Maybe its unfair to pass judgement on something I saw exactly once, but it looked like basic formulaic shite to me.Besides, it had that worthless, untalented, godawful hack John Ritter in it. Just how bad an actor was John Ritter? Let me put it this way. I've seen Vegas blackjack dealers act more sympathetic when they clean you out than this buffoon could ever act.

Yea they picked attractive teens to bolster the show but the depth and writting of the show was not up to par. I loved John Ritter's work on 3's Company but this show was no where near that funny.
Rjohnson71 09/05/2009
I think it was a good idea when they decided not to replace the character of Paul Hennesey like they did on Bewitched. Ritter's death hurt 8 Simple Rules very badly. It managed to last a couple of years after Ritter died. Let me be honest. Without Ritter, this show stunk. They hired James Garner and David Spade to star in this show after Ritter died. But even with those two great actors, this show just wasn't the same. I give this sitcom a 2 star rating.

With all due respect to the late John Ritter, who was very good and funny.
annabel456 05/02/2006
i think the show was better when john ritter was alive but david spade keeps the show alive !!! totally love kaley and amy though!!! :D
frosty_goddess 02/20/2006
Love the show so much! My absolute favorite!
JayNavy 02/07/2006
Sadly, the show's death blow was when John Ritter died. As good as David Spade and James Garner are, they could not deliver the show.
wpb1310 12/28/2005
The only reason to watch this show because you wanted to see Jack Tripperhave children. Now that Jack has passed the show should have stopped. The death of John turned this comedy into a bad Drama. Its like Van Halen turned Dolly Parton.
tvmad 08/25/2005
totally love this show, i do think it was better before paul died but its still good when tj and granpap are in it. totally hilarous
martinema 04/25/2005
This show was good until Jon Ritter died.
mtbmlb 04/11/2005
Should've quit after John Ritter died.

AWESOME! SIMPLY THE BEST! LOVE DAVID SPADE!!!!!!!!!!!
8simplerules 04/02/2005
This show is awesome, its a shame that John Ritter died but the show is being kept alive and kicking with the talents of Katey Sagal,Amy Davidson,Kaley Cuoco,Martin Spanjers and the writers and now with James Garner and David Spade joining in the show is still as awesome and funny
emj5687 03/13/2005
its not hilarious, but its funny in a cute way. I dont watch it religously, but when i do im not dissapointed.
dmsdbo 02/22/2005
John Ritter's passing should have been the end of this show.
Mooselover 02/21/2005
John Ritter made this show watchable and fun. Then when he(shockingly) past away the shows haven't been very funny. The only amusing part is David Spane and even he dosn't make me rush home and watch this.
hpluba 02/12/2005
People, this show isn't so bad. So, John Ritter died. (Unfortunatly, the show focused mainly on him.) But think of what it still has. Katey Sagal plays a good mom, and I love her acting. The girls still play good teenagers, and CJ was a good addition to the show. Not my all time favorite show, but enjoyable nevertheless.
donkeykong007 02/04/2005
Really rubbish! Typical American teenage sitcom...Maybe its me but I find American sitcom (this being a case example)humour to be repetitve, boring, and above all unimaginative... Though you would like it if your 13...
brayden 12/01/2004
i cant believe the dad died its so sad how people are dieing every second of the day =(
opinion585 11/06/2004
i like it despite the fact that john ritter died, its not the show's fault though, give them a break, they are still really funny. But what's the deal with the grandparents? they were having sex on thanksgiving, and then they started hating eachother again, i think that both of the grandparents should live with the family, not just the grandpa, who is now, my favorite charecter!
snlgirl 09/02/2004
Not as funny now that John Ritter's gone. He was so awesome! it was wierd how he died the same day as Johnny Cash.
minmamamia 07/12/2004
Awesome show! But what is going on with Bridget's wardrobe?? She is beginning to resemble a cracksmoking prostitute....
ClassicTVFan47 06/26/2004
What happened to TGIF? It used to be a breeding ground of high-concept family sitcoms like Family Matters (genius kid who can clone himself, etc.) and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. Now, its just the typical family-sitcom fodder. Lacking the charming parental dialogue of the classic Leave it to Beaver, this show is just another one not to watch. So typical as to boggle the mind, the show tanked even further with the departure of John Ritter's character. They had a main character die--on what is supposed to be a COMEDY! Now, an off-screen death (ala Chuckles the Clown) can be good for laughs because we aren't emotionally invested in the characters. But, this was just another excuse to bring angst and boring reality into yet another sitcom. Uninspired to a fault, this show goes to show that a creative touch in today's sitcoms is DESPERATELY needed.
freebird_0128 05/10/2004
As horrible as it sounds, this show has vastly improved since John Ritter's death. Before it was largely insipid and relied on the same old family sitcom gags and jokes, now with the addition of James Garner and David Spade, it has new life. While the eldest girl Bridget irritates me, everyone else has settled into a fun and unique comedy. Not fantastic but now its at least enjoyable.
Dawnsdinos 05/03/2004
I basically started watching it this season to see how they would handle losing John Ritter, they have done an excellent job, I like this show.

i'm a preteen and i love this show! it's too bad that John passed on...*sniff*
CherrySoda99 01/17/2004
I really like this show. It's sad that John Ritter passed on because he was a huge asset to the show. His character added a lot to it.
Daria67 01/01/2004
at last the humor has returned! lets hope the new year brings more laughter.
Todd Parker 12/17/2003
OH...MY....GOD!!! This show is so lame! Insipid, boring, and just plain stupid. I pity the people who actually think this show is worth watching. To these people--please re-evaluate your life and find something better to do with your free time. John Ritter deserved better--RIP.
drummingauggie 12/05/2003
It was OK...
Dassr56 11/09/2003
We love this show. We are sorry about John Ritter though. Please keep the show going in his honor.
ynotkat 11/04/2003
This definitely must see TV. Now that John Ritter is gone the storyline will reflect the sadness, but it is the fact that they are bringing the venerable actor James Garner in that will keep all of us watching. A great cast and excellent acting by all.
samanddiane4ev a 11/01/2003
Whats not to like about this show? Besides John Ritter dying I mean. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. I love this show!
jcspice1 09/23/2003
John Ritter will be missed!
Spaz 08/23/2003
John Ritter is extremely annoying and i dont think he can really act...I can't stand him so thats why i dont like the show
Master Mac 08/03/2003
I think 8 simple rules is awesome, all the characters play great parts, gud to see john ritter back on series tv obviously, amy davidson who plays kerry is really nice looking but I couldn't believe that shes nearly 24
MariaCVasquez 06/17/2003
One of the better silly comedies with familiar faces. Comedy doesn't require complex plots, so I enjoy it as a nice, mindless, good laughter TV time. Although most of the time my TV is on NBC, this is one of the times I tune elsewhere. Good for ABC.
BorntoRock 06/05/2003
Makes me long for the inane antics of Jack Tripper. Family fare aimed at not distracting too much from the toilet paper ads.
DrFeelgood03 05/29/2003
Funny and that girl is so hot.
lotr417 05/28/2003
Good show - Bridgette is irritating - still very funny.
Bridget98801 05/21/2003
it is the best show ever, and kyle is soooo cute.
amblin 05/20/2003
Lot's of fun.
sw33tvixen 04/19/2003
If i need a luagh, this is the perfect show to watch! Always a joke here and there to make people wanna laugh. It's one of my favourite shows!
JDavid2504 04/10/2003
Having two teenage daughters our family finds this show very funny and real. The redhead,Kerry is quite good and the cast overall appears to "click" together. John Ritter is great as always.
mst3k4evr 04/01/2003
Like with "Less Than Perfect", I had never seen an episode of this show, just the (endless) previews. And like with "Less Than Perfect", those previews were enough to turn me off to the show. The daughters are two of the nastiest little b**ches I have EVER seen on TV, especially the blonde. And they call this a "family" show?
BunnyLove93 03/28/2003
I love this show. Now I can see how I acted when I was 15 years old. This a show that an entire family can enjoy and relate to. ABC has finally made it's comeback. Great job.
