I hated Johnson at the time. After all he was the rat bastard who was president when I got drafted during the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War.
Looking back on him, for all his faults, and he had a bunch, he is somewhat to be pitied. He inherited a bad situation put forward by a bunch of rich Ivy League mopes and being a product of a Texas teacher college and from a family as poor as church mice, he went along and got stuck into a bog.

Took his share of the blame for Vietnam, and almost all of Kennedy's, to boot. As a congressman and senator, he was one of the most masterful players of the game in Washington, but the skills did not translate into his presidency. That plus an over-dependency on the left-over "best and the brightest" of the Kenndy era, who were full of a deplorable hubris, led to a lot of mistakes. That being said, his domestic policies, unlike his foreign ones, were pretty solid, and far superior to the over-rated Kennedy's.

From what I hear, he was a bad president, but I didn't live through the 60s so I don't know
