Wow, it's really time I update my ratings on this list. A lot has happened since I last visited this list.
While the Mavericks are still my favorite team, I have to drop them a star. They're no longer a contender, although with Dirk and Josh Howard, they still have what it takes to beat any given team on the right night. I just don't think they could beat the Hornets, Lakers, or Celtics in a seven game series, and I think it would be a tossup at this point against the Jazz or the Cavs. I think they'll still make the playoffs this year, but the days where they will compete for the best record in the NBA are behind them. I see them as probably the 7 or 8 seed.

They aren't the team they were last year. With Nash and Walker gone, all they have if Dirk. Nash is gonna help Phoenix to the finals!!!!
Jar-Jar Binks 03/03/2005
A fun team to watch, but their main flaws are defense and rebounding. Losing Walker and Nash hasn't hurt them thus far, but once the playoffs begin they won't beat San Antonio, Phoenix or Seattle. I just don't see it.

Hey Nelson, I hear MJ is available, maybe he an be your sixth man? No, maybe James Worthy or Rasheed could do it? Or, you could draft Rashad McCants, or Ray Felton, or Sean May and one of them could ride your bench. Maybe you could hire Roy Williams to hand out towels or water? Nelson is an idiot. And so is Cuban for not firing him. He STILL doesn't understand you can't win without 'D' after like 40 years. He played Antoine Walker ahead of Jamison! - think about that! Now, Finley was out, Stack was impressive every night, Finley's back - end of the bench Stack goes behind unproven 2nd year players! Dallas will never win it all with Nelson coaching. Look at there talent! They should've won it every year for like 5 years now!
maersk 10/16/2004
a bunch of suckbags who couldent get past the first round of the playoffs if their lives depended on it.
OneHungryMonst er 08/25/2004
A good team.
alphonso 06/28/2004
They may be exciting but they aren't going to win unless they get Shaq. Antoine Walker, Jerry Stackhouse, Christian Laettner .................. hahahahahahahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Dennis Rodman 04/16/2004
mavs r a great team with lots of talented players. they got a great coach and excellent bench players too.Mavs have gone from one of da worst to one of da best!!!
conhusk 04/06/2004
sign a good defensive player, then MAVS can hope for championship. currently, with a lot of good players reminds me of the pippen era at blazers; not necessarily having a good chemistry (getting rid of VAN EXEL is big mistake)
truthdetector 04/02/2004
nice honest answer from chris. He gives Dallas a 1. I wonder what he gives the Hawks? Can we say discredited.
chrisk1177 03/09/2004
No D.
1JohnDoeFan 01/14/2004
Dirk Nowitski is going to go down as being the best white basketball player of all time!!! Oh yeah the Mavs. They are going to be the best team in the league, whenever they can fire Don Nelson and bring in a coach that know's what DEFENSE is.
yoshislink 12/29/2003
High on offense low on D.
DrFeelgood03 10/21/2003
Oh yeah! Dallas Mavericks are the best team in the NBA, no doubt about it. How can anyone not like them? They are a great team and don't complain very often. I hope they win soooo bad. Dirk is the greatest player of all time. Now they have Jamison and Walker??? UNSTOPPABLE!!! Lakers are DONE
waltonesque 08/27/2003
Who needs defense when you have this much offense? Certainly not a championship caliber strategy. The aquisition of Jamison will have a good impact, but there is only so much offense to go around. If I were Cuban I'd sell my soul to get a Ben Wallace type player... or maybe you could slip Bradley some steroids... worked for Shaq.
GLLover27 08/17/2003
No matter what they do I will always root for them!!!!
CollisonGal4 06/02/2003
No one gives them the defense ups that they deserve. So they aren't the best at defense they sure as heck aren't as bad as everyne says they are. But please, Mark, trade Shawn Bradley!!! He's a waste of your money!!! By the way, if defese wins games how come the Pistons got swept?
B_Dawg 05/30/2003
I want The Mavs to win because the other team is going to win at the Final's....
Prof.Chaos 04/26/2003
Very good team. They have a very good chance of winning it all. Need to step it up on defence, though.
talliwacker 04/22/2003
these guys are terrible. i found more talent in canada. now those boys can play hockey.
magellan 04/22/2003
I don't think the Mavs have what it takes to get to the finals. They have no inside presence to speak of - their offense is a pick and roll with Nowitzki and Nash 30 feet from the basket, with someone ending up with an open jump shot. This offense works in the regular season, but come play off time, it's defense and rebounding that wins games, and the Mavs just don't bring that to the table.
BassHawg 04/21/2003
Until they figure out that defense is just as important as offense, they will never win a title.
ViktoriaHinric hfan 04/20/2003
What more can I say then....they are good!
TheMyth 04/13/2003
IF.....the Mavs can play some defense and Shawn Bradley quits playing like a pud and steps it up so players under 7 feet can't dunk on him....and they can play 4 solid quarters against teams like the Kings, Spurs, and Lakers, then they will win the Championship. I love the Mavs, but the Kings are number 2 in my heart. The Kings win the Title this year. Thanks for a great year Don; make your team prove me wrong. And thanks to all the Band Wagon and Fair Weather fans for rating the Mavs top in the NBA section.
Redbird294 02/17/2003
No doubt they're talented, but they CANNOT PLAY DEFENSE WHATSOEVER. In the playoffs, you just can't outscore people like you can in the regular season. If they can learn how to play defense....just A LITTLE defense...maybe they'll be serious title contenders.
lukskywlkr. 12/11/2002
They haven't really faced a lot of teams that are playoff bound, but a win is a win I guess. Should get homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs if they keep up their current run, and that could spell an NBA finals appearance. Do they really believe they can win the whole thing? That is the main question.
HomeMonkey 12/03/2002
One of the best teams in the NBA. The Lakers are my faviorte team, but if I had to chose a team that's not the Lakers my first pick would be Dallas. They have three All-Stars in Nash, Nowitzki, and Finley. They have a great supporting cast in Van Exel, Najera, LaFrentz, and Johnson. They have a great team. Everyone talks about how deep the Kings are, but the Mavs are much deeper.
kbob 11/04/2002
Great team, we just need to step up the D!
AndyInAmerica 03/18/2002
