I'm too young to know her prior to the Golden Girls, but I loved the show and it was my mother's favorite at the time. I do clearly remember her role in the show and the others as well, and I remember liking every single one of them. It's at least good to know that she lived well into her 80s and enjoyed a good acting career througout her life.

Won't miss her too much. After all, I can still terrify oscar with the mental image of her in a teddy and heels.

The Last of the Sirens, or was that Betty White?

From Maude to Dorthy, she was hilarious in anything I ever saw her in. Had it not been for Bea's priceless zingers, The Golden Girls would have dwindled down to nothing but an aging sleaze, a dingbat and an old bag with attitude. Tall, imposing, over-the-top gestures and that unforgettable booming contralto voice she brought laughter to many for decades - and I can well imagine that her great success in doing so was the answer to the prayers of many a drag queen looking for material.

I start to feel my age because those that i watched as a kid are starting to go one by one. I liked her in maude and I loved her in the golden girls. She played Dorothy very convincing.

Bea Arthur seemed like a very nice genuine lady. I only know her from 'The Golden Girls,' which I've avoided since being made to watch it w/my family years ago. But anyway, I know the golden girls liked cheesecake.

she was a good actress. famous for the dead pan look, and then that "pregnant pause" she was so good at before one of her characters said their lines. she usually played the person who did not take any crap from anyone. Sad to hear she died today. she was in her mid eighties so not a shock. she was good in Maude and i especially liked her in the Golden Girls. just saw her in a clip on you tube singing Bossom buddies with Angela Landsbury. RIP Bea Arthur.

Sorry to hear of it. I can't say she was my favorite actresss, or that I followed her career (I couldn't watch more than 20 or 30 seconds of "The Golden Girls"), but when I watched "Maude" as a kid, it always made me laugh (haven't seen it in approximately 30 years, so I don't know that my good memories of it are really a good gauge of its actual quality or merits), and I thought she wasn't without a certain comedic flair. She sorta stands out for me in a personal way in that my father was friendly with her ex-husband in Hackensack (he was Gene Saks, a noted director). Sadly, it wasn't a friendship that my father maintained beyond high school (although I'm not sure how much of a kick it would have been to have gone over to the Saks-Arthur house once in awhile for a dinner or party; I always found it more exciting that we were distantly related to one of my all time favorite old-time character actors, J. Carrol Naish). Anyway, R.I.P., Bea.

Why do the good ones always die so young? Nevermind...Bea Arthur was playing an old lady on Golden Girls twenty five years ago, so its not like she didn't enjoy old age for a while. In the last few years it was pretty hilarious to see her as the butt of jokes on Comedy Central's Roast of Pamela Anderson. I give her respect for keeping a good sense of humor into old age. I don't know a whole lot about acting, but she had a career that spanned half a century, so she must have been great. Most actresses struggle to find parts as they age, but apparently that wasn't a problem for Arthur.
