation, and "closing ability" (that gift of being able to cover an impossible amount of ground at the last minute) allow him to play a very shallow centerfield. He plays defense with talent, skill, and exhuberance - in my opinion, with the possible exception of Bobby Abreu, there is no better defensive outfielder in the NL.
Munson 08/04/2000
The thing that strikes me most about Jones is that he is only 23. Since he has been in the league for so long, it is amazing that he is still that young. He is truly a special defensive player. His jump on the ball is the best around and he gets to just about everything in CF for the Braves. This year, he has also blossomed into a very productive hitter and got a well deserved start in the All-star Game. It's only a matter of time until he is considered among the best in the game and a perrenial MVP candidate.
